19" wheels and bigger brakes?

Recommended Posts

Lots of folks have expressed a desire to keep their 18" wheels and frustrated with the lack of aftermarket brake options.

You can go with the Shelby S1 or GT 500 wheels and upgrade to the GT500 brakes ( I think this is true for the S1s)...an improvement but not the best option for a big increase in braking performance.

Or you can go with 20" wheels, but then your ride quality will be harsher than stock...which is already pretty firm.

So has anyone looked into 19" wheels? Will they work with the big brake systems guys are using with the 20s? If so then you would get the 20" wheel brake performance without as harsh a ride...still not as good as the original 18s, but maybe a good compromise.

It appears to me that most guys (not saying that your one of them, AFBLUE) may be overly concerned about braking performance, especially considering what they realistically need. I think some of these brake packages were intended to last through the 24 Hours of Daytona!

Take of a look at this Motor Trend article about the 2010 Mustang;

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes...test/index.html

In this article they state "Slide your right Nike from throttle to brake, depress with sufficient might to wake up the ABS, and the performance friction compound brake pads (another component of the Track Pack) will squeeze the four-wheel discs with enough fervor to erase 60 mph in only 108 feet-just as abrupt as a BMW 128i and 19 feet shorter than the Bullitt. Better yet, the binders are easy to modulate and seem calibrated for your foot's force."

Therefore, simply a switch to these Ford pads, or other performance pad such as Hawks, will give you some extremely good braking. I've just received in the mail a set of the Baer Decelerators

http://www.blueovalindustries.com/products.php?pid=99013366

which I will install with Hawk pads. I'm sure these will be as good or better than the 2010 Mustang tested, while still retaining the classic look of the polished bullit wheels.

Just a thought....

edit - one more thing I forgot to mention. For the best braking performance, you should also consider hi-performance summer tires. Our stock Goodrich KDWS (being all-season) are NOT the best performing tire out there! Stickier tires will stop the car more quickly also.

I personally don't like the look of 20" rims on our cars (or any other car for that matter).

18" is as big as I'll ever buy for any car and actually prefer 16's or 17's.

As for the brake kits, I've heard from 'bigcarl1' that Wilwood builds a kit with 6 piston calipers that'll clear our 18" rims.

Just an FYI.

There are for sure 19" wheels out there that will work with big brake systems. The orange Stillen car has 19" wheels front and rear (AXIS Hero's) with the 6 piston front kit, and 4 piston rear kit.

Hope that helps some

I have this set up on mine with the S/C, they work excellent I think you will be quite happy with your choice.

All very true. With my set up and wheels/tires, the difference is amazing! (See sig below)

I can't imaging what this thing would stop like with "big brakes". :dreamy:
