The Obama Presidency - Here Comes Socialism

Wow! Three Democrats nominated by Obama have problems paying their taxes. Humm, yet they think you aren't paying your fair share. Hypocrisy at its finest?

I guess they want us to pay more so they don't have to....

If you or me evaded taxes like they have, the IRS would wipe us out and ruin us for life. I am quite sure they will just pay up and that will be the end of it.

Can you say double standard?

Why don't we let the President speak for himself!

Oh, sure! Mia culpa makes it all better now. Silly us!

That should have come out in the vetting process before he was chosen. Isn't something like that easier to determine beforehand than WMD's in Iraq?

Excuses are like butt-holes: everyone has them and they all stink!

Yeah, it's gotta be tough to be so perfect too! :happy feet:

What? He didn't make ANY excuses!

Unlike the last President, who never apologized for the WMDs in 6 years, this one admits when he's wrong and moves on. It takes a big man to say as President "I screwed up!" and "we're going to to better". I respect that...I guess you do not.

I was off-handedly talking about your excusing him so easily. Politics as usual! No change here.

Actually - I think this whole experience is encouraging. Though it does demonstrate how difficult it will be to change the ways of Washington - even for those so moved to change it. It's a sobering reminder to Obama. He may have set the bar too high - but he now knows that he will be held accountable to meet his own standard. I would have expected he would have learned this sooner with the Timothy Geithner episode. But he's learned it nonetheless.

And that is what I do appreciate about him. I do appreciate his mia culpa. That was a virtue instilled in me as a Marine.

There is a such thing as scale...when I see Obama "Screwing" up like Bush did I'll be right there holding the sign next to ya!

Does the sign-holding thing only apply to Presidents? I ask because I haven't seen you with a sign over Barney Frank, et al, blocking measures to regulate Sallie Mae, and I consider that a pretty major blunder.

Yes, there is a scale, and I've seen the left bitch about lesser screw-ups from President Bush. Or do you not consider his selection to head HHS to be a major choice?

Generally, if you voluntarily disclose you have not paid taxes (for whatever reason), you simply refile and pay them with financial penalty. They dont (cant) "ruin you" for life whatever that means. Now of course if you are attempting to avoid taxes through criminal/fraudulent means and you are caught by the IRS you can go to jail.

We have all paid someone by cash knowing the recipient wont report it as taxable income or even traded/bartered an item for another without disclosing the income from the barter or had a yard sale without including the proceeds on our tax returns or not disclosed that winning from the office football pool or not paid witholdings for child care or borrowed a vehicle from work to pickup something for your personal use, etc etc.

I am not trying to excuse them, I agree with Obama that politicians should be held to a high standard with respect to paying taxes and obeying the laws of the land so to speak. I take him at his word on this. He said he was "angry' but I suspect he was dissapointed more than anything else.

It is refreshing to hear him willing to take responsibility for their indiscretions. Presidents in the past have often taken responsibility for very little if anything. Its always the CIAs fault, or congresses fault or the medias fault etc. Good on ya Obama...the buck does stop somewhere...finally someone with balls!

Did you "tolerate" Bush's "failures"?????????????? :hysterical:

Keeping in mind that I'm a centrist:

I don't have double standards if that's what you mean. I don't expect perfection out of any politician, because that sets you up for disappointment when they inevitably demonstrate that they aren't perfect. What has bothered me is the hypocrisy of some of the liberal members on this forum, (and in this country for that matter), who have no problems with attacking the failures of anyone that doesn't agree with them while ignoring the failures of those that do agree with them. It bothers me enough to point it out.

Believe me they like what they do. When i was in business i had a go around with the IRS one year, on a 12% federal excise tax on one of my big trucks that i had converted for a different type of work. It was quite apparent to me they were trying to get everything they could and then some. They acted like my money was theirs. I was worried that they were going to put a freeze on my accounts at one point.

Without going into details, i ended up proving they were over charging me for something that had already been paid. Had i rolled and never questioned it, they damn sure would have taken my money, and wrongly so.

It cost me a lot of time, money and stress anyway, which i never got compensated for. I can tell you from personal experience, with them you are guilty until proven innocent, unless your a politician that's buddy buddy with the heads of the agency.

Cheers
