mywickedshelby
My most famous Ash Wednesday kick was cigaretttes. I was a senior in High School and had been a pack a day smoker for several years (started early, tried to stunt my growth, but alas, it didnt work, Im 6'3"!) when Sister Rose Ellen mentioned that we should all be giving something up for Lent during the morning announcements, I got up, walked over to the garbage can, crumbled up my pack of cigs and threw them in. Much laughter resinated from my classmates as they witnessed my "statement". Frankly, I didnt really intend to quit forever at that moment, but became invigorated with the cause to see this through once everyone declared what they all thought was a lack of believeability in my act. I got thru that day, then the next, then my best friend challenged me to come up with a good reason to resume smoking after Easter. I couldnt. The only one I had was "I really enjoy it!" and we had already agreed I would have to do better than that! I never smoked cigarettes again. 28 years later and it all started with an Ash Wednesday commitment. This year, I am again trying to better my life. Maybe Im on to something. ilmor
During Lent this year I'm giving up my morning internet surfing (including Team Shelby) and coffee! In lieu of those I'm going to add prayer time and additional morning exercise.
olblue1062
I also am going to give up TS for Lent...May sound silly but it will truly be a sacrifice for me as I enjoy following the daily action of the Shelby community. Maybe GT/SC conversions will be down to $5500 by then. Praised be Jesus Christ. See you in 46 days...

In lieu of those I'm going to add prayer time and additional morning exercise. And therein lies the true benefit to the discipline of fasting. Just "giving something up" accomplishes nothing. But when your daily routine hits that spot where "that something" is missing it is your cue to pray and allow the Spirit to lead you to repentence in areas that He directs. Quiet the physical world in order to hear more clearly the spiritual. Lent is all about focusing on the sacrifice our Lord made for our us and responding likewise out of gratitude and humility. And BTW it's not just a Catholic "thing"; it is a Christian "thing". The Book of Concord discusses fasting and its benefits, as does the Book of Common Prayer. NordicShelby
About two weeks ago I gave up drinking $5.00 Triple Carmel Turtles at the Coffee shop. It cost way too much and my waste line is now comparable to the Good Year Blimp. So I will just continue not drinking a 700 calorie coffee drink. Thanks Grabber for the inspiration........ SGT/SC#0471
This Thursday is 6 weeks not smoking for me. I smoked very few cigs for the last 7 years but had a serious health scare that made me stop. Wow things seem different. I had started smoking 25 years ago. I quit once for2 -3 years and started again. I have been doing alot of cardio 40 minutes a day or more and chewing a few nicotine gums...so far so good. Not easy, especially in my shop where I was used to grinding and wrenching with a smoke. They say it will fade I hope so. I will chew the gum forever if I have too. So far so good. I will carry on...
