I am just a little worried that the economy will force Shelby into making some kind of FOCUS Shelby! Please do not do that SAI. Remember the Dodge Shelbys were a joke. SUDDEN. :rant2:

You can't be talking about the Shelby GLH. They were pretty quick for the day.

In a straight line the GLH's were almost unbeatable from the lights - good, stealth look too.

Face the facts.

They were crap.

I would love to have a high-strung Shelby Omni GLHS to add to my collection. I too don't want SAI and Ford to discontinue the high end muscle cars but having more choices, including greener, more fuel efficient models, is fine with me. We already have the Terilingua and 210 hp non-supercharged CS6 so what's the big deal. The more the merrier in my humble opinion.

as much as I would like to rewrite history, they were quick. One car mag did a comparison with the Dodge Shelby vs. a '66 GT-350. Pretty much a draw. Or course the '66 GT-350 does have character, whereas the Dodge is lacking in that department, IMHO

The Shelby Mustang they used was a 1965 model and this cover story titled, "Shelby GLHS Whips GT350", appeared in the April 1986 issue of Hot Rod magazine.

Some quick numbers from the GT350 vs GLHS shootout:

0 to 60

GLHS 6.7

GT350 7.0

1/4 Mile

GLHS 14.7

GT350 15.7

SkidPad

GLHS .88

GT350 .76

Lap Time

GLHS 1.43

GT350 1.45

One of the quotes Carroll Shelby made during the shootout:

"I would have been sorely disappointed if I hadn't been able to build a faster, more efficent car today. It's a sign of the times."

thanks for reference Steve, I knew i'd seen that test somewhere. BTW, I just got back from a 1500 mile trip to New Mexico in the '66 GT-350. No problems with the car and everyone loved seeing it on the open road. IT did beat my old back to a pulp however.

Guys, now lets not be elitists.....

The Dodge cars might not have been what the Ford Shelby Guys wanted, but those GLH's kicked major butt, and I am not sure any of us can talk bad about the viper.

Carroll has always made great cars, regardless of brand. The series 1 held the fastest 0-60 for years and it has the oldsmobile aurora engine. I happen to love that car.

So regardless of the brand, Carroll's cars are special. If we were to do other Fords, they would be true to the brand and fun to drive.

It's been at least 20+ years since I've taken a long distance trip in a 1960's car so a tip of the hat to you for doing it. Glad to hear your trip went smooth.

A Shelby is a Shelby. If that is what it takes for them to survive then by all means. If I have to buy an econo car as well down the line I would rather have another Shelby. And the Dodge ones were not bad performance wise for the time...now looks could be better but not many cars looked any good during that time.

I for one wouldnt mind seeing cars like a Shelby Focus. Kinda pick up where Saleen left off (or where they really didnt go I should say) :):) As long as its a quality build, thats fun to drive - shouldnt be a problem that its not a Mustang. Not EVERYONE wants a Mustang :)

Hey everybody Amy is right. I'm tired of seeing you Dodge guys put down that Series 1 car. After all its not its fault that it replaced the Chrysler cars as the red headed step child of the Shelby community.

Steve

PS- Amy, you know I have love for all the Shelby cars even if it has a GM engine ;)

My everyday driver is a 2003 SVT Focus. Really a blast to drive. I was sorry to see the SVT team drop it from their lineup. It was always at the top of any comparison of that class. It would be interesting to see how Shelby would improve on the STV version. That said, I do like the current crop of Shelby's, and think a four cylinder Shelby might be diluting the brand name.

Thanks ! But it's a "20 footer" at best. On my signature photo you can see the black gel coat on the fiberglass hood showing thru. The passenger door has the usual rust bubble on the front corner, and of course numerous door dings and assorted scratches. Otherwise it's "perfect"

WOW, the ignorance of this statement astounds me. I've got a couple of little 160ci Turbos that would kick some big time Mustang butt and get 30-35mpg. I've dyno'd tuned a few of them to 420+ WHP. When I opened my dyno shop I sponsored an 87 Shelby Charger 2.2l 16v Turbo who ran 8.04 at 180MPH in the qtr. mile. It will be fun to watch those of this opinion get their butts handed to them at one of the Shelby events.

You know, it used to bother me when I heard comments from folks like sudden, Blackhawkpilot, and the like. However, I've had well over 20 years to build up a good callous about what other (but not all) Shelby Ford folks thought of the Shelby Dodge cars. My Dad does it every time I see him, he's a die hard Blue Oval fan (as was I until the GLHS).

