Warranty work and Rental Cars

Recommended Posts

Just curious about something. If you car, still under waranty, goes to the dealership and they end up performing work under warranty (TSB in this case) does the dealership or Fomco have to pay for your rental or is it up to the dealership.

The reason I ask is because the rental car agency is trying to charge me $140 for a day and half. Long story short it should have cost me about $100.

But it got me thinking that actaully I thought one will just get reimburssed for the charge anyway for warranty work. My car is driveable, if that makes a difference.

Just curious as I think paying $140 out of my pocket for a rental to just get me to work for the day when I left my car off is ridiculous. The rental agency is owned independly from the dealership. I am just curious how it works in most cases before I go any further with this.

I already spoke to the manager at the rental agency and got no where.

Thanks

Subscribing I like to know too..

I always heard that if they keep your car overnight to perform a warranty work. The rental car is covered. I usually drop off my car in the morning and if it is not done before closing time. I rush over and get the rental car. I use to like the SVT plan.. no matter what you got a rental car just for bringing in your car...

my buddy works at a toyota dealership and he said that it is very common they will loan a free rental car for the day even if its not warranty work, like for just a dam oil change and the customer just needs to get to work.

But this is Toyota, not Ford, this is one reason why people do not buy American!

But we will see, but I still would like to know the answer because perhaps the dealership or Ford HAS to cover the rental

I have Lexus and Acura cars and they give me loaners everytime I take a car in for anything. I take a $55K Ford in and I have to have co-workers pick my ass up and take it back to pick the thing up. This is why I buy Acura and Lexus. Ford only because Lexus and Acura don't make anything fun to own..... They are very relaible appliances....

Nothing like having a co-worker pick you up at a dealer in the AM, sit all day and at 4:30PM get a call that they just got the tech to take a ride and they "couldn't duplicate" the complaint. Take the co-worker back to pick the thing up. Then call to schedule a return when multiple people can have a "meeting" on the problem. Then they hear it, say you can leave it, now to get another ride from somebody.

Until they get this basic little problem of no loaner cars fixed, I won't buy one as a daily driver....

It is the first thing I'll ask before I buy the next car. Do I get a loaner when I come in for service.

The Lexus dealer put me in a brand new RX450 Hybrid so I could "check it out", and the Acura dealer in a new TL, so I could "check it out".

The Ford dealer told me a rental car agency is about 5 blocks down the road and they have compacts for about $50 a day...

This is a Ford Dealership, not a toy, chevy, lexus, etc so none of them apply here and really it's up too the dealership. They should supply you with a loaner, if the car is going to be held overnight for repair work, but even that is getting slim lately. But the car rental company as you stated is not affiliated with the dealership, so therfore they are charging you the rates.

So, it is not in our warranty that we get a free loaner car if our car is kept overnight for warranty work?

I find that hard to believe

I could see it being up to the dealer if it is just there for some mods or something but even then, not good business.

There is a reason why people do not buy American cars and the American car companys still do not get it!

Think of this, the American auto manufacturers are finally building good quality cars and do not understand why people still continue to buy foreign.

It is because of the service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish someone that works at an american car dealership could come on here and explain this to me or why the auto manufacturers allow this to happen.

Does Acura and Lexus reimburse the dealership for these free loaners or are the dealerships just eating the costs?

Can you imagine buying a Ford GT and needing a buddy to pick you up when you leave your $150,000 car off for work.

I feel like a 16 year old all over again when I am sitting on the curb waiting for a ride. My buddy owns a new BMW and laughed and made fun of me the whole ride, I wanted to shoot myself.

Whether it was for the TSB - 4 days first time and 7 days the second time, or for an oil change or blown speaker or nail in one of my tires - my local dealer has always had a car waiting for me for the day or for the week. Sometimes they come pick up my ride and leave me the keys for the loaner, other times I take mine in and they give me a 'demo'. My other 5 cars/trucks are all Toyota - cause they never break down. :hysterical:

I wrote this awhile back at the mercedez site I visit...

Ok, Guys I took my AMG ML55 back to mercedez to get detuned due to all the dang horsepower it has....::bo: Sorry Gibs but, I think I will give your TBSS a run for its money :) Well to get to the thread in hand I have never driven any other vehicle than a Ford I refused for the life of me to never drive anythingelse.. I bleed Ford blue to the heart.....

