Rusty Hood Pin Cables, Again

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My original set of hood pin cables started to rust. So, I contacted SAI and they sent me out another set.

Now, after two months, this new set is also starting to rust.

The car is a DD. I live in the San Francisco bay area. So, it's not a very salty air environment like San Diego or Florida etc.

Has anyone else's second set also started to rust?

Thanks

Are the cables no longer laminated? No rust problems here in over a year.

I just sent an e-mail to Keith @ SPP Yesterday - and my 1st set of Replacement lanyards/pins are on the way.

My originals appear to be rusting like everyone's who have started to rust. Inside the little plastic piece where the lanyard connects to the spring pin. I hope that my second set doesn't do this.

I had the same thought. . . . prior to install. . . . spraying the lanyard with some sort of anti-rust coating or something like that.

But - seriously - what do I know?? We'll see what happens with my second set!

I upgraded to the billet hood pin set from Shelby Performance Parts also and the cables started rusting after a few months. I sent an e-mail to SPP and they responded immediately saying this was a “known problem” that had been resolved and they sent a new set of cables to my house via FedEx. I'll give SPP an A+ for responsiveness.

Unfortunately, these have also started to rust and look worse than the first SPP set. My car is a daily driver and I do live in Florida and it rains just about every day this time of year (no salt). I’ve had stainless braided cables on boats that would get covered in salt water and still looked perfect for years. This is just a case of poor quality material.

If anyone from SPP reads these forums could you please explain?

I just received my Shelby Billet Hood pin set from SPP yesterday. I plan on installing them tomorrow. Just for the hell of it, I took a magnet to all the parts. Everything is either Stainless steel or aluminum, EXCEPT the cables. They are definetly regular steel braided line covered in some type of vinyl. Grab a magnet and try it.

There is a stainless steel grade that is magnetic. They use it on appliances. I would highly doubt this is that grade though. Sounds as though this cable is not stainless. I have a brand new set of billet ones in the package that i got for xmas and I have avoided putting them on until I kow for a fact the problem is fixed. I am anxious to see what SAI says about this.

Yes, I am aware that some stainless steels are slightly magnetic, but you can definetly tell by the pull of the magnet that the cables are not stainless. They are regular steel or some other iron alloy covered in vinyl.

P.S. I just got finishing the Hood Pin install and lower billet grille. Pretty easy with a little patience and some tweaking.

Yes, good point.

The 300 series stanless steel is non-magnetic. The 400 series is magnetic. I believe that the hood cables are the 300 series, but I could be wrong.

My replacement lanyards that came with the billet hood pin set has begun rusting. Actually not the lanyard itself but the clip that goes over the ball on the lanyard end. I assume that's what's rusting on everyone else's lanyards. I e-mailed Keith last night. Hopefully it'll just be a matter of drilling out the stainless rivet and replacing them again.

Received e-mail from Keith today. New hood pin lanyards are on the way. Can't complain about the customer service, that's for sure.

I got my replacement cables today, can anyone tell me how to remove the cables from the frame? what tool do I use to pop the old one out? Thnx.

The cables are riveted into the top of the radiator support . To remove them you have to drill the old rivets out this is not a big deal just do not use too big of a drill bit. You will need the new correct size rivets which should be stainless steel and should be included with the new cables. You will also need a rivet tool which you can purchase from a hardware store if you dont have one already STSVT

I was at Shelby Performance Parts today to pick up a Sequential Tail Light kit and Keith came out to look at my car and the first thing he looked at was the cables. He declared them rusty and went inside and brought me a new set right there on the spot. No questions asked, and no paperwork to fill out.
