4th to 5th

Do I just suck or is there a problem with the gate into reverse? I'm used to just pushing the stick away from my, diagonally, to get from 4th to 5th, but in my GT500 it just gets stuck - I'm assuming in the gate to reverse. Advice?

I believe there is a lockout on reverse with 4/5 gear shift.........

I just give slight right pressure on the gearshift from 4/5 and no problem.......

Yeah, it wont actually go into reverse. It just catches. That normal?

My first transmission required making an easy/slow shift from 4th to 5th. The transmission that Ford replaced it with shifts as easy from 4th to 5th as 2nd to 3rd at any rpm. Recommend the low rpm, slow shift to 5th. If that doesn't work, take back to a dealer.

You recommend a low rpm, slow shift to 5th? What about, if, say, I don't know, I'm driving it, say, fast? Instead of like a minivan?

Since the car will redline at 6,000 rpms and will be going 155 mph in 4th, you don't really need to cram it into 5th. :shift:

I know what you mean though, it feels a little weird pushing it towards reverse.

:-) I guess I'm trying to figure out if the TSB was messed up since it seems they replaced 5th and 6th...

I understand. I just recommend trying the low rpm shift to see if it makes a difference.

I've had the KR shifter in my 2009 GT500 for a week or so now. The first thing I noticed was how direct and precise the shifts had become. Especially, the shift to reverse. It is far easier to know where you are (gear wise) or where you are going (regardless of your intentions). Finding reverse is no longer a mystery or a fear. Consider the upgrade, if for nothing else, a new found love of finding the gear that takes you backwards.

I bought the same shifter to have installed when I got my TSB done. Of course they didn't do the TSB so my shifter now sits, where it has since it arrived, on the floor of my garage... so sad :(

The shifter in the GT500 is SLOPPY compared to the stock GT shifter, it was one of the first things I noticed, and one of the first things I wanted to address.

Never have missed with the KR shifter. Most folks appear to be so concerned about the possibility of a 4-3 shift by accident that they overestimate how far over they need to go to catch 5th. The KR shifter will increase your confidence immensely....just my .02

Hi TSB 08-16-04 Group,

I actually just slightly ground the gears (reverse) one time while trying to get into 5th! Scared the #%^ out of me! I like to go from 4th to 6th sometimes just to be safe!

Also Thanks Grabber and everyone else for the answers to my questions about upgrading my clutch plate. I will keep the new ceramic one till it wears out.

IMATK - My Short Shifter from Ford is also sitting in the garage along with the one piece drive shaft waiting for me to get a new job so I can afford to pay the local Ford Dealership to put it in. The Ford rep that came out to supervise the install of TSB 08-16-04 refused to let the mechanic at the dealership in HMB (James Ford) put the "Ford Racing" short shifter in when they did the job. My warranty runs out in 1500 miles so maybe I will have a job by then and can afford to pay someone to do it? Any one in the SF Bay area knows a shop that can do it for a reasonable price? Since I am not working I can assist.

In addition I have found that different "tunes" affect shifting characteristics and whether the car is hot or cold (rear tire pressure hot/cold?) also has an impact. Cold is easier but when it warms up you have to feather it in not get the shudder. The TSB helped this problem but it still requires a bit of skill to do the shifts perfectly. I have a close friend who races Porsches as a hobby and he also had trouble with the clutch! (That made me feel better about my shifting skills...and I was able to give him a hard time about not being able to drive cars with real power!)

Best Regards Everyone,

MSB Mustang / Mark
