trmn8er
Wow, after reading the thread "Shelby Vs Saleen", I was pretty disappointed. I expected more from SOME GT500 owners. There was serious Saleen bashing, to the level of downright hostility. Why all the hate? I mean we all drive Mustangs right? Is it really fair to call a fellow Amercan-made Mustang a ricer car? Let me put my take on it... keep in mind I have owned 3 brand-new Cobras. A 1998 Blown Cobra, White 2001, and a modified 2003 Cobra. I also have a 2005 Saleen S281SC. Cobras are great, and the new GT500 is No exception. I would buy one, but will not pay 1 cent over MSRP. Not one. If and when they sell at MSRP, I’ll go take a look. Some of the comments on the thread cited above are pretty harsh. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Damn! Let's see; "Saleen are rip-offs", "Saleen’s look like rice burners!" are a comments that struck me. Do you really believe that? Let me try to be subjective and point out my perception. Keep in mind I like both cars, and own a Cobra: S281SC: cost 52K (approx) Arguably will out-handle the GT500 all day long, way better suspension Better brakes with 14" Stoptech (saleen) model Better interior... I mean the seats, gauges, boost pod, IMHO is really nice 300 pounds lighter (close) Cheaper than average price people are paying for GT500. How many are paying under 50K? With 475 kit (2007 cars or $900 upgrade), makes very similar power, and will probably out-run stock GT500, making 419 at the tires (average) and 300 pounds lighter. Yes, the GT with boost upgrade will make more power! WAY better Supercharger. The Saleen blower rocks. LOW boost, serious power, 2.3 liter twin-screw Yes, it has the body kit that some may dislike. I think the GT500 looks kind of plain, yet classy, and FAR prefer the Saleen look, but no bashing the GT500 (unlike so many posts on the site trashing the Saleen) GT500: costs more. ADM is a joke. Supply and demand at it's finest. I don't want the car that bad. GT500 has better internals hands down. Period. 5.4 liter motor=Badass! Shelby Name (hardly a rare car, the Saleen is WAY more limited production) More potential to build motor up. Who can argue this? I won’t even try, although Saleen Extreme, well that's another story! WAY too heavy. C’mon guys, who can rationalize this? Ford needs to put the car on a diet. Period. Cool looks. I mean I really like it, I just prefer the Saleen. Again, ADM's. What a total and complete joke. We are to blame by paying the markups! For those of you who cannot make your point without insulting your fellow Mustang owners, , myself and Saleen owners, I pity you. Take your hostility out on a Honda, but not another Mustang. Black Sunshine
Well said. Personally, I'm not crazy over the Saleen body kits, but that's my opinion. They're still awesome cars. I caved on the GT500 ADM like many other buyers. But being 32, single, no kids, and having a nice salary in a professional medical career, it was an easier decision for myself than probably many others. I'm getting what I paid for. In spite of my bachelorhood, I just didn't have the time or patience to play phone tag for days or weeks on end in search of an MSRP deal like many here. The money was worth the lack of headache and hassle that I did get from a couple local dealers. Also, I paid the ADM on a certificate to order, thus guaranteeing I could get what I wanted as far as color and options. My only beef with the GT500 so far is its weight as you mentioned. But I can live with that as it is "The Car" as I refer often to my co-workers. It is my first ever brand-spanking new vehicle purchase and I plan on having it forever until death do us part. I have not cared much for the Saleen body kits, but it is a nice performing vehicle. GT500 is a hog, and needs a diet, or the aluminum instead of iron block. That might help some on the weight balance of the car, but Ford cheaps out a lot on things like that, bean counters rule. I am with you also, will not pay one cent over MSRP. I think I will just get an '07 GT. I am close to getting one, just trying to decide on color and hard top/vertible. Later, down with the bashers.... Dropping__Chronic
Yes but in that reply people ventured their opinions. Some may be contrary to your own, or considered 'bashing', but they are valid opinions none-the-less. I personally have a heavy distaste for the Saleen as the price is just insane to get performance you could gain yourself for less money on out of a Mustang. I believe the over-inflation of price comes not from the modifications, but from the addition of far too much (for my tastes) plastic and stickers. Perhaps some labeled that as 'rice', but even if they did wasn't that kind of correct? I mean you have to admit some of the liberties Saleen takes are pretty over the top. I've seen some Saleen wings on Mustangs that just made me cry inside, then they put all kinds of goofy plastic in odd places as well and generally try and make some attention getting 'thing'. Personally if I were Saleen I'd go for the less is more approach, clean up lines on a Mustang, do subtle changes to fenders and other TASTEFUL modifications in the looks department, then have an understated 'Saleen' sticker in key places or badges. I wouldn't make some land bound batmobile hulk that just looked like it had stuff put on it just