When was it your first time you met Carroll Shelby?

Recommended Posts

Going through my external hard drive and found these pics from Oshkosh from 2005. My Squadron had a C-130H on static display there and we were park right next to the Ford venue with all the Ford and Ford owned company cars on display as well. I was approached by a PR guy from Ford who wanted to take some pics of our C-130H and two Roadsters together. I asked the A/C for the permission and he gave the green light for the impromptu photo shoot. About an hour later the two Roadsters show up at the back of the plane and along with them came Carroll Shelby and his wife Cleo! I did not even own a SGT back then. Heck, I don't think the SGT was familiar to me then? But I did get some good shots of Carroll on my plane. He signed our Oshkosh baseball caps for each one of the crew that was there. I wear it from time to time at gatherings. But that wouldn’t be the last time I would meet Carroll Shelby. I had an opportunity to meet and talk to him and Cleo for some time at the Ford V.I.P. tent at Air Venture in 2007. Back then I had my CS8. Anyways here are some pics from the photo shoot.

Enjoy! -FB

In Terlingua. 4 months before the Shelby Bullrun I didn't know much about the man now I can tell you anything that has ever been written about him

Mr. Shelby Thanks again for signing my car in Terlingua. I just wish I wouldn't have been so hung over; the night before was pretty wild

I sure would like to see a picture of your 67 GT350. Thats one of my all time favortie Shelbys! -FB

It has been apart since around 98 or so. It was an 18K mile original car when I got it. I showed it a few times, but could not compete with the restored ones, so I pulled it apart for a full restoration. Its not much to see now...has been sitting apart in my shop for years. I will get bashed if I post any pics of it the way it looks now!! One of these days I will get back to it...

I first met Carroll at the Boulder, Colorado Shelby Museum in December of 2007. I had wanted to purchase an expensive token to get near him and have him sign something, but they were all sold out and most people were held at a distance from him. I was heartbroken. I attended with my then 15 year old daughter, who managed to squirm herself through the crowd to get great pictures of him on stage during his monologue. When the next speaker stepped up, Carroll stepped off the stage right next to my daughter, who wished him a happy early birthday. Carroll put his arm around her, and she promptly handed the camera to another visitor and got the enclosed shot. For Free! I was so jealous! As he was leaving, his aides cleared a path for him to exit, and my daughter slipped under an arm, walked right up to him, and asked if she could get a picture of him with her dad, who had wanted to meet him all his life. Carroll just melted, and motioned me to come forward, where I got a pic of the two of us, also enclosed. That moment meant a lot to me, and my daughter got a ton of brownie points that night. Carroll may be showing his age a bit (and has every right to), but I've lost 50 lbs since the photo was taken. Sure would like to get a retake...

At the Shelby American Collection Dec, 2008. This was right after my wife and I told him we were donating our BJ SGT at the auction coming up. He said "Really?" and then we chatted privately.

Just after that Bob Bondurant's wife asked me to take a photo of Carroll and her. Then she ran to get Bob. After that I handed the camera to someone and they took this one.

I was at the Christmas party at the Shelby American Collection in December 2005. It was a cold night, so I was still wearing my coat (it is a replica of my father's WWII flight jacket). I was talking with some friends when one of them noticed someone looking at my jacket. I spun around to see Carroll Shelby closely examing the garment I was wearing! He looked, and asked "Air Corps?" I replied "not exactly" He saw the breast patch (an original from my father) he perked up and barked "I'LL BE G_D D___ED, do you know the correct name of the unit for the patch?" I replied "Yes sir...A-V-G" He was amazed to know that any of them were still alive!
