KR TIRES RESVISITED

Recommended Posts

I apologize for bringing this up again. I now there was a brief discussion about this 4-6 weeks ago. I have an 07' GT500 with the FRPP CAI and 3.73:1 gears. With the stock tires I was able to run as quick as 12.3 in the quarter mile and 12.6 or 12.7 if I messed up coming off the line.

Since I was due for a new set of rear tires, I thought I would try the KR spec tire. I put about 600 miles on them before I went to the drag strip. At the strip I set the pressure at 30 psi and did no burn outs. The car felt like it was on ice. The best 60' time I was able to get was a 2.18 and I had two 2.59's to go with it. This compares to my norm which would be in the 2.05 to 2.15 range.

Can any one give me a tried and true solution as far as tire pressure and burn out or not.

Any help would be much appreciated.

MAY I CHIME IN AN LEND THIS PIECE OF ADVICE. A STREET TIRE WILL

ONLY GET SLICKER OR LOSE TRACTION IF YOU TRY A BURNOUT OR GO THRU

THE WATERBOX ; AVOID THAT. THE STREET TIRE THAT IS NOT A DRAG RADIAL

WORKS BEST BY ADDING 4-6 LBS OF AIR TO THE TIRE ABOVE 32 LBS ; THIS

WILL CAUSE THE CENTER OF THE TIRE TO BULGE EVER SO SLIGHTLY ;

ALLOWING THE TIRES TO GET MORE TRACTION AND HAVE A GREATER

CONTACT PATCH HELPING YOU LAUNCH.

DRAG RADIALS AND SLICKS AS EVERYONE KNOWS GET THE BEST TRACTION

BY LETTING AIR OUT AND LOWERING THE AIR PRESSURE TO 14-16 LBS ON

THE AVERAGE.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi Scotty,

Thanks, for the reply. I have never tried overinflating. I seems like the contact patch would be smaller by virtue of the center section of tire bulging and lifting the edges up off the pavement.

Just curious,

Rob

I KNOW NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS TECHNIQUE. HOWEVER, I GREW UP IN

A NHRA FAMILY AND LEARNED IT THIS WAY. JUST TRY IT AND

REMEMBER THESE ARE NOT DRAG RADIALS AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE

TO LAUNCH AS HARD AS WITH DRAG RADIALS OR SLICKS. YOU WILL NEED TO

LAUNCH AT ABOUT 3,000 TO 4,000 RPM AND USE A TECHNIQUE KNOW AS SLIPPING

THE CLUTCH WILL AID IN BETTER TRACTION AND 60 FT TIMES.

IN CLOSING YOU WILL NEED DRAG RADIALS IF YOU TRUELY WANT GREAT 60 FT

TIMES.

(P.S.)

FYI IF YOUR ARE NOT AWARE SLIPPING THE CLUTCH IS WERE YOU SLOWLY

RELEASE THE CLUTCH OR LET YOUR FOOT COME OFF THE FLOOR WHEN LAUNCHING

YOU CAR FROM THE STAGING/TREE. GOOD LUCK , AND THE TIRE PRESSURE

TECHNIQUE DOES AND WILL WORK BECAUSE YOU ARE OVER INFLATING THE TIRE

AND WITH STOCK TIRES IT PUTS MORE TREAD ON THE TRACK, HELPS IT STAY THERE.
