Obama: Healthcare 'not a luxury' any more

Healthcare sector set to hold down costs

WASHINGTON, May 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate is considering levying a tax on sugary soft drinks to help pay for the overhaul of the nation's healthcare system, political sources say.

Unnamed Senate aides told Tuesday's Wall Street Journal key lawmakers are weighing the idea behind closed doors, which the Congressional Budget Office has estimated could yield as much as $24 billion in the next four years to help pay for an expansion of health insurance to all Americans.

The measure is reportedly prompting protests from the U.S. beverage industry and could spark a backlash from consumers who would be forced to pay several more cents per 12-ounce bottle or can of soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas.

Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told the Journal the tax would be fair because such drinks drive up health costs for everyone by contributing to obesity, diabetes and other illnesses.

"Taxes are not going to teach our children how to have a healthy lifestyle," countered Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association, saying it instead backs efforts to limit sugary beverage consumption in schools.

Lets see.....he gave Chrysler to the UAW (55%), wants to raise taxes on coca cola, pepsi, etc, raise taxes on health care benefits, raise taxes on 401 K's, and that is in the first 100 days. We can't afford even 4 months of communism, let alone 4 years.

You ain't seen nothing yet! Just wait until they shove that bogus carbon tax through! That will big the biggest tax hoax since the personal income tax on wages was unconstitutionally passed!

Who cares about the GOP? They are the same as the dems! They are all in the same. The ONLY reason they seperate themselves as two different parties is solely to keep the country divided. This is the ONLY reason they all continue to keep getting re-elected. They just play a game by blaming each other when things go bad and everyone votes the other party in. They after they screw it up more they vote the other party in again. At the end of the day no matter which one wins, they continue to screw the people over, violate the constitution, and take more and more of our rights away.

They ALL need to be booted!

Problem is boot them all out and replace them with what??????????

Sadly there isn't enough to run against them all, but the idea is regardless of party, whoever is currently serving needs to be voted out! That means no matter who is running against them, that is the person to vote for just to vote the current crook out! This will be the only way to send a strong enough message to Washington that the people are not taking it any more! Those that are voted in will know if they don't do the right thing they will be out in the next election. We need a 100% turn over just to replace them ALL! Especially those that have been there for many years! FIRE THEM ALL!!!

I fully expect we will see a proposal to substantially raise the Federal gasoline tax to help pay for the new energy programs.

Not only that, but you will see a HUGE price increase on top of that once they shove their carbon tax through!

What you spend now to pay for everything you buy now throughout the year, plan on spending double to triple that to buy the same things in the future!

People are BROKE now! Losing jobs, in debt up to their eyeballs, and they have no money left and can barely get by now. After they pass this big hoax it will put people in the streets. You will see a major increase in homeless people!

This only affects people who make over $250k right? That's what he said.

No. He said he would not raise your PERSONAL INCOME TAX if you make under $250k year! INSTEAD....he will tax the sh*t out of everything else! So you won't see a personal income tax increase, but instead you will see major tax increases on everything you buy in addition to every manufacturer and service provider raising the crap out of prices to cover their huge cost increase from the carbon tax hoax!

The idea is to completely destroy and wipe out the middle class forcing the population to become slaves to the government by getting them to accept government as the only solution to fixing their problems by taking care of them. Only everyone will be a thousand times worse off! By the time the people figure out what happened it will be too late to do anything about it because the people will be completely powerless!

The state of affairs is just crazy. Every day something is a crisis that will end life as we know it unless the government takes it over. Common folks, taxing coke. Does anyone really believe that this is going to solve anything? And it ain't going to stop at coke. Frosted flakes are next. The list is endless.

The irony is, this is most likely a regressive tax in that, I would bet, more poor folks drink coke than the rich. Whoops, it's no longer only the top 5% that will see a tax increase. Change, we've got it. The question is, how long can we survive with it.

Well didn't they get a surprise? They voted a bigger crook in!

There were numerous people other than Obummer and McCain that the people could have voted for. They chose the worst one of the bunch!

New 'Sin' Tax

The Senate Finance Committee today is hearing proposals on how to pay for President Obama's proposed universal health care plan, which is expected to cost more than $1 trillion. Among the proposals, as Consumer Affairs reports: A three-cent tax on sodas as well as other sugary drinks, including energy and sports drinks like Gatorade. Diet sodas would be exempt.

"While many factors promote weight gain, soft drinks are the only food or beverage that has been shown to increase the risk of overweight and obesity, which, in turn, increase the risk of diabetes, stroke, and many other health problems," Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is pushing the idea, said in his testimony. "Soft drinks are nutritionally worthless…[and] are directly related to weight gain, partly because beverages are more conducive to weight gain than solid foods."

Hold on to your, 'Fruit Loops', Donuts, Hamburgers, Fries and Potato Chips,

'Here comes Change'
