California Migration to Terlingua

Just Tony

Recommended Posts

The California Caravan is on the road so look out Arizona and New Mexico. We had a rough start as they were doing paving right in front of the Costco entrance. Luckily, I got there earlier and started making calls to switch to Plan B. What? You didn't know about Plan B. You always have to have a Plan B. Okay, so we didn't have one either put we just started making phone calls and changed the meeting spot. Most of us ate at the In-n-Out then when Tracey Smith showed up in her fueled up 08 SGT convertible we hit the road. Pretty uneventful trip and now we are checked in at the LaQuinta in Chandler. Gotta go, they are banging on the door 'cuz everyones hungry and we are going to the Cracker Barrel next door. More details and pics (being uploaded as we speak) when I come back, as long as I don't spend too much time under the keg with the tap wide open.

Hey Tony, sounds like a good first day! Packed and ready to head out at 6 tomorrow morning to meet the group at 7 and be in San Antonio by 10 to meet up with the others for food. Don't let the tap run too long tonight, makes for some crappy cruising the next day :) cya in Alpine!

Tracey and Jenni (with help from John Keller) dragged me away from the keg before I became completely incapacitated. Thanks guys :nonono: . I'll never forget what you did for me. So now I'm back in my room (all alone, honey) and will give some details of our first day with selected pics. The whole Photobucket album can be found here and I will upload daily.

First the Roster.

The organizers: I have the Blue 40th vert and Michael McGuirk has the '06 Legend Lime Mustang GT. Our goal was to have as much fun (or more) as we had at the Birthday Bash.

IMG_2226.jpg

IMG_2228.jpg

Next we have Bill and Maria Bayes in the '07 Blue coupe with the SS hood and Jenni from the CSCF in the GT-H with the Terlingua sticker.

IMG_2227.jpg

Dictating our speed (we had to step on it to keep up with him :shift: ) is Ken Boone and his girlfriend Krystal. Inside the innocent white trailer is his Red SS'd 40th.

IMG_2229.jpg

Lastly, but not least, we get to hang with Tracey from CS Licensing. She brought a special '08 SGT; #00000000002P. The P is for prototype.

We met up with John Keller from PA in his 2008 Silver KR after taking delivery just hours before we got to the hotel. This brave man is breaking his car in on this trip. We also hooked up with Jim and Shirley Crescenti who are trailering their awesome '07 Black SS vert from NorCal. Pictures of these 2 when there is light in the morning.

So those are the players for the day. Tomorrow we add 2 more.

In the first post I mentioned a hiccup in our plan that denied us easy access to our announced meeting place. Thinking quickly, we just called everyone and said "Meet us at Sam's Club instead of Costco. It's one block closer to the freeway." Luckily they bought our lame excuse and met us at Sam's Club. Off we went. Since Michael arranged for the hotels, he led the way to our final destination of the day, Chandler, AZ. Bill provided a set of long range radios. He brought up the rear with one radio and Michael had the other radio. A beautiful but hot day awaited us. Relatively uneventful. We hit rush hour traffic in Phoenix for the last 30-45 minutes of our drive. All in all, a good first day. About 330 miles from the caravan start point but everyone put in extra miles to get to the rallying point.

Some highlights.

IMG_2235.jpg

We passed a whole lot of windmills in the Palm Springs area. Pjcobra9t7 would feel right at home here. Except for the total lack of water. :hysterical:

IMG_2241.jpg

Our only gas stop of the day was in Blythe, CA, right on the Arizona border. We stopped to take a few pics and get details on Tracey's car.

IMG_2242.jpg

IMG_2243.jpg

Three different Blue Shelbys. Tracey's special '08 SGT convertible, Bill and Maria's '07 GT500 coupe with the cool SS hood and my Blue 40th convertible.

IMG_2240.jpg

We wouldn't want to forget about Jenni's GT-H or Michael's one-of-a-kind Legend Lime Mustang GT.

IMG_2244.jpg

IMG_2250.jpg

We attracted a lot of attention as you might imagine, 5 Shelbys and (other than the 3 blue colored cars) none of them the same (yeah, I counted Michael's as a Shelby, it looks like one). This guy took pictures of every car as he drifted backwards through our line then around the back end and passed all of us on the left as he went about his business.

IMG_2248.jpg

IMG_2249.jpg

We crossed the Colorado River and entered Arizona; half way done with today's drive.

Hopefully, this video will see the light of day before the Bullrun chopper video. In the upper right of the picture, you can see our uniform of the day so we could pick out others in our group: a CS look-alike antenna ball. The LeMans stripes alone just weren't enough of a give away.

