A look at performance for the 2011 GT500?

Hey Guys,

I may be putting this in the wrong forum so please beat me gently if I'm wrong, but I thought the crowd here would like to see this.

It's motortrends info on the SMS Saleen Mustang to be released late 2009. However, the key sentence is this....

The SMS 460X will feature the 5.0-liter V-8 and expected to output a massive 655 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The 460X will reportedly boogie to 60 mph in about four seconds flat. Both engines will be fitted with Saleen's latest SMS 296 Supercharger unit, while the 460X will also come with Saleen's Red Butterfly Induction System. Transmissions include five-speed auto or manual for the 460, with a six-speed SMS-massaged manual as the gear changer for the 460X.

I wonder if this is a peak at what is to come for the 2011 GT500. Why continue to use the 5.4 V8 block if the 5.0 block can be supercharged to blow the output of the supercharged 5.4 out of the water?

That car uses the built Saleen motors from the S302 series. They aren't the same motor that's going into the 2011 car.

Exactly.

So that's not the 2011 GT 5.0? I know it's not the proposed aluminum 5.4 GT500 2011 motor if that is what you're referring too. Sorry, apparently, just a bit confused on my side.

I didn't realize the relatively new SMS Limited had a stockpile of built Saleen S302 engines laying around? :headscratch:

It's not a "stockpile". However, it's pretty much the same motor Saleen is using. Not the new 5.0L motor that will be in the 2011.

Since we are on the topic of the 2011 GT500, I found a slide that Ford recently presented to the press on future ford engines, the one engine that's missing is the 5.0 during the presentation, the question was asked about the 5.0, the Ford speaker said the news about that engine will be released later, the one thing that caught everyone's attention is the 6.2L V8, it is completely different from what Ford engineers have designed before, once again Ford is very hush hush on the 6.2L, but my source that got me the slide from the press conference confirmed that indeed Roush is building a 5.0L for Ford as we speak. There's a rumor on the SVT forum that the 6.2L will be in the 2011 GT500, it was developed and planned a year ago to compete against the Camaro SS (which died), it will be an aluminum block instead of iron and it will save over 100lbs, which will put the GT500 50/50 weight ratio to be almost dead on. Anyone else know what new colors will be available for the 2011 GT500??

Oh well, if we can't have the biggest, at least we can say we have the last model year with the 5.4L engine. :violin:

Yeah my understanding was an all aluminium block good for 1100+ hp before grenading. I have talked to others who heard the same but, its the usual believe it when you see it. For the 2011 GT 500 I mean.

I've seen more that the 6.2L producing about 400HP is going to be for the 2010 Mustang GT, the same engine that is going into the 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor. Ford isn't being hush about the 6.2L at all, its right on the Raptor's homepage and says it will be available in early 2010.

Ford could supercharge that but it would be a waste, they are already the horsepower king so they won't waste money to eclipse themselves.

they will go down not up with environmental stiffer regulations and greenies in the oval office, will be lucky if we keep our 5.4, think of turbo v6 .

What are the specs on that engine?

You can see the specs for the new engine in the 2010 Taurus.

3.5L V6 Twin Turbocharged

Direct Injection

365 HP

350 Lb-ft

91 Octane Recommended

paired with its 6 Speed transmission its gets 17/25 MPG.

For comparison,

The current Mustang GT

4.6L V8

Port Injection

315 HP

325 Lb-Ft

Regular Unleaded

With a 5 speed,

16/24 MPG for Auto

17/23 MPG for Manual

Filling up with regular unlead in the GT offsets the EcoBoost's higher MPG value.

With the Mustang GT V8's MPG numbers being so close to the EcoBoost V6's and the fact that it is a performance vehicle i doubt it will be losing the V8 anytime soon. With new technology like direct injection and a 6 speed the MPG numbers for a new 5.0L engine could help it keep up with turbocharged V6's.

The Mustang GT is the last place ford would put a Turbo V6, i don't doubt the EcoBoost engine will make its way into the Mustang lineup eventually.

So you are saying that we will see the v6 turbo in mustangs for 2011?

A fully optioned 460X is almost $100K.

I think Ford learn a lesson in Mustang price elasticity with the KR.

I'll take a GT500 at $45K-50K all day long.
