noisy 3.73's - FRPP vs. Ford Lightning gears

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with John Griggs at Griggs Racing. I'm scheduled to head to Petaluma July 2nd for my GR40ST rear suspension 're-torque' and inspection.

I'm also having them pull my 4.10's in exchange for 3.73's. I love the 4.10's on the street but they're just way too much gear for the road course.

Anyway, I already purchased a set of FRPP 3.73's and the 4.10's I am running now are also FRPP's. John mentioned that the FRPP 3.73's are especially renown for being extremely noisy, even more so than the FRPP 4.10's. He suggested that I instead purchase the Ford gears, which are apparently a lot quieter (he did say that it's a roll of the dice and that some FRPP gear sets have been just fine, but most have been noisy as all hell). He said that the Ford gears are the same ones installed in the Lightning and the Bullitt.

I don't doubt John's knowledge at all about just about anything, when it comes to my car. I'm looking for other thoughts and experiences with either sets, Ford or Ford Racing. Why are the Ford gears less noisy than the Ford Racing gears? Where can I buy the Ford gears, other than a dealer? Does anyone have a part #, in case I do end up at a dealer? Is pricing the same? My time is limited with this, so I appreciate any feedback.

I have had 2 sets of FRPP 3.73's installed (01 Bullitt & 06 Roush) with no issues with noise. The Shelby will be getting a set of 3.73 installed in a few weeks..

Part #M4209 F373N / Jegs or Summit should be a good source

You should also consider adding a torsion diff like a Eaton truetrac http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/ProductsServ...etrac/index.htm

Hey Kerry thanks for the input. I've already got the FRPP 3.73's on hand. I'm looking for info on where to buy the regular Ford (not Ford Racing) 3.73's.

I might have to give the dreaded dealer a call after all! ;)

The truetrac is a great idea.

I had FRPP 3.73's installed and they are dead quiet. My local Ford dealer did the install and I couldn't be happier. I did ask them about whine, slap, etc. before the install and was told if the installer was experienced and took the necessary time to get it right there should not be a problem. The mechanic that did mine has been doing gears for over 30 years and I guess it shows because I can't hear a thing. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Chill. Maybe I should just give the FRPP's a shot after all. I'm really happy with my 4.10's as far as noise and whatnot. Mr. Griggs just had me nervous for a bit! ;)

It cost me $673 of which just over $100 was parts (they didn't reuse anything). This does not include the cost of the gears. I think I paid like $189 or so for them. I believe it was more than it should have cost. Mac (Lulu) put me in contact with a friend of his in Jacksonville that quoted me $400 something plus parts for the install (again not including the gears). So comparing the two I think I paid a couple hundred extra for the Ford install and warranty. Don't know that it was worth it but I'm extremely pleased with the work they did and how they treated me and the car. That and if anything goes wrong with the rear end they will take care of it. Those things, while not quantifiable, are worth something.

Hope this helps.
