handheld tuner, will it help stock car?

Recommended Posts

hi to all, i was pondering getting some work done on my shelby gt auto. it is bone stock engine wise. i want to get 300 rwhp and i am looking for ways to get that done for $2,000. i spoke with a local mustang tuner and he recommended a C & L air intake over the stock Ford cai and some pullies along with a handheld tuner. with those mods he thought i might be able to get around 285-290 rwhp. he also said he has had problems with check engine lights going off when headers are installed on 06 and up mustang gt's. if i had the headers i could eclipse 300 rwhp. What do you all think. He said with just the tune the car will snap up quite a bit.

IMHO, it is rather obvious that the wrench you spoke with has no clue to what's inside a Shelby GT.

You already own a 90mm MAF and a low restriction air induction system. What does C&L have to offer you? Nothing. Keep searching for tuners.

Read my sig for an update on the chase to 300 RWHP. from a stock engine.

The only performance mod I made to my car was a custom tune. The difference from stock was tremendous. I've used both Brenspeed and Bamachips. Both were very good companies to deal with and as you add mods to your car, they will modify your tune for free.

is it as simple as ordering a handheld tuner and plug and play? this is new to me. i've never used a handheld programmer before.

Yes, you can buy the tuner with the custom tune preloaded. For me it was more cost effective to buy the tuner on ebay and then have the tuning companies email me the custom tunes.

so its as simple as calling Brenspeed, telling them the car and they send me a tuner preloaded with what my car requires based on my mods, of which i dont have any? if so, sounds simple.

Before you call, make sure you have your car's strategy code. It's located under the hood on the passenger side, on a little sticker by the fuse box.

Should be a 4 digit number.

ok,sounds like a plan. i'll get the number and order the tuner to start with. i guess the best tune would be the 93 octane tune right tek? we can still get 93 at sunoco

Buy a tune for the octane you run all of the time, whether it's 91 or 93.

I highly recommend Bamachips race tune.

I've got the brenspeed tune. It comes with an 87,91, and 93 octane tune. I've got the 93 tune installed in mine and it takes about 5 minutes to install. You can call brenspeed when you start to install and they will help you right over the phone as you install. This will definately make a difference in the feel of the car. It's not a matter of getting a lot of horsepower but the right horsepower and torque where you need it the most. Bama and Brenspeed are probably the most popular on this forum. Good-Luck.

yes it will especialy with the automatic as the ford/shelby tune is real soft in the shift dept.

My automatic shifts completely different with my Brenspeed tune. I love it. It now has the shift points as if I was driving a stick. :shift:

I did the brenspeed sct along with BBK short equal lengths, and steeda pulleys. Seat of the pants improvement. Hoped to make 300 rear wheel but only 290 as my local dyno guy predicted. torque was only 299?? I am very pleased with improvememt for money but I would skip the headers if I had it to do over. Fairly difficult job I thought with no lift.

I also noticed very little improvement with the JBA shorty headers. I plan to install long tubes asap.

I don't know about easier to install but they are considerably more expensive. I've got the JBA shorty headers and i may have gained 10hp at best but for the cost i don't think they are worth it . Might be okay if you do your own labor but if not then to much money per h.p.
