Grabber
These new smoking laws seem to be spreading to alot of states. We have them in my home state of Washington and Oregon just passed it as well. No smoking in any restraunts or bars at all - total ban. When I was in High School we all referred to smoking as "Butt Weezing". The term has stuck with me. I have been lucky to of never of had the habit....so I appreciate the law !! :happy feet: Associated Press Published: March 9, 2009 Virginia Governor Tim Kaine signed a bill Monday that generally restricts smoking to separate rooms that have their own ventilation. It takes effect Dec. 1. Kaine had been working for years for a total ban on smoking in all restaurants, but compromised with lawmakers in the bill that passed last month. The measure also exempts private clubs and open-air outdoor areas of bars. The first substantial tobacco curb is remarkable, however, in a state that began growing tobacco at Jamestown 400 years ago and is home to Philip Morris and its Marlboro cigarette factory, the world’s largest. http://www.tricities.com/tri/news/local/ar...king_ban/21447/
ejrail
We have a similar law here in Utah. I'm all for it. Ihave never tried it but the smoke sure messes with my allergies I appreciate anything that keeps it away from my nose.
mywickedshelby
NY & NJ have had the total ban for years........works well for me. Its even unlawful to stand within "so many feet" of the front door to prevent the butt weezers from cluddering the doorway with their nonsense. Atlantic City even banned smoking in their casinos, but for me, they stink so bad from when smoking was allowed, theyd have to tear them all down and start all over again for it to help. Besides, I heard the smoking ban was lifted in the casinos at the end of 2008, apparently the casino owners feel the pinch to their bottom line and voted to discontinue the ordinance....... outside of casinos (apparently no one cares about their health) you are good to go here. stump_breaker
I believe in the individual right of a person to pursue happiness as long as the pursuit of their happiness does not reasonably infringe on others or grossly offend morality. That makes pro-smoking arguments really difficult if not impossible.

kstrong
Smokes cost about 6.50 per pack of 25. Reserve smokes about $2.00 per pack of 25. I am so glad I quit. Cold Turkey, New Years 1991. :happy feet: Smoked close to two packs a day. Started when I was 15 in Kansas! (Moved there in 1969, came back to Ontario in 1980). I smoked Marlborough Red and Camel filtered. New Ontario law, it is illegal to smoke in car with minors under the age of 16. Big fine.
mywickedshelby
I hate it when I see people smoking around kids.... but you look at the movies from when we were kids and they all did it. If we only knew then what we know now huh?
kahmann
Government infringement IMO. It should be left up to the bar/restaurant owners and the public in general. If people don't want to be around smoking, then they won't go to those bars/eateries, which would inevitably drive individual businesses to change their own policies. Bars aren't health spas, by any means. Adults should be able to make their own decisions. Just my .02. Ken EDIT: I'd never bring my children to a smoke filled restaurant obviously. But that's my decision. I don't need the government to tell me that.
mywickedshelby
they passed these laws based on the health conditions of the bar & restaurant employees. Its a health issue for employees not a convenience to patrons issue.

You see Ken that's they way I want to believe but when you get right down to the root of the problem knowing what we know today about cigarettes, someone wanting to smoke in public is purely a selfish desire that is 100% harmful to everything and everyone so there is not really a "big government" argument. It most certainly is a big government issue. Is the job of the government to restrict everything potentially harmful? Then outlaw drinking. Outlaw welding. Outlaw breathing for christ's sakes. There was honestly a bill in my great state not long ago that sought to ban smoking in one's own car, because of the potential harm posed to other drivers sitting in traffic (who are already bathing in toxic tail pipe emissions). Give me a break. Ken

Give me a break. Ken Smoking is not "potentially harmful". It is harmful - 100%. Logic and reason have to prevail in this situation or one might also argue that shooting wildly into the air should not be illegal either. As far as smoking while alone in one's own vehicle, that should be off limits to the government but hey, we have to wear seat belts right? That is a full invasion of government for random tax money under the guise of "safety". Having said that though, there are actually situations where arguing for not wearing a seat belt is acceptable. When can it be argued that smoking around others is ever ok for anything other than self gratification and selfish desires? Not calling you out or anything, jut a discussion on the board open to anyone.... BTW, I smoked socially when acceptable and at work for several years and then one day just set them down and walked away. No cravings no nothing. I am one of the lucky ones. 2007GT
Florida has had that Law for a long time.....ALSO, you can't Smoke in a Stadium either, even an Open Stadium. We went to see my nephew pitch for the Mets a few weeks ago (spring training game) in Lakeland and I was surprised that you couldn't smoke in the stadium. However, you were allowed to smoke in the concession areas.
