Shelby Interior Upgrade

Recommended Posts

I would also love to see some more picks, especially of the "Blue-601" interior upgrade and/or get some info on how it compares with the Vista Blue exterior color. Does anyone have picks or first hand knowledge???? I am holding off on my order hoping that someone will post picks of the finished product....

ShelbyStore.com is somewhat limited on the pictures posted of their interior upgrade. I'm curious to see if anyone has more pictures of the colors offered.

So far I think I've seen Red and Tan inserts around the board. :headscratch:

Here's the blue interior. Hope this helps.

I love the look of this upgrade and the price does not seem bad to me. But the only thing that I am not a huge fan of are all to the wrinkles that I have seen in them. Has anyone that has upgraded to this noticed if they work themselves out after some time or is the fit just not as tight as it needs to be? I would love to do this upgrade but the wrinkles in the seats would drive me nuts. The pics that COBRA SCOTTY posted seem to be the best that I have seen.

I CAN TELL YOU THIS ; THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT YOU LOOK FOR IN AN

INTERIOR, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1.) GET THE BEST INTERIOR INSTALLER YOU KNOW TO DO THE JOB.

2.) MAKE SURE THAT THE HIDES THAT YOU RECIEVE HAVE GOOD THICKNESS

TO THEM AND THEY ARE NOT WRINKLED. ESPECIALLY THE LEATHER ON THE UPPER

SIDE BOLSTERS WHICH WOULD BE WHERE THE SIDES OF YOUR SHOULDERS

TOUCH THE SEAT. AS FOR WRINKLING SOME IS NORMAL AND YOUR CAR

SITTING OUTSIDE IN THE HOT SUN FOR A DAY OR 3 SHOULD ALSO

RESOLVE THOSE WRINKLES. WHEN THE FACTORY SEATS ARE MADE THEY ARE PUT

INTO A HEATED ROOM TO HELP GET THE WRINKLES OUT. MY CAR HAS YET TO SIT

OUTSIDE IN THE SUN. SO I STILL HAVE SOME LIGHT WRINKLING ON THE UPPER SILVER

INSERTS.

OTHERWISE THIS INTERIOR IS NOTHING SHORT OF EXACTLY

WHAT THE SHELBY GT'S NEEDED TO BRING THE PACKAGE INLINE WITH

THE OTHER PACKAGES LIKE THE SS AND THE TERLINGUA.

I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS , BUT PLEASE BEWARE OF THE ITEMS

I MENTIONED ABOVE.

As some of you know me, i tell it like it is good or bad. I also have been doing interior upgrade myself on my car. Been learning from a professional. That has 35 years experience. Leather is one of the hardest materials to work with. Its skin from a cow. Nothing is perfect on cow hide. But its like doing a paint job. More time you put in it and better materials you use. The better the paint will look in the end. Good paint jobs will go for anywhere from 2000 to 10K. Well this is a 2K paint job. I believe your getting your moneys worth. If you ask me to do your seats. Id say ok it'll be 5 to 6K. My matials cost 1K and i have 100+ hours of labor in them. I don't believe wrinkles will disappear and it'll probably looks its best when you first put them on. It takes a real craftsman many hours to make leather seat covers to look perfect and requires best materials money can buy.

Oh and just so everyone knows. I don't have any desire to do upholstery for anyone. My son has ask me to do some for money. Every since he looked at my work. but I'm just not interested in doing any upholstery work.

I've seen that too. From what I've read the heat will make them go away over time, but I haven't seen too many people get this done yet.

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on this upgrade kit. Any regrets or comments. I've heard the quality is getting better. Please chime in if your happy or sad.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, I have no regrets. The quality is good, is it like a custom show car product, no. Is it better than what you would see from most O.E.M.'s...yes. The seats come with new foam for the fronts that do hold you in place much better than the original seats.

As far as the wrinkles, mine still has a few after the leather has tightened up, but no more than my Mercedes, Jaguar or any other O.E.M. leather seat interior that I have owned.

I am very satisfied!

Hope this helps.

thanks, I have been communicating with rob and Gary over the past couple weeks. I have my colors picked out. I'm going to purchase extra door panel matl that matches the seat inserts. Not sure if I'm going to have the CS logo put on the headrests. Did you? I don't want the interior to look busy.

