jassenmacher
Anyone have an issue with gear break in and early pinion failure at less than 500 miles on the new gear set? Mine blew up and caught fire last Wednesday. Just a heads up for those of you with the 605 package. Noticed a vibration at speed prior to pinion failure. May want to have it checked out prior to it exploding on you. Craig from SAI was very helpful at shipping new assembly, but WTF, I wasn't even getting on it, really good about the break in. Any ideas...
shel-b001
I would think this is an isolated case maybe a bearing inner race to tight bearing over heated or a multitude of things. When its apart maybe they can determine what went wrong. In any case its the pits.

I seem to remember somebody else posting a similar thing a coupe of weeks ago, you would have to think that the pinion bearing preload was too high, may they overtorqued or used a crush sleeve that was too small . If the bearing preload was too high the outer (front) pinion is smaller and will fail first. Hope it all works out Al

Too tight on the bearing and the front failed. Waiting for a kit from SAI at my local Ford Dealership in Toledo, Ohio. Hopefully they get it right. Should be done this week. In retrospect, the rear end was acting a little funny even during my bearing/pinion break in period. Thanks for the input, lot's of knowledge around this site. The front pinion went secondary to being set to tight out of SAI and finally seized after 400 miles on the new rear end. Will let you know how it turns out.