Well guys my story goes like this. I really took my truck in to get its basic service done and oil change because not sure what the previous owner did because I have no records.. I arrive at San Diego Mercedez benz and right away you know exactly were to go there is signs and service guys waiting to greet you like if you were some sort of professional football player or famous actor this is by far way different than any Ford Dealership I have been too. Next I am told to drive into the building where there is about 50 large glass windows with people in there offices just watching you drive thru awesome feeling. I finally get to the service advisory window and he quickly comes and askes me sir how can we help you, I tell him about my vehicle and it needs it service and oil change and filter. He says no problem and says please go into the customer lounge and we will be right with you, I said ok I then proceed to the customer lounge were I am greeted by two ladies in bikinis with Starbuck hats on them :) ok not really but, they did have a Starbuck coffee machine with breakfast and all the drinks are complementary wow, real nice atmosphere there is about 4 to 5 big flat screen tv's so it really doesnt matter were you sit every chair in there is awesome. Lucky for me I had my laptop with me and automatically saw a hugh sign that said high speed wireless available so I did'nt miss a minute of this awesome forum I love. Oh I forgot to mention while in the showroom you are greeted with all these awesome looking cars pricing from 150,000 and up:( :) So about 10min pass and then a service advisory comes out and hands me some keys to a 2007 C230 Sport and says we will call you when you vehicle is done. Im beening Ford customer I know I need to stop the advisory and say wait how much for the rental? I felt like she laughed at me and said something under her breath like silly 1st time benz shopper or owner or something to that effect. She smiled and said have a wonderful day we will contact you if anythingelse arises.. I was shocked.. No Charge... No Ford dealer has ever treated me like this.... Well on my way home I decided to see what this C class can do. And I mean I squeezed out every possible hp this car can go. I shifted every gear like I stole it..:):D I am still in shock this car does not have the down to earth torque that our cars have but, let me tell you this 2.5L V-6 201 HP is deadly, I can just imagine the bigger and faster cars.. I hit 130+ and hit the turns at way over 80+ man this little car really hughs the turns, I have to say the suspension is 50 times better than my Cobra.. Remember the The Sport models have firmer suspensions, lower ride height and more powerful brakes than the Luxury models. The Sport sedans also have a thick, three-spoke steering wheel, more thickly bolstered front seats and aluminum trim, and are trimmed with aggressive lower body cladding. All I have to say is I am looking at a way to get out of my Ford Edge and purchase me another Mercedez:)

You coulda been my dealer! He sold it to me. He is the only one who works on it. I bought the MAXIMUM ESP (platinum I think you call it) plan. And his rental cars are his. One of the benefits of a small city Ford dealer.

I just dropped my 07 off to have oil change and tire rotation and I mentioned top issues--they called Ford and wanted the car sent to a top shop. The dealer dropped me off at Enterprise and all I pay is the gas I burn....of course, it's a Focus.....but no charge. Enterprise said the service dept had a standing contract.

Ford did have special programs for SVT products (Rental & Car Wash) when you brought your vehicle into the service department. I'm not sure if this program is still in effect for older SVT products.

I always loan my personal customers one of our used cars and have a porter fill it with fuel.

As several have already posted Ford does not cover a rental car unless you purchase that type of coverage thru the ESP warranty plan. When a dealer does provide a "loaner" which is different from a rental it is the dealership that is absorbing the cost of the loaner vehicle.

For some reason though I want to say that Lincoln does provide a rental/loaner car as part of their standard warranty.

In regards to the import cars. The same thing applies as far as I know. Companies like Toyota and Nissan do not provide a rental car for warranty work but many of the import dealerships do offer a loaner car at no charge. This is one way that helps them get higher customer ratings.

Interesting, thank you!

So if a Ford dealership has a rental car company on the premises, does the dealership use them for a loaner or is this just something they provide strictly through the dealership

I have been to a Ford dealership and got a free loaner

If I was not a retarded die hard Ford guy, there is just no way in hell you could get me to buy a Ford or any American car for that matter.

Service is everything

The company I work for puts entire emphasis on client servicing and it is what has kept our company from doing any global lay offs and helped us maintain our current clients and obtain new ones.

I thank all those that replie, I actually thought it was required to get a free loaner while they keep your car under warranty for warranty work.

What if you did not have multiple car and needed it for work, they just keep charging you each day? Still doesnt really make sense to me, oh well

Chuckstang

Most dealerships that have an onsite car rental booth/office from my experience also have an onsite bodyshop. I believe that is where most of the rental business comes from.

I agree with your comments on service. I'm not that old but I'm old enough to remember when gas stations were called service stations. Now that I think about it even the words gas station have been replaced with mini-mart or convenience store.

I think the Toyota comment is sarcastic, but I have actually owned 2 Lexus and 2 Acura and they each had problems. Not perfect cars... But they always gave me MANUFACTURER paid for loaners, and never called me with a "could not duplicate" after the car sat there all day. Combined mileage on the 4 is over 350,000 miles and I never had to pay for a single out of warranty repair. The last Ford I owned, other than my Mustangs, required over $2000 in repairs before it hit 70K. The dealer made a comment like you and that was the last American car I have owned, other than the Stangs. I am too busy to get worked up over car service, and I can't deal with the crap at the domestic dealers. I leave that to people who just must not give a crap....

I bought the Lexus and Acura's out of town to get a better deal, and have them serviced locally. The local service department treats me the same as the guy who bought one locally. I know some of you dealers have commented that "if you bought the car here, I'll make sure you get a loaner".....not good enough. The other guys still have one up on you....they don't care where you bought it.

