Changing The Shifter Handle ?

Recommended Posts

What kind of a job is it to swap out the shifter handle to the aftermarket ball? I'm not sure if it's a bolt on or if you have to get into the transmission.

I'm not big on alterations but I hate the stupid shifter they put on there is a joke, that has to be the worst shift knob ever.

There is picture of the shifter lever in this thread (Click Here). Just unscrew the stock knob and take the boot off, unbolt the stock lever and replace with a new one like this (Click Here).

If you replace the stock shifter with a short throw, that will take more work...

Hope this helps...

You have a couple of choices here. I opted to replace the entire handle with a Ford Racing polished stainless steel handle with a white ball knob (M-7213-K). This handle has no rubber isolation at its attachment point so it has the feature of transmitting some tranny noise to the cabin in the form of a light buzzing while in certain gears and RPMs. The OEM handle is wrapped in rubber where it attaches to the shifter mechanism to damp out NVH. However, the FR handle does offer a more positive shift feel due to the solid attachment. FR also offers a black handle/ball combination. Installation is pretty simple.

Here's an updated "How-to" at another site.

You can also order an aftermarket knob for use with the OEM handle. Grabberpony.com makes a nice custom ball knob in various colors and engraving. You'll need to order the boot adapter for use with the OEM handle and specify the correct threading on the knob (OEM handle thead = 12mm x 1.25)

Or you can do both like I did - FR Handle and Grabber Pony knob (FR Handle thread = 3/8" x 16 TPI):

There are other options as well - these are just two that I am familiar with.

Can someone please confirm, a picture would be great.

Does the FRPP, part # M-7213-K, "KR" chrome shifter shaft say "HURST" on it?

I am thinking about getting the Shelby short throw shifter and change out the shaft with the chrome "HURST" logo shaft.

IMO, I really do not like the look of the SHELBY billet shaft, plus it looks shorter in height.

I have seen the "HURST" logo chrome shifter shaft on a Shelby GT and a 07 or 08 Shelby Terlingua.

Is there a different part # for the "HURST" logo chrome shifter shaft? Where can you get one? Will it fit the GT500 6 speed?

Thank you for your help and replies.
