Isn't there anyone from the the niche line that could have provided some critical dates? I understand that they wouldn't know what you are calling the 'build date' but am wondering if anything was tagged differently (ie the bar code on any engine applied stickers) when they started bolting down the revised parts.

Tob

Nope.

They don't track this stuff at all.

All they do is crank out the motors.

We have this figured out with in 2 build days. Not bad for a bunch of carnuts.

The build date on your SVT cert will be the same as the one on the OASIS report.

I never got an SVT certificate. Was this something that came with the car or did it have to be requested separately? My car was delivered to my dealership from another dealership so it could have been left behind if it came with the vehicle. Who knows.

I have a report that was generate by my dealer the day I took delivery of my GT500. in the upper left hand corner of this paperwork it says "track a vehicle". The report is generated from the web site www.vehiclevisibility.dealerconnection.com.

this document states that it is "Ford Motor Company Confidential" so I am assuming you have to be a dealer to get to it?

anyway.... the specifics on page two are listed as:

In Order Processing Unscheduled - material hold July 14, 2008

In Order Processing Scheduled to Week Sep. 1 2008 July 31, 2008

In Order Processing Scheduled to Day Sep. 2 2008 Aug 22 2008

In Production Body Shop Aug 30 2008

In Production Trim Line Sep 02 2008

In Production Produced Sep 02 2008

My car was built on 09/02/08 and YES it has the new flywheel and clutch assembly.

vin # is 132785

I feel better now...... :shift:

Sweet!

That material hold may have helped you out!

yes that is what I was thinking !!

thanks Grabber for the build date info. Sept 3rd it is. The car had not been prepped by the dealer when I bought it. We checked the oil and I brought it home still wrapped in all the plastic. I took lots of pictures that day and when I unwrapped it I kept every scrap of the plastic I took off.

I plan on keeping the car the rest of my life. ( I am 50). The grandkids can fight over it when I am gone..... :)

I unwrapped mine too. Saved all that stuff as well. You have 2 years on me...and my kids can fight about the car too. :hysterical:

Grabber, could you run my VIN number through OASIS in order to find the build date of my 2008 GT500KR. Being in France, I do not have access to a dealer that easy ;)

VIN: 1ZVHT88S285196212

Thanks in advance.

All 2008's have the old flywheel. No need to check it. In fact all 2009 KR's have the old flywheel as well.

Even those with Ford build-dates past the 8/18/08 apparent-changeover date? Why would this be?

OK Thanks Grabber. Though, out of curiosity, I would have liked to know the date of manufacturing of my car :P

I also thought the KRs' built on/after 8/19 would be upgraded, please explain your reasoning when you get a chance, thanks.

If this is the case it just might be the thing that pushes me past the KR to the 10 Shelby.

I'm pretty sure all the 2009 KR's were built prior to 8/19/08.

Do we know roughly when the new updated input shaft was introduced, or when the new upgraded transmission was introduced?

If I get it right, this happened before the flywheel introduction, right?

BTW I notice that TSB 08-16-4 Publication Date is July 28, 2008, when the new flywheel was introduced around mid August

Yes we do know when the new tranny started going into the cars.

I researched this last year. Check it out:

http://www.teamshelby.com/forums/index.php...ic=23884&hl=

And yes you are correct about the TSB date. Ford had alot of motors already built and they had to use them up. That took a couple weeks to deplete the stock.

Thank you Grabber,

So if we sumarize the main actions took on the assembly line to correct the clutch malfunction on GT500, we have:

May 2007: new teflon lube used on input shaft to avoid seizure of clutch hub on splines

August 2007: new transmission with a revised input shaft introduced

August 2008: new stronger flywheel introduced one year later

The GT500 clutch issue to my understanding:

1 ) The original instruction from Valeo to install the clutch assembly dry on the input shaft because of the nature of metal of the hub was incorrect and has lead to seizure of many cluch hub on input shaft.

2) This led to clutch discs remaining in permanent friction when clutch pedal is depressed (hissing sound). The heat generated is cause of premature wear of clutch and subsequently cause a warping of some flywheels.

3) The original flywheel was designed with cooling holes. Unfortunately these holes makes the flywheel sensible to heat and prone to warp in trafic jams (situation when clutch is used hundreds of time in a row while engine and car speed is too low to efficiently evacuate heat building up in the clutch housing).

So my perception today is that lack of lubricant on input shaft added to a flywheel that was not tested enough in rough traffic conditions are root causes. Would you share this?

Your correct, but I need to add a few comments to make sure you totally understand. :)

You forgot to note that the new nickle hub clutch came out with the new flywheel as well. the old steel hub clutchs were rusting and that added to the clutch drag problem with the rusty non lubed tranny input shaft. Using the Teflon lube during assembly helps the new parts mate during break in and provides lubrication

The reason the new input shaft works better is because it is broached to 1/10 the average Roughness of the old input shaft (it's smoother) and the "over pin" dimension has been increased slightly for a better fit with the mating clutch hub. Too small is just as bad as too big.

The three reasons the new flywheel works better (aluminum would work best for heat transfer reasons but is brutally expensive):

1) section strength -- increased stiffness at hub via increased thickness and elimination of those useless "cooling" or "dust" holes

2) material properties -- Young's Modulus increase (roughly proportional to stiffness) of about 25%

3) heat transfer -- greater thermal mass under friction area (note the tapered back of the flywheel vs the original one), also, forged steel (4100 series) has about 20-30% better heat transfer coefficient as compared to nodular iron.

Question:

If I have a car that was built in 2/08, would I be safe to just have the clutch and flywheel replaced with an aftermarket set-up (Spec). Would I be out-of-the woods as far as the TSB is concerned. I hate to spend the money on a new car, but I don't like worrying about it.

I only have 1,650 miles on the car and am tired of worrying about this clutch TSB. In fact, I baby the car when driving in order to avoid having issues. I'd prefer to have this done prior to damaging the tranny.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

overtime