That's it for the day. Gotta get up for breakfast at the Cracker Barrel at 6:30am so we can get the rubber to the road at 8am. Another update tomorrow if John, Tracey and Jenni can get me away from the keg again. Now that I know their technique, it might be a little harder from them. And don't forget to watch the AGT show and vote for the most talented person you see (Don "Chips" Braswell, of course).

Good night.

We got in after dark last night. Between that, watching AGT and voting for Chips, and a slow internet connection, I was too tired to post. I did upload yesterday's pictures. I'll detail the day with pics after I check in at Lajitas this afternoon.

We left Chandler, AZ on time and called Todd Burgess (08 Pony) when we hit the north end of Tucson. He joined the caravan without a hitch and we got a chance to chat with him and his wife, Christine, at our first gas stop in Wilcox, AZ. Everything went smoothly until about 5 miles outside of Las Cruces, NM (our last gas/lunch stop) when the right side tire on the forward axle on Ken Boone's trailer decided it had had enough and let go. Bill, Todd and I stopped with him to survey the damage. Ken said he would limp over to a tire repair place in Las Cruces and then meet up with us at Applebee's. Luckily, our new Canadien friends, latest additions to the caravan, Don and Laura Harker had scouted out the area and found that Applebee's was just off the freeway so we agreed to eat there. We left there after Ken arrived and headed for Van Horn. We ran in to El Paso, TX rush hour traffic but regrouped by mile marker 46.

Gotta go. The group is ready to hit the road.

Yup, get on that there road. :shift:

The first group of SoCal Team Shelby members already arrived in Terlingua. The benefits of a commercial airline but then again they missed out on a Shelby caravan.

Keep the updates coming Tony :yup:

Steve

PS- If Tracy or Jenni calls back to Gardena and no one answers the phone tell them not to worry, its just that everyone is working real hard in this ghost town this week.

Before I forget what happened today, let me share it with y'all.

We left Van Horn about 8:40 and got into Alpine a little before 10:00 (don't do the math, it will only scare you) and that included a 10 minute break just outside Marfa. Some of the guys suddenly got a burst religious fervor. I can only assume this because there were several that went out into the empty prairie and stood still for a minute or two with heads bowed and hands together below their waists. I never heard an amen but eventually they tightened their belts and walked back to their cars. Nothing else exciting happened until about 15 miles from Lajitas just after we turned on to 170. The Valentine 1 suddenly gives a loud chirp and full bars and then the LEO comes over the crest of the hill just in front of me. His lights go on instantly and I immediately pulled over and waited for him, DL, registration and proof of insurance in hand. I was politely greeted by Deputy Martin Willey and reminded that the speed limit on the 170 was 50 mph and he had clocked me at 67 mph. He said that since I was from California, I would have to go before the judge immediately and pay the fine in cash. Since that would be a major hassle for me and him, he simply requested that I observe the limit henceforth. I agreed to his conditions and we parted ways. Whew! Dodged a bullet.

I'll post more about today later, if I have time. They have our days pretty packed.

First let me say that the rooms we are staying in have metal roofs, so last night the internet was ssssllllllooooooowwwww. For some reason this morning the wireless connection is flying so I am uploading pictures right now. I will see what I can upload after breakfast. But all of the pictures are going to the Photobucket album in my 1st (2nd?) post so you should be able to see them there shortly. Later, time allowing, I will post selected pics from yesterday and today. Today we have the drag races and a police escort back to Alpine for a car show then dinner. They are allowing one full hour for the escorted 100+ mile drive to Alpine. You do the math. In between is lunch at the airport which is where the drags are held. Tomorrow is the 300+ mile Bullrun with secret checkpoints.

We will try go keep y'all current on things, but as mentioned before and on another thread, the wireless connections are really spotty. Be patient. Y'all will get your fix.

Thanks for the updates T. Have a blast, be safe and DO TEAM #13 PROUD.

Close call with Smokey. He got you by waiting for your headlights and then flipping on the laser.

No sitting there with it on at night so you can detect his beam when he can wait for headlights.

We are all helpless against that move, unless we dont speed, like I said, we are all helpless against that move!

On behalf of all the "freaks", we loved the opportunity to hang with you on the trip and at the best event (so far). Oh, and the poker tournament was cool too! ^_^

I thought I was the one having all of the fun! Hanging out with the Girls from Shelby (Tracey and Jenni) was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. These young ladies are the intelligent, fun-loving people we all look for when expanding our circle of friends. I miss driving around with all of you.

It was great to see you again at LASAAC's S.M. Pier show last month, and you looked terrific as you always do! I'm glad that you had a great time in Terlingua, and I look forward to speaking with you again soon.

Carroll definately has the right person managing the Foundation on his behalf.