Sad but true, unless things like this change, I don't think the American auto industry will be around for the long haul, no matter how much government money we throw at them.

Sadly though, they keep thinking it is the cars and that all they need to do is build a good car, but that is just a very small portion of the sale.

Same logic with the GT500s around sitting at dealers lots looking for huge ADMs, their mentality is score big and don't worry about repeat business

I never meant for this to come to a bashing of American cars haha but hey its true

Chuck, my debit card was charged $150 on June 1st by Enterprise the day I took my rental at Tasca for my clutch TSB repair. Enterprise reimbursed me in full on June 8th after repair and loaner was returned. Service adviser I had took care of charges for rental on Tasca's service dept is what I was told. Is your Shelby completed?

My Ford dealership will provide me with an in-house loaner or a rental from Enterprise, FOC. Their only requirement is that the vehicle being worked on is purchased from them. This offer extends to all work done, including engine mods and regular service maintenance. I've even been provided with a rental for 1/2 a day's work. I like my dealership. :happy feet:

My 08 was leaking antifreeze the day I bought it and put it in my driveway. Brought it to my local dealer(not the one I bought it from) and they rented me a car from Enterprise( An F-150 that my kids thought was cooler than the Shelby). Had that for a few days. Then I had a problem loosing power steering after hard acceleration. They needed to keep it for a day or two and I got a Lincoln Town car. They have an Enterprise desk in the service department. They frown on getting you a rental but if they have already taken things apart on your car and will get the part the next day, it's proabably cheaper to rent you a car than expend labor time to put the car back together and have to redo it all over again. Obviously if the car the problem is diagnosed quickly and you were waiting, they might ask you come back when the part comes in if they didn't have it in stock. My wife wont buy another GM product because everytime she brings in her Park Avenue for service she has to wait around for a half hour or more to get a lift a 1/2mile to work. Not to mention it's Government Motors now. That's another story.

I have two Lexus and there is a catch to that:

"Service Loaner Vehicles: If your vehicle must be kept overnight at a Lexus dealership for a warranty covered condition that requires more than eight hours to repair, Lexus will provide you with a complimentary loaner vehicle. "

http://www.lexus.com/models/RX/service/index.html

In other words if the repair is under 8 hours to complete, even if it has to stay over night because you brought it in the afternoon, you are not entitled to a loaner, however having said that, they always offer one at least so far, and I think actually push it on me to get me out of the waiting room! I've had a guy tell me to take the car and go get something to eat etc. But this is at the sole discretion of the dealer as are things like car washes etc., which I don't use except in the winter when I don't want to do it myself.

That may be official, but I have had the Lexus's in probably a total of 5-6 times, and most wern't over 8 hours or overnight and everytime I got a loaner. I don't know who paid for it, but they gave me one. Two different dealerships.

Same story with my Acura's. Everytime, no questions asked....

The GT500 spent probably about a total of 10 days in the shop last year, and never was I given a loaner. My wife had a Jeep before the Lexus's and they never gave loaners.

The Acura dealer does $30 oil changes and they wash the car, vacuum the car, feed me decent cookies, and free cans of pop. Cable television on a leather couch, ask me if I want to take anything out for a test drive, etc...

The Ford dealer gives me a challange and bad attitude because I need to buy 7 quarts of $9 oil and that means the parts guy got interupted in his conversation with the service tech that has nothing to do....

some of the other brands reimburse for some of the extras

ford does NOT

I hope nobody takes my rant wrong. I love Ford product. I love my GT500. I rant because maybe somebody at Ford will someday understand some of the other reasons people go and buy other products....

The first thing one has to do to fix mistakes is admit to them, and I think they don't recognize some of the customer service issues, etc... significantly enough. They lose customers, for LIFE, for some of the smallest reasons.

Wow Im new here but I couldent help but to chime in on this one. some off you are correct and most off you are wrong. I run a Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealership. Ford Does give the dealers $$$ for rentals durring "warranty repairs" only. Over the past year they use to give it for cash and warranty but now its only if a warranty claim is made. ITs called "TAP" Transporation Assistance Program" and its for customer satisafaction. its up to the dealer to use it when its needed or justified because they dont give much $ but i use my allioaction every quarter on purpose so i can yell at my Ford rep to give me more!! when someone has an ESP yes rental $ can be used there also but if someone owens a GT500 and askes for a rental its a no brainer you give it to them. sorry for the mis spelling i type fast

Like Wickedstangs comment;take our G-500 in and a loaners keys are in our hand practically before we set foot out of the car.All clean ,well lit,yes sir ,what do you need sir,its a service dept, and you get service.

Have a SRT Super Bee that i would rather have my fingernails ripped out than take it in for service.

I would sell it but now that its a Fiat I own it forever.

I have a good relationship with my Ford Dealer, not the same as MB but good solid service.