for the sake of putting stuff on it. But yes at the end of the day perhaps some of the opinions could have been voiced in a more amicable manner, but I personally have a thicker skin for criticism and think others should have that as well. If you don't like my vehicle choice, super, like I care. If I owned a Saleen it would be a personal choice of MY OWN, and it wouldn't be affected by the comments or opinions of others. Heck, my good friend considers all Mustangs white trash vehicles destined for the scrap heap. I just laugh at him and say 'Look it's not my fault you are deluded and jealous of my G-ride, some people like you are just meant to be less awesome than me' My point is, is that I don't care what he or anyone else says about my car. It's MY car, not his. So when you start a thread about Saleen's and such, it's not going to be filled with happy hugs and pats on the back regardless of what everyone else drives. Personal preference dictates opion. Snakehead
I can't argue with you at all. To each their own. My only comment is that I've heard the Saleen's don't hold their value well. I'm sure the depreciation on a new Saleen will compare favorably to a "$65k GT500", but at MSRP, my opinion is the GT500 will hold its value far better. No bashing. Just my humble opinion. There is a way to share your opinion without being hostile. I also think Saleen wings can be a bit much, and I too like the less is more approach. My car was ordered without the SC wing, and has the clean Saleen rearend with small ducktail wing for the very reason that I too like a clean look. That however does not make other Saleen drivers "Ricers". One can not argue Saleen spends big money in a wind tunnel, and at least their cars have the HP to use the aero package (to some degree) compared to a 180HP Honda with a 6 foot wing. As a matter of fact, they use the same wings on their race cars, and they have done pretty well over the years. If you want to talk price/performance, well I could take a 27K Mustang GT and for 12K, well you know. The GT500 with huge ADM is not a value (IMHO). At sticker, sure. I'd just like all us Musclecar owners to take our hostility out on something other than other Mustang owners. Well I'm off to go pick up my car from Saleen. It's a car they use for R&D and we just did the injector, air inlet, 98mm MAF, pulley upgrade to it. It's an auto (really my wife's car), but man it's a beast with this new-found power. Who knows, maybe I'll get that Shelby if/when the prices come down. Peace!

tomc37
Hi everyone I am a proud owner of a Shelby GT500. I have always wanted to own a Mustang with the name Shelby on it. I just think you should all be grateful that they brought the retro look back in 05 and we get to purchase a mustang with such a cool look to it. Weather it is a Sallen or a Rouch or a Shelby think of what we have to enjoy on those sunny summer days. Wow we are all so lucky.... Tom in Ohio I paid 27K for the car, and 12K for all the parts. If it's my opinion that the car is ugly, am I not allowed to say that? You may be right that it outhandles the GT500...that's not the most important feature to me. In addition, the S281C at my nearby Ford dealers were going for more than $52k...I guess the dealer had an ADM on those as well. I got my GT500 (not received yet) for MSRP, so there's no way I'd pay $10k more for a car I like less. I really agree with DC's thinking about the "less is more" and the way I cringe when I see these otherwise classy cars with big spoilers that seem to say "95% of my car is very classy and sweet looking, but I hung this huge spoiler on it to get attention." I just can't get into the body mods on the Saleen. So, have I "bashed" the Saleen? If so, then I guess I'll always be a basher...but actually I think I've been pretty reasonable about the comparison. The people that bug me are ones that make generic statements such as "such and such a car sucks"...tell us why you think so ...give details. Otherwise, complain away....you buy the car you want, and I'll buy mine. Dave

Thought it was really a nice looking car. Listed out at 47K. Salesman first tried to say they were going for 10K over list, but after I pointed out how silly that was, he came back later and said they would sell it for list. Point is, if you don't really have to have the shelby, there are some good mustang choices out there. I was very surprised by how good the Rousch looked in person, since the side stripe is pretty bold. For those that don't know, the 427 is for much hp the car has. I dont dislike them but there are a few featurs that bug me. No, th car doesnt suck, its a nice vehicle, although a bit spendy for my taste. E is an awesome machine! I agree, its part of the breed, we cool! Yea the way this deal with Saleen worked out, I cannot complain. They use the car, I get the work done for dirt. I just picked it up today after they installed the 475 kit, and the car made 396 SAE at the tires. It's an Auto. Do the math, 495 HP with only 6 lbs boost. It really runs great. Now all I need is hot coils, alum driveshaft, on and on and on..... ...little off topic, but I killed some time yesterday afternoon and dropped by the local ford dealer here, and they had an 07 Rousch 427R, red, sitting there. True true... I had a Roush Stage II back in the 