Who waxes their stripes, and with what?

So I have all the pieces and parts of keep it clean and make it sparkle kit. I'm reading the instructions on the Meguiars Gold Class Liquid was and in all caps at the end it says to keep off vinyl surfaces, and I'm pretty sure those stripes are vinyl. :banghead:

Well, curses! Not only is it going to be pretty darn challenging to have complete coverage on the car without getting any of the Meguiars on any of the stripes (this is the BIG problem), but it seems like I should be putting something on the stripes to protect them. I always did with my '78 Cobra (but I'm not sure what those stripes were made of).

So, who waxes their stripes, with what, and anybody use Meguiars that can comment the items above and any effects of getting the wax on part or all of the stripes?

Thanks all. I was hoping to was this puppy today, but I'll have to see at this point. :angry22:

Edited to add - Oh, and does what you use say anything about keeping off vinyl?

(This is actually the first time i've ever red the instructions on wax... )

Glad you asked;

I will go double check but was told it is ok;

But the products work really great on the paint and stripes, just make sure the car is free

of dirt and dust before applying...............

Thanks. Let me know what it says to keep off of. Particularly Vinyl.

I read the stripes are vinyl here, but sounds accurate.

I use Zaino car products. I use it on the entire car, inluding the stripes. No problems. I highly recommend this product. The car has that wet high gloss look that you can't get from the off the shelf products.

OK I just looked at the two product labels and the Quick Detailey has no mention of vinyl.

But the Quick Wax says "Do not apply to cloth or vinyl tops".

Not sure that would include a smooth surface such as vinyl stripes but

a rough surface such as a vinyl top would trap the product in the lower

valleys of the material and create a white residue.......

I will try to find out more from Maguires web site but so far I am really happy

with the results from these two products.........

Turtle Wax Ice can be used on stripes and all other vinyl (plastic) parts like the back of the mirrors.

I tried thre Turtle Wax Ice but did not like the oil content and had to work

really hard to wipe the product from the paint surface.........

I use the Zaino products as well - on the painted surfaces and the vinyl stripes. I asked the folks at Zaino and they recommended using their Z2 & Z5 polishes on the stripes. Just keep it off the textured plastic (at the base of the windows, etc.). I like the results but find that Z2 & Z5 leaves oily smudges if you don't buff it in enough - but IMO any type of wax/polish will do the same. I finish off with Z6 detailing spray and it smooths out all the smudges and leaves a nice looking uniform finish.

Skiph, That warning applies to cloth or vinyl tops, it won't harm your stripes. You can confirm that at Maguiar's website or by calling them on Monday. Although I use Smart Wax, I use Maguiars Quick detailer on the car and stripes, and have no issue doing so.

Just make sure that whatever wax you use has a element of UV protection added in order to protect the stripes from UV damage. Smart Wax has a UV protection of 40. I don't know if Maguiar's or the others mentioned have UV protection, but if they don't, I recommend that you also use a protectant like Aerospace Protectant 303 or Plexus. Both products have websites that you can get more information if you like.

I applied ICE liquid polish on my wife's van yesterday and encountered the same issues after buffing it off. So I used some Zaino Z6 detailing spray and buffed with a microfiber towel, which resulted in a nice uniform shine. Any good detailing spray should work as well.

I use the Ice paste so maybe that's why I don't have that issue.

Thanks everybody.

Yup. I saw the number on Meguiar's box and plan on calling them Monday.

And I can TOTALLY understand not putting this on a vinyl top or something like that. I thinking that is what they are referring to. But to say I am hyper careful about my Shelby is an understatement.

Cool. But I'll keep checking today for anybody that uses Meguiar's Gold Class too, as the day is soooo perfect for a nice waxing

Just make sure your in the shade;

Dont let the car get hot when waxing...........

Oh yea. I'm pretty religious about that. Do the wash/wax back-2-back as well.

Got lots of shade around my place, and it's not supposed to be to hot today, we'll see about the rest of this week.

Buttery Wax from Adam's Polishes works amazing, and comes off extremely easy. I personally do a coat of ICE first over everything, the stripes, paint, headlights, taillights, plastic, ect. Then, I go over all the paint and stripes with a second coat of Buttery Wax and it gives it some real depth and deep color. Both are safe on vinyl.

I use the liquid Ice on mine. The trick is...not to use to much and to have 2 towells on hand for buffing. Pre buff with one towell, and then go over it with a second towell.

Any engine cleaners that are safe pollen season is bad here and got my engine dirty...its darn every where you go.

Try Adam's All Purpose Cleaner, works great for cutting grime and such off the engine, I used this to clean up my girlfriends Tacoma last weekend. Quick detailer works well too if the engine is clean and just has the pollen on it.

+1 - used the Ice paste and found it to be VERY time consuming to get off, won't use again. The liquid is VERY easy with the (2) towel method.

Here's a detailer's trick that you all might want to try... spray the car down with cool water (just water) after you're done waxing and then chamois it off. The cool water "sets" the wax into the paint and results in a super high gloss finish. It's a little more work, but the results are worth it.

Griots best of show wax.

Griot's Garage detail products are some of the highest quality products I've ever used to detail any vehicle. Meguire's, Mother's, and Eagle One all make great products for everyday use vehicles, but if there are those out there that want to try products that are hand mixed and specially made when ordered, then check them out on web.

I used Griot's Garage paint cleaning clay and "Best of Show" wax three weeks after receiving my GT500. The car looked great to begin with, but the added time of cleaning the clearcoat with the clay bar and glazing it with the carnuba blend wax left the paint glass smooth with dripping-wet appeal.

The cost of the products are not K-Mart cheap, but are great for those special rides, GT500 or otherwise!

OK. I'm sold Zaino must be "IT" hands down. But there a BUNCH of products available. I have a good car wash, leather conditioner & vinyl/rubber cleaner and conditioner already. So, for the waxing parts, for all the Zaino experienced folk out there, which one(s) for waxing - http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/mercha...gory_Code=Zaino

If you have any swirls of micro scratches, start with the Z-5. Then follow up with Z-2, and finish with Z-6. I also like to add a coat of Z-8, but that's not absolutely necessary.

This stuff is expensive, but it lasts a long time. About 3/4 oz of Z-2 covers the whole car.

For my detailing process I now use a combo of old & new technology. Griot's for Old tech & Menzerna for new: Ice was fine but did not give the results. But I was a Zaino guy and switched to Menzerna. Frankly, Menzerna's technology is more advanced and anyone who has tried Zaino owes it to themslves to try it. Most important item is not your product but your towels. Do everything by hand then when Ready purchase the Griot's Orbital Buffer.

Steps

1. Griot's Garage Paint Prep then Rinse To Strip old wax & silicone (I dont have any of that)

2. Wash (two Bucket Method)(pressure washer)& Rinse & dry (leaf Blower) then towel

3. Griot's Clay Bar & Speed Shine

4. Rinse & dry

5. Menzerna Polish 2

6. Menzerna Glaze

7. Menzerna Full Molecular Jacket

8. Pinnacle Souvran Carnuba 2 apllications

It is 5 hours from Start to finish & your car's stripes will be perfect and I mean perfect. It is really it is superior to Zaino for my needs. Enjoy!!!!!

You'll need the Z6 detail spray - does a good job getting rid of the smears and smudges left behind after buffing off the polish, especially on dark paint. I agree that Zaino's finish is very durable.
