Old School vs. New

Recommended Posts

Two doors up from my business is a body shop. Along with all the usual insurance stuff, they do some really cool stuff too like a 48 Ford convertible, a 69 Impala that they reversed the rear doors into suicide doors, new Dodge Charger they painted up in Univ. of KY colors for some kid who got a football scholarship, interesting stuff like that. This past week I drove the GT 500 quite a bit and one afternoon I was heading out and one of the owners was pulling out in a 63 Chevy convertible (no top, just frame, no bumpers, no back seat) taking it up to the tire shop. So, at the first intersection he waved me alongside and grinned real big and gunned the motor. It's about a half mile to the next intersection so we just played all the way there, up and back, up and back, just goofing off. Next intersection we both turn right onto a 4 lane, now, it's on. He pulls out and hammers it, didn't even give me a chance to pull out. I tried to keep it straight and get on it hard and was on his back bumper just after I shifted to 2nd, past him by 3rd, but the '63 was flying. Later that afternoon he came by and told me where he was going and so on. 63's got a tricked out 396 stroked and bored, ported and polished, etc. He said the 63 just explodes with power, but he said my car looked like a train pulling a way. He couldn't believe I just motored on by....looked like I was out for a Sunday drive. I let him take my car around the block. He came back grinning from ear to ear and using several adjectives I can't repeat here. He said big blocks, small block, turbo ricer, he's never been in anything that seemed to have the seemingly effortlessness and huge reserve of power this engine has. Smooth as.....well, I can't repeat that either. And mine is stone stock!

Saturday I waxed it, the paint and wheels were really popping. It's 3 years old, a new model is out and I still get ooooo's and ahhhh's at the gas station, WalMart, McD's, anywhere I go. I've never had a car that attracted as much attention. At any intersection I pull up to (especially with the top down) at least 2 other cars would have to be on fire to draw as much attention as this thing does....I just love it!

I hear ya man. I was hard-core old school until the S197 was released. I sold my '72 Fastback that I owned for 20 years and bought an S197 Mustang GT. Last year I sold that and bought the GT500. I could never go back. The new cars are so much better!! :happy feet:

Yea, I had a 69 Camaro SS w/396 and turbo 400. I had the engine rebuilt w/a hotter cam, new carb and some headers. It was pretty quick ...would easily bark the tires from 1st to 2nd. Damn thing got 9 miles to the gallon...you could actually see the gas guage go down (like the minute hand on a clock) if you punched it and held it for a while. However, that thing could not hold a candle to my stock GT 500...in no way, shape or form. However, maybe if I had slapped a SC on it, it would.

Heh. Found this under my car when I visited the shop today. Fortunately for the camaro, my baby was too polite to take a leak.

It was actually a truly bitchin' camaro. 427 small block, over 700 horses. SS with the RS lights. Very nice.

Two greats waiting to flex their muscle- "Howdy ol timer how are things down there?" " Tell me bout the good ol days"

Alloy Metallic is the fastest color.

I think that is why everybody checks them out. They all know Alloy is a force to be reckoned with.

Amen, brother. :happy feet:

+1,000,000 Just yesterday I was leaving work, and at the 1ST red light the guy next to me asked "is that the Shelby with 500 Horses?" I replied "yes it is" and he gave me a big thumbs up!! :happy feet: Passed a guy on his Harley and could read his lips as he said to his passenger " That's a bad ass car" Man I love driving this beast!!!!
