V1PER
I plan on tracking my SS along with my fellow friends with their 997 GT3 RSs and the like. Thing is will I been left behind? Have any of you guys had yours out on a circuit and if so what were your findings?
John Strauss
Chances are your friends don't have any more talent then you do on track. If thats the case you will be out front just on HP alone. If you really drive it hard it will get hot. Keep a eye on the temp gauge and pay attention to loss of power after a few laps. That will be telling you its hot. If its a short track it might not be a problem. I have had heating problems my first 2 times to the track. I installed a dual pass intercooler, pluged off the Radiator by pass hose, 160' T-stat, and a 3.5 inch pulley on the blower. Tested it at Homestead but forgot my brake pads and had rear end problems. Still ran good and I was pretty happy with the temps. But Sebring and Daytona really put it to the test because your always on the thottle. Heres a couple videos of my first time to Sebring as a Super Snake. Trust me they don't have anything on you. Check out my video passing in the rain. John If you have the Ford Racing Blower, it develops more heat - like the stock unit. I have the 725hp package, changed the intercooler to a dual bypass unit, run the fan all the time, changed out the antifreeze and use Redline Water Wetter. No heating issues after that. The stock ford supercharger suffered from heat soak baddly. If you can drive it, it will :happy feet: run with anything out there. mike
V1PER
Well I have the economy model with just the 600 odd horses so I guess that means I will have issues? Irritating when you consider the price and pedigree of the car that it needs further mods to make it perform in anger. Thanks for the advice. Did I note you had problems with brakes too? Richard Saute
I've tracked the car a number of times, and the only thing holding the car back for me at this point is my lack of experience. No heat problems, plenty of braking, and yes people do pass me. At this point I'm more interested in learning the track than pushing the car to it's limits. Next year it will be interesting to see where I am with the car.

I had the same HP you have before I had it SSed. You will still be passing most everyone. I rarely was passed. If you install a 160 T-sat. and a dual pass heat exchanger you will not have any heating problems. I didn't with these mods. The brakes work fine no problems but I don't really use much brake. Trust me you still will have a handful tracking your car. I would leave the traction control on till you really get comfortable with it out of the corners. I run with it off so I can use the throttle to help steer it if need be. Its truly a driving experience. John

John The reality is that while most SS owners probably won't run their cars at a Sebring or Daytona, they should be able to do so without the fear of excessive heatsoak after just a couple of laps. John your experience was one of the first and very telling. It might be wise if SAI would consider a running change to handle the 2.8KB and TVS heat issues. After all when you compress larger volumes of air at up to 18,000 rpms(blower revolutions) you are going to create heat. I have built several KB Cobras and always upgraded cooling and the heat exchanger. Heat is every engines enemy-that's why limp mode pulls out the timing to protect the hot motor from detonation and related damage. I do not want to have to put in a larger pulley thereby reducing boost and performance. The 2.8 is rated at up to 30 lbs but that would be foolish on a stock motor. However, if we can't run reasonable boost we won't have 725 hp and truthfully can save the 4k additional cost of the KB. Of course if we cut boost too much to compensate for heat the SuperSnake won't be so super. That being said we need to consider taking the steps you did John and it may require some tuning as well. I think that Bud and KB need to be made aware that this is an issue and make a running change that addresses the problem. That being said, my hat goes off to the early SS pioneers who took early delivery and are surfacing these important issues to improve the SS program. V1PER
I should get my car early Oct......it's built and on it's way across the pond. I take it mine won't have any of these mods. What kind of cost is involved and any technical ability needed to fit?

The heat exchanger does require pulling the front bumper but it is really not that big of a job. The T-Sta is right on top and has a o-ring seal. I would replace it while you have it out. The blocking of the radiator by pass hose is just getting a pvc cap that fits snug inside the hose and just put a clamp on it to hold it in place. Cost is about 500 dollars for parts, labor?? a good shop 3 to 5 hours being careful. I wouldn't make any changes till you see if your driving will get it hot. I don't think many tracks are long enough to over heat a stock Super Snake. Good Luck Hope It Arrives Soon. John

John John, I have an 08 GT-500 headed to SAI the week of 1/5/09. I live in Davie and plan to run it at Homestead, Palm Beach International, Sebring and Daytona. I ran with PCA alot in the 80's and early 90's and never had problems w/my 911's. I am interested in mtg you and learning how to make my SS work on the track and knowing some people interested in mustangs. Pls send me some info on your club and I will contact you that way. I am in the Palm Beach area frequently. Thnx Bill

Then I went the next step and did the Heat Exchanger with Dual Pass and Dual 9" Puller Fans. For those of you that read this thread that don't know John (JAS427) and I were both fortunate enough to have Jon Lund come to Daytona this last December and datalog and tune both of our cars. JAS427 and I both know about heat soak with and without an AFCO heat exchanger. Even with an AFCO you will exceed 170 degrees downstream which is a huge timing pull while tracking. JAS427 and I have tracked and data logged countless numbers of times. The radiator and heat exchanger are the best way to combat the heat these cars make. 15 minutes into your session those 911's and Z06's will be coming back around you. Been there done that. Radiator and Heat Exchanger changed out, not anymore. My problem now is that my suspension sucks. I've got all the power I could ever want, now I need a suspension to handle it. Where's that number for Grigg's? Dactyl
