James Hill
Having had a similar problem, I would think maybe the plugs.
SGT4265
Is this an induction backfire, or an exhaust backfire?
bullittmansparts
Having had a similar problem, I would think maybe the plugs. I'll try plugs next.....There is heavy corrosion on the plug end just up from the hoop enclosing the electrode. What's up with that?
bullittmansparts
Is this an induction backfire, or an exhaust backfire? Pretty sure its induction.
SGT4265
I'll try plugs next.....There is heavy corrosion on the plug end just up from the hoop enclosing the electrode. What's up with that? That corrosion is a problem with plugs in a 3-valve eng. Its a build-up from the combustion process, it also causes the plugs to break off inside the heads if it gets to thick. There's TSB from Ford on this concern that shoulod be followed when removing & installing plugs, its been discussed on a previous thread. If your experiencing an induction backfire, I would check fuel pressure, make sure its to specs. A fuel filter would also be a good idea just to be sure its not clogged. 69dejavue
Be sure to use the anti-seize compound on the threads if you replace the plugs. Ford did not use that on the plugs from the factory.
SGT4265
Dont forget, at 6000 RPM, youre probably getting close to the rev limiter. I believe its set at around 61-6200, but i'm not absolutley sure on that.

69dejavue
How many miles did you have on the engine and any trouble changing the plugs?
bullittmansparts
How many miles did you have on the engine and any trouble changing the plugs? They were the originals and they were coked up pretty bad. 21500 miles. Plugs are cake to change. Just need a couple of extensions to get there and a magnets handy to pull up the plugs.
