Letter to My Employees

To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a Back Story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last years Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the BACK STORY :

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, someday, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations... you never realize the Back Story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bailout all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes. Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here.. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I'll fire you and your coworkers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

So, if you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about....

Very Very Well said Cooby.

I recently sold my share of a painting company that took me and my partner 20 years to

build...I so can relate to the part of your letter where nobody realizes how hard it is to

start and maintain a company...the first 5 or 6 years we had our company we worked

16 to 20 hour days just to barely keep our heads above water...when the employees

8 hours is up their gone... they drink beer and spend time with their families...you

as a company owner can not do that...or you'd be out of business very quickly

...now when you have a government against you on top of all that...your chances

of not making it is astronomical and the people should blame the government...not

the small company owners...there was alot of changes coming down the pipe here

in Canada....that was one of the reasons I took the money and ran...I wish everyone

out there all the luck in the world because in these hard times it is not going to be

easy for small businesses to survive.

Amen to that it just seems to simple :headscratch:

I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive.

Power combined with greed is a horrible thing. Power is what our leaders are hungry for and greed is what motivates them to pass the laws to get the votes they need to keep the power, like Robin Hood took from the rich to give to the poor but he was still a crook but the masses loved him !

"...a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive"

Well said- I have to give my story on this. Not on the business side but just those words are what is happening more and more.

PRODUCTIVE- A 23 yr old prior service member who works at a Hospital and goes to school, married and have purchased our first house at 23. My EMT-P hourly pay was way above the average minimum pay but somehow my wife's teacher salary and mine were just enough for us to get by but we've always pulled through.

I thank Uncle Sam for my GI BILL but was it enough for RN school? Not really, so I applied for financial and got denied. Why you may ask, well its because I am productive and have my ducks in a row so we are not going to help you but thanks for applying.

I'm like WTF? Yes, I work and not leech off of the govt. I've put my life on the line for 5 years but somehow being productive in life meant a bad thing.

UNPRODUCTIVE-The students who gets financial aid because they have 5 kids at home (their parent's home), don't work and already receives govt help with food stamps and so forth and 90% of the time drive a better car than me, have all that bling-bling crap on but they get help for being a :censored: -up.

I understand mistakes happen, one kid OK but 5 kids? I know some people had it worse than I did but damn it why oh why do good people have to be punished for other people's mistakes?

It just strikes a nerve in me when I see that my taxes goes to these free-loaders because I worked part time and because both my wife and I had a income and a house I was seen by the powers that be in the financial aid world as a "you've got it all made" so get lost, the baby momma needs the money because her life story is so much more worse than yours.

I'm not against govt help for those who truly needs it but there are some out there just living off of you and me and somehow the govt keeps giving things to them. Hold them accountable for their actions-maybe the military has instilled the view of "You :censored:-up pay the consequences, period".

Well, enough rambling, carry on gents....

I will admit that I did not write this letter as it was passed along to me. But, we do have a bussiness and see this with emplotees all the time and know what it is like to give up half of what you make and it is still not enough. My wife could have wrote this letter as it fits her to a tee.

Of course! The New Orleans situation was a great example of what the more liberal and socialist thinking will achieve - helplessness and complete dependence upon the government. You would think some lessons would have been learned from that, but they just blamed Bush! :hysterical:

Speaking of New Orleans, how is it that thousands of people could not get out of New Orleans with 4 days notice when it was 80 degrees but they could travel to Washington DC for the inaguration in one day when it was only 20 degrees?

What are you going to do other than vote and move on...complaining does not help anything.

And BTW I lived with no car and no money and in a unheated warehouse in a cold climate to build my companies up..people in my family questioned my sanity and so did I.-40 degree sleeping bags do not keep you warm at that temp...

I try not to focus on the tax thing though I just focus on making more money... :happy feet:

Don't believe the HYPE!!!

This is a classic an example of the Robber Barron syndrome that Corporate America is using.

They ride around in multi-million dollar private jets... yatchs... own on avg 30 or more realestate properties each value well into

the millions... plus get a $600 million in bonus at the end of the year (not salary... bonuses).

They outsource to skirt paying taxes and exploit labor while skimming revenues at the same claiming "Woah is Me",

then lay everyone off including the employee in the mail room... while blaming it on taxes and whoever else they

can use as a scapegoat.

These "smoke and mirrors" tactics (corruption) that were employed by the Robber Barrons and politictions in the early

1900's and led to the "Great Depression" are back in full swing now as a result of de-regulation (no oversight).

That's why we are on the verge of another Great Depression again while Fat Cats and Politicians in bed with them

made their millions.

The sad part is that Small Businesses and "Mom and Pop" are using these very same tactics now.

Research the salaries of Fortune 1000 CEO's and Chairmans and you'll get the drift... e.g. look at Barnard Madoff's net worth.

Look at all the billions upon billions in TAFT money that went to BoA, Merrill Lynch, AIG Execs, etc as "Bonuses".

How much money do these MF'ers need!!!

Unfortunately it has trickled down to small business who now follow Corporate America's lead.. cook the books... take the money and run just like he said.

If structured properly, most businesses should get refunds due to asset depreciation, expenses and other write-offs etc...

Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see...

IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!

Don't believe the HYPE!!!

This is a classic an example of the Robber Barron syndrome that Corporate America is using.

They ride around in multi-million dollar private jets... yatchs... own on avg 30 or more realestate properties each value well

into the millions... plus get a $600 million in bonus at the end of the year (not salary... bonuses).

They outsource to skirt paying taxes and exploit labor while skimming revenues at the same claiming "Woah is Me",

then lay everyone off... blaming it on taxes and whoever else they can use as a scapegoat.

These "smoke and mirrors" tactics (corruption) that were employed by the Robber Barrons in the early 1900's and led to the "Great Depression" are back in full swing now as a result of de-regulation (no oversight).

That's why we are on the verge of another Great Depression again.

The sad part is that "Small Businesses" and "Mom and Pop" are using these very same tactics now.

Looks like to me that he's using this forum as a sounding board to gage what kind of response he'll get out of his employees.

If the majority here falls for it... so well his employees.

Prior to the crash in 1929, that is exactly what many small business did because they were scared and they wanted to

secure whatever funds (company revenues) they could get their hands on since the banks weren't loaning due to many

of them had failed and the U.S. Govt froze accounts.

Screw the money they owed banks... screw the employees... screw the customers. They looked out for number one.

(Sorta, kinda like what is happening today right now...)

Granted, I have to give him credit... he does make an valiant effort to grease the skids up front in the beginning of his story.

Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see...

This country is in serious trouble and we should not be addressing the issues with "smoke and mirrors".

We need to handle it by being straight up from the jump or we will find ourselves in a "Great Depression" 10 times

far worse than "Black Tuesday" in 1929.

Coming around a corner instead of addressing problems head on only exacerbates the chances of that happening.

Speaking of New Orleans, how is it that thousands of people could not get out of New Orleans with 4 days notice when it was 80 degrees but they could travel to Washington DC for the inaguration in one day when it was only 20 degrees?

Let the guy split I will take his 2.2 million customers and his income after he pays taxes as well.

I could use a fifth company it gives me pleasure...

Taxes suck but I suspect this is another "internet" letter written as fact when it is not even real...

That's the America Spirit!!!
