"Fail Safe Mode"???

My brother's GT500 just shut down for the 2nd time in a week due to 'Fail Safe Mode'. WTH is this? He's running a ton of mods and a custom tune, but it's run fine for months on the tune he has.

The only thing that he mentioned was that his JLT carbon fiber intake had caved in at the throttle body about 1/2 inch and was just replaced yesterday with a new one. So basically, his engine was drawing in some unfiltered air for a bit. The confusing part to me is why would it go to "Fail Safe Mode" before AND after this problem? Thanks for any help.

IT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER TS MEMBERS THAT THEIR JLT INTAKE TUBE HAS EITHER

COME LOOSE OR HAS BEEN CRACK WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLEBODY

THIS CAN CHANGE INLET FLOW , TEMPERATURE AND CAUSE THE CAR TO GO INTO FAIL

SAFE MODE. IT MIGHT BE WISE TO DOUBLE CHECK THE INLET TUBE TO MAKE SURE IT

IS ATTACHED PROPERLY. ADDITIONALLY, IT MIGHT BE REQUIRED THAT YOU CLEAR

ANY CODES FROM THE ECM. I WOULD TALK WITH THE GUYS FROM JLT OR WHOMEVER

DID YOUR BROTHERS TUNE FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. JUST MY $.02

Does he have any cooling mods? I know it'll pull timing if it gets hot but I didn't think it would go into Failsafe.

It will enter Failsafe mode if either the water or oil temps get too high. I've done it twice while on track with ambient temps in the upper 90's. I've learned to short shift to manage the engine temps in summer conditions. maybe someday I'll buy one of Van's puller fan H/E's, but I had just installed the AFCO when he announced his piece :banghead:

If the airflow isn't the problem, then it may be temperature............

+1

Mine went into "Fail Safe" at a HOT California Speedway once.

Hmmm, mine went into 'Fail Safe Mode' during a 90 minute traffic jam in FL, outside temp about 90. After i got out of the traffic jam with an engine restart it did fine. It has done it once while in cruise on the interstate ambient about 70. And once when the hose clamp holding the air filter on came loose and it was sucking some unfiltered air (luckily i fixed that problem quickly). No problems the last 2000 miles driven.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. He's got at it at a shop in Simi today. He checked the intake last night and said it was snug all around.

Both times it's happened, he's able to kill the key, keep it rolling, fire it back up, and everything goes back to normal.

I'll try to get an update later today.

Hey Ken,

What shop does your brother use in Simi?

Thanks,

Dan

My bad, he brought it to B&D Racing in Van Nuys today. He said they fixed it up in 10 minutes.

I thought he was using a shop in Simi this whole time, but I guess it was B&D that did the Griggs install and just about everything else he's had done.
