Moleskin window felts installed.

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know I installed some window felts in the Shelby today. I plan on getting tint soon and have read lots about tint getting scratched because Ford has quit putting felts on the inside window wipe channel, so I decided it was worth the effort to do this. I took pictures along the way and would like to put together a nice how-to article to post on the site. Can anyone tell me how to edit my pictures to draw arrows to key points of interest and such as well as any other tips to make a nice how-to?

Sorry, this should have been posted in the mods section. If an admin. reads this, could you please move it?

Try putting your pics into a ms-word document & then use the drawing toolbar with arrows & wording. Then save it & then post that.

Thanks fastback ill appreciate the info, i had my wifes 06 honda accord tinted and the tint was scratched badly with vertical lines also . I was so pissed  i ripped all of the tint off and wasted $250., of hard earned cash. I believe it was jesse bolt who told me about the moleskin felts but i never looked into on how they were installed . I wouldnt want the same thing to happen to the stang when i get it . Thanks for any info you can share

No, I did not remove the entire door panel. I just pulled them back a little so I could get the window wipe channel out. I wish I could get my how-to to post. I really tried to make it nice and informative and now I can't share it.

If you want to send it to me at my home email as a Word document, I can see what I can do. I'll pm you.

Dave

Edit: I tried posting, but it won't work. Administrator, can you see why we can't upload files?

Thanks,

Dave

Fastback, I think part of the problem may be the size of the Word document...it's 44 Mb. I tried removing all pictures except one, and that made it 8 Mb...still very large. I'd recommend you change your camera setting to a lower resolution in the future....try to keep each pic below 1 Mb.

I first opened the pics in word and edited them to add the arrows as part of the picture (you had added them using the drawing tool rather than the picture editor, which means they were not part of the actual pictures...I could not post them this way). Then, I pasted the pics into paintbrush and resaved them, and posted them separately, this seems to have worked, although as you can see the picture quality is not as good doing it this way. In addition, I modified your writeup slightly to align with the pics as I posted them....hope that's ok.

Hope this is ok as a compromise.

Dave (Note* - Fastback created the below pics and writeup, except for the first one...I just helped him get it posted.)

Photo 1 is just for fun. It's Dr. Pepper. :hysterical:

Photo 2 & Photo 3 - Remove the trim piece inside the door handle area shown by the blue arrow. I removed the piece by pulling out on the handle and gently prying with a small flat screwdriver at the back portion of the piece where the red arrow is pointing. After removing this piece you will reveal a torx T27 screw that will need to be removed.

Photo 4 - The next thing I did was remove the trim piece where the side mirror adjustment is. This piece just pulls off easily with a gentle tug.

Photo 5 - After this I began removing the small bolts around the outer edge of the door panel. For this I used a ¼ inch drive ratchet, extension and a 7 mm socket. These two on the back portion will need to be removed.

Photo 6 - Here is another one at the front of the door that must be removed. This is it. Some people only remove these and then pull up and out on the door panel at the back near the door lock rod. Be sure to push down on the lock to make it easier to get the door panel up over it. I also chose to remove the bolt below the one shown in the last picture as well as the ones along the bottom of the door panel. It may not have been necessary but I figured it might make it easier to pry the door panel up and it didn’t take much extra time. After removing those 8 bolts I was ready to pry the door panel up and out to access the window wipe channel.

Photo 7 - This is with the door panel pried up and as you can see I’ve begun to lift the window wipe and remove it.

Photo 9 - Sand the area that will receive the moleskin with course sandpaper and then clean with rubbing alcohol and a lint free towel. After sanding and cleaning, allow the alcohol to completely evaporate and begin to install the felt. Take time to keep the felt straight as you apply it. I began to roll back the adhesive backing on the felt a little at a time as I pressed the felt onto the window wipe. Make sure to press firmly along the entire area so that the felt makes a good bond to the window wipe channel.

Photo 10 - This picture shows the wipe with the felt installed. After this it’s just a matter of putting it all back together. Press the front edge of the wipe back in the channel and slide it all the way back in. When you have this back in place, lift the door panel back over the wipe until everything lines up correctly. Reinstall the torx T27 screw in the door handle area. Place the trim piece back over this. Replace the screws that you took out around the door panel as well as the trim piece where the side mirror adjust. Roll your windows back up and leave them up at least 12 hours if possible and your done.

Photo 11 - Here’s mine with everything put back together. I hope you find this helpful. It really wasn’t that difficult. I had this done in a little over an hour for both doors and I was really taking my time and snapping pictures along the way.

All this for tinting...does it really get that sunny in Oklahoma? I would be more worried about ending up with rattles in the door later on and chasing them gremlins forever after...
