Black dust on garage Floor

I have a stock April "07 Shelby GT500. The car has not given me any problems and I have been parking it in the same spot in the garage for the past two years. Recently I've noticed what can only be described as a small amount of "black" dust forming on the garage floor underneath the engine. This is slightly behind the front wheels. I'm thinking it may be related to the clutch. I have not faced any of the clutch problems mentioned by other owners. The dust is similar to "graphite" or the "brake dust" we get from the front brakes, but why would it be building up underneath my engine/transmission is a mystery. Condensation?

Anyone with a similar problem or clues to what it might be? The car continues to run great.

Thanks

Could be carbon dust from an exhaust leak. My headers leak condensation at the same location under the car and it is black dust in condensation drops. Next time you get your car on a lift check it out. One other thing... I think the ceramic dust from the clutch is white. I was in a parade and my car was covered with white dust from the clutch at the end of the parade.

Thanks guys!

I'm going to have the car lifted and have a check under the engine/transmission.

The car is kept in a somewhat open garage in my building, I drive it every few weeks since I travel out of town a great deal.

I do notice that when it rains, depending on the season, there is a lot of condensation on the cars in the garage.

I feel this is related to undercarriage condensation and break dust.

Much like the dust that forms on the outside of the car when we drive it, a good portion must be forming on the undercarriage.

Will keep my eyes open and others posted.

Update from Ford: The black dust on the garage floor is really clutch dust. This is a normal reaction to use and wear of the clutch.

There is an open slot on the clutch protective housing (shield), at the bottom, which allows for buildup of the dust to exit.

I've not heard much on this issue on this or other forums and decided to update this topic in case others have a similar problem.

phr, I had the 500 up on the ramps for an oil change the other day. It's 2nd change in three years. Car has 4100 miles on it. When I backed it down and out of the garage the other day to go for a spin, I noticed a pile of what looked like mascara, or the iron that sticks to a magnet in the sandbox in grade school? On an otherwise clean garage floor, there was no other apparent reason for this debris piled there. It would have been right underneath the bellhousing on the tranny in relation to where it was up on the ramps.

Anyway, I pm'd Grabber who is very estute to this subject, and he has told me that it is totally normal, as well as you found out from FORD. I just wanted to hear it from someone other than the Ford guys, that have a habit of "denying the claim" so to speak! Lol... I still find it curious that after 4000 miles of somewhat non-agressive driving that there would be that much powder or residue from the clutch disc? I am like you however...have no real TSB symptoms, other than a small 1-2 shift bump when cold.

Had the same bump with 1-2 shift beginning early. Gradually worsened - ended up doing the TSB at 17K. I also drive non-aggresively. Grabber was a big help for me on this TSB thing. Once the TSB is done (assuming it is done correctly) shifting should be smooth all the time.

John,

It's not White. It's black. Trust me.

Can't answer about black dust, but I had a problem with some "white dust" on the stang one time and the boys from DEA took care of it for me. Those guys move pretty fast too!

Same black dust on the garage floor for me....and now my clutch goes out at 13,000 miles of daily driving ('09 bought from new).

Waiting for the 'Senior Tech' availability to have the latest TSB performed at the dealer.

Wonder if the black dust is a pre-cursor or early warning of the dread 07-09 model year clutch failure??......

I just had my clutch changed out and the bell housing had black dust inside it from the original stock clutch.