I haven't forgotten the “warm” welcome I received from the primary Shelby club around back in 1989 when I drove my GLHS to one of their shows in the Dallas area. They were as happy to see that car as they were a flock of pigeons with gastroenteritis.

I think its great the Carroll has worked with all the American auto builders. I just hope he continues to do so, I don't know if I'm ready to see an “import” Shelby, unless it has a red, white and blue transplant like the Cobra's... :yup:

It doesn't bother me that this type of mentality is still around, as these are the folks that have to swallow their pride under 15 to 20 lbs (or more) of boost when they show up at the track. Nothing like getting passed on the outside of a turn by a Omni, or seeing the tail lights merge on a Charger in the ¼ . Who else are we gonna have a laugh at their expense during a event...Since you guy's are in CA, you may wanna watch out for few Shelby Dodge guys / gals out there who've done 16V conversions. Your stock GT500 will get a workout and you an education as to what these cars can do.

As for a Shelby “econo” car, I'd love to see another one. Now that most of the big three can and have produced DOHC fours with variable cam timing, and now that direct combustion chamber injection is around, why not make a turbo four that puts out 240+ HP. I'd love to see a front mounted engine, rear transaxle, 2800 # car, sedan, coupe, or wagon.

If it's a Shelby, I'd drive it. I think if SAI chooses to continue to produce vehicles, they may have no option. Most of us older folks have seen this before, gas prices will begin to “thin the herd” of high HP V8 cars. You may not like it (I know I don't), but I feel it's coming. Who knows, maybe with the current fuel issues, our Shelby Dodges may finally get the attention from the media I feel they've always deserved.

Ol' Shelby helped us through the first automotive dark ages, maybe he'll do it again if they come around again (I bring the spare batteries for the flashlight).

Hi Dan. Glad to see you posting.

It's been my experience that most of the fun poked at the Shelby Dodge cars has been in jest and not really mean spirited. Sure there are a few haters out there but I'd love for them to tell Carroll that. They may just get challenged by an 85 year old man in a sh!t box. :hysterical:

The best part of Team Shelby is that all Shelby's are included under one united club banner. Its just icing on the cake that this club was started by Carroll Shelby.

Who knows, maybe with the current fuel issues, our Shelby Dodges may finally get the attention from the media I feel they've always deserved.

You know just the other day when reports of used Geo Metros selling for more than their new price got me thinking that perhaps the Shelby Dodges time has come. Who knew it would take $5 a gallon gasoline to do it but maybe thats what it takes.

AS LONG AS IT HAS STYLE AND FUN TO DRIVE AND AMERICAN WITH SHELBY NAME ON IT WOULD EARN MY RESPECT. I REMENBER THE DAY I SAID I WOULD NEVER BUY A V-6 BUT I THINK A TERLINGUA IS IN MY FUTURE.

I DISPLAYED MY CAR THIS WEEKEND AT A CAR SHOW. ALL SHOW CARS HAD TO BE OLDER THAN 1973. I WAS THERE WITH MY SHELBY GT/SC TO IN CONJUCTION WITH CSCF AND EVERYONE LOVE THE CAR AND MANY TOOK THE INFORMATION TO WIN A TERLINGUA V-6 375 HP

THIS SHOW WAS ALL BIG V-8 MUSCLECAR PEOPLE WITH ALL MAKES, DYNO TEST AND ALL. YET I NEVER HEARD ANYONE HAVE A ISSUE WITH THE TERLINGUA ONLY BEING A V-6.

I'd like to think that we can all agree that Carroll has always done the best he could with he had to work with. Was there much for performance cars in 86 when he produced the first year GLHS's? Hmm, the 5.0 Stangs made 170hp that year IIRC... TEAM SHELBY gang, as in ALL SHELBY cars.

PS Sudden, are you in the south part of the state? Great show in Irvine every Saturday called Cars and Coffee, I'll bring my 87 GLHS like I have lots of times and you bring your fastest car. There is a looong freeway onramp that lends well to a 'Spirited accelaration run' onto the I5 south. You go ahead and go first cause its a single turn lane that becomes a two lane onramp, $500. OK with you?

:talkhand:20shelby owner, You said bring my fastest car. O.K. I will bring my 427 Cobra S/C. SUDDEN. PS. I bought a new 1987 GlHS Charger and I broke down 3 times in one year with electrical problems . Yes it was sort of fast if you didnt mind front wheel drive shafts braking all the time. In my opinion they were junk. Sorry.