90's. Cool car. Really, it's all about choices. I'll be the first to admit, the GT500 is one bad-ass ride. Now where's that little C6 (not Z06) running around my neighborhood now? Here Chevy Chevy... You really can't beat an E when you're considering a GT500 + ADM. The E is 400 lbs less, has more horsepower and torque, better brakes, better suspension, the list goes on. An E would murder a GT500 in every category in a competition. Highlights: Curb Weight, lb. est 3550 Weight Distribution, F/R 53/47 Horsepower 550 bhp @ 6100 RPM Torque 500 lbs-ft Torque @ 4900 RPM Saleen Series VI Integrated TwinScrew Supercharger With Two-Stage Water-To-Air Intercooler System; Cast 356-T6 aluminum alloy construction Differential Saleen Maxgrip™ Differential 4.10:1 gear ratio Braking System Saleen 15" slotted front disc brake system with Saleen 6 piston calipers and ABS Power Assisted 4-Wheel ABS Brakes Standard Saleen Premium 6-Piston Calipers Standard with 15.0 in Slotted Disc (Front) Standard 11.8 in. Slotted Disc (Rear) Standard http://saleen.com/s281_e_specs.htm It really is a hell of a package. I just hate the looks. Evil, your alright after all. Extreme ugly? We agree to disagree. The only thing I cannot stand is the extra wing Saleen puts on top of the rear deck. They have a duck-tail cap with an extra wing on top. Only on the Supercharged and Extreme. IMHO, It just is too much. I can see why so many here don't like Saleen's with all the extra stuff, but take a look at the Saleen rear without the extra wing (like mine) and they really look nice. Also, the Extreme has the carbon-fiber diffuser and chin spoiler. I like that piece... Yes, well put. Just like people who cut down guys with V-6 mustangs, hey it is still a mustang, and we are all on the same team. Do you have an R1? If so, no wonder you make such sense! I just sold my 04 R1, and bought an 06 FJR. Loved that R1! elburrito99
FYI -- for those who (like me) want a Shelby but cannot find a dealer who will sell one for less than $10k over MSRP, a new or slightly used Saleen might be an attractive option. The supercharged Saleen S281 offers: (1) about 430hp, which can be upgraded to 475hp with an $900 package from Saleen, (2) conservatively rated (MM&FF got the '05 model (rated at 400hp) to deliver 390.6hp to the rear tires) (2) 0 to 60 in about 4.2 seconds, (3) reduced weight of 3356 lbs with an improved weight distribution (53/47), (4) excellenet suspension/handling (MM&FF had it neck and neck with the C6 Vette's track time), (5) 275 tires (front and back) w/ remarkable ability to hook up the rears on hard acceleration, (6) substantially upgraded interior, (6) exotic styling (love it or hate it; and yes, you can delete the rear wing), (7) a truly limited production vehicle (Saleen made less than 250 supercharged S281s in '05). A new supercharged Saleen S281 starts at $53k (that's the '07, which is rated at 465hp). You can get an '06 (rated at 435hp) for under MSRP and maybe even 0% for 60 months. All with a full factory warranty. And if you're ordering one new and you don't want over the top body styling, Saleen will do what you want, within reason (remember, they only make a few hundred of these a year): remove the tail wing, take off stickers, add a light bar for the convertible, paint the wheels instead of chrome coating them, etc., etc., etc. After shopping for (new) Shelbys and (used) Saleens for several months, I just bought a Saleen S281 supercharged convertible on Ebay with 2,400 miles for under $50k delivered to my front door. The car is unbelievable in its power and handling. Check out Ebay -- there are usually half a dozen listings of 2006 Saleens on at any given time. I found Seleen owners selling their car after just 1 year, or less, for numerous reasons: couldn't afford it after all; upgrading to a Saleen S281 Extreme (almost 600hp), Ford GT, or Z06; or even b/c it was "too loud/too powerful" (which is why the original owner of my car unloaded his after only a few months -- and b/c his wife wanted a BMW 645 convertible instead). I realize this is a forum for Shelby GT500 enthusiasts, not Saleen fans. But we all love fast Mustangs. And for those who cannot land a Shelby right now, it might be worth looking at a Saleen. Just my $.02.

carnut
Some banks are real funny about "tuner" cars where they don't have the same issues for the GT500 because it is a factory car. They may make a buyer put down the difference between the base car the tuner was built for and the price of the car as they might consider them accessories they couldn't get their money back from in the event of a repo' Whew. Too long of a sentence Actually, Saleen is an OEM manufacturer, not a tuner car. They even build most of the Ford GT at SSV (Sallen Specialty Vehicles) in Detroit. Saleen Mustangs are sold brand new through Ford dealers, and feature full factory warranty, mostly from Ford, some parts from Saleen. Ford also finances Saleen cars just like a Mustang GT. I have heard the 0% APR on them as well. YMMV.
elburrito99
Yes very nice car anymore pictures? What kind of proud new owner wouldn't have more pictures? My Saleen is No. 1170 (I guess they serialize every Saleen made each model year). These pictures were taken at the dealer's lot before the Saleen was shipped (she's still in transit to California) --