Thanks

My seats do have the signature, I don't think it looks to busy. The signature is fairly understated and is done very nicely. Gary was wonderfull to work with and I also purchased extra material for the doors.

Good luck!

Here's some info for you guys. This is in no way to cut down any one's work or car. Its to educate you on what to look for and how seats are made. Also what it takes to do seats right. If you look at my pics. These pics are of my seats while i was making them and my stock covers. You can see where i sewed around each panel twice. Before panels were sewn together. This will make the seams stronger and keeps the material from wrinkling. Most shop don't sew around once much less twice. This is how it should be done. Look at my front cover of a rear seat. Before the back is sewn on. Also its not even on the cushion yet. See how its doesn't have any wrinkles. These are pics of my seats as they were made. Sew foam was glued on to the leather first. Its 1/2 inch thick high quality foam. The backing or Material side of sew foam is facing out. This makes your leather last longer. Because the seat foam rides against sew foam material backing and allows it to slide. Sew foam backing is slick. As you set down the leather moves or slides with your butt. Your seat covers shouldn't have any wrinkles. Some very small wrinkles in leather is normal. Pics of my seats you can see an area around the middle hump. That has small wrinkles and this is normal for leather. But any around seams isn't normal. You can be the judge. I'm trying to help you. So you know whats right and whats not. You want to protect your investment right ? If you guys have any questions I'll be glade to answer them. Tim.................. I don't consider these seats show quality ether. This was my first ever. Far from show quality.

Seats look GREAT, very cool.

Only problem I have is with that Sky Blue color the room is painted :hysterical::hysterical: .

That's funny. We had to paint it over. Like five times. Because it was Jeff Gordon colors a few years back. When my son was a lot younger. He was a big fan of Jeff's. So we painted his room Jeff Gordon theme. It was orange, red, and blue. Al very high gloss colors.

Nice work!!

I've discussed the quality of online seat covers with a few upholstery shops and they say the quality is usually pretty good. Now if I want something of higher quality and custom to my choices it would cost me around $4k. I've spoken to the mfg of these covers and mentioned the wrinkles, etc. They claim they are due to the material being folded during shipping and will fade after sun exposure and shrinkage. The real issue with quality is experience, type of material and craftsmanship. I'm sure for 2k your not getting a 4k job. That's just something you will have to consider when purchasing this kit. There is a 3 year warranty on workmanship.

Some on line shops have computers do the sewing. You cant hardly get any better then that. As far as sewing goes. Materials could use some improvements though. I almost had a shop do some for me. Seen some in person and they looked great. Leather wasn't very good though. That's why i did my own. Because i didn't want to order some and couldn't really find anyone in my area. Not saying that's your case. Because ive never seen them in person. But you should be able to get nice looking seats for 2K. With no out of place wrinkles. If seat covers are folded for very long. Then yes it'll take some time for them to relax. Some shop use steamers. I was told you should never steam leather. its not good on cow hides. The guy i learned from doesn't even own one. I would just give it some time and if your not happy with the look. Then send them back with pics. Make them get it right. Good luck to you guys. If you have something that you believe isn't right. Then get some pics and i can give you MHO if its normal or not. If its not. Then make them fix it. First you should clean your leather with Lexol. You'll be surprised how dirty leather can be. Then put your car out in the sun and see what it looks like after a few days. Your replacing seat covers for looks. So they should and need to look good. Before your going to be happy. If i can help in anyway Y'all just let me know. I would say, buy-em. Its like having a new car. One of the best Mods IMHO

Be careful with the door panels. I've heard they need to beak the insert panel from the Poe piece. Also, the leather is not wrapped around the panel so you see an edge. I would talk to a top notch upholstery shop before having the doors done.

Anyone have this done yet chime in please.

They are very hard to do. I'm not going to give away my secrets. But if done right you don't have to break anything and you don't see any edges. I'll show you the edge if you like. Someone very experience would be able to figure it out. I would think. A crappy job would be very easy to do. I spent many hours on mine. They look show quality. I just had my car at an interior shop and they couldn't believe that i did my own work. Same shop that i was going to have do my car. They told me that sun visors and door panels couldn't be done. I did both. Here's a couple of pics. Sun visors in black Alcantara with blue stitching to match headliner. Hardware i had a body shop paint.
