Where is your car the dirtiest after a ride?

Recommended Posts

Ok,

It's a silly question but it seems that after a ride, the top of the rear bumper and the back of the trunk seems to accumulate the most amount of dirt than anywhere else on the car? Is it just me or does anyone notice this? And why there? Is there no air movement there? Yeah, it's been a slow day

Yep, rear bumper and back of trunk. You have lots of company. :)

The "flanks" just aft of the rear wheels where the side marker lamps are, the entire rear bumper cover, and the wheels before the Shelby/Baer brakes were installed on the car.

Same as above, but also between the rear wheel wells and the rear bumper. It appears that lots of air / dirt must swirl behind the Mustang body, causing the rear bumper / rear of trunk dirt build-up. I wonder if guys with some types of spoilers have less of this? That would be an interesting way to test spoiler effectiveness, i.e., if there is less dirt on the rear under the same conditions it would indicate the the airflow is smoother over the rear of the car....sorry, I shouldn't be thinking out loud like that.

The areas that are gathering dirt make me think Ford did a great job on the aerodynamics. For dirt to settle-out there can't be much turbulence and that's exactly what you want to reduce drag and produce stable aerodymanics. ...just a thought.

I'm sure Meguiars has some leather/crap product that would help with that :fan:

Adult diapers might be a better alternative - you know, prevent the mess to begin with.

That's a thought. Wonder what the regular GT gets with the pedestal type spoiler, and the V6 / KR spoiler will do once they hit the streets.

4 spots on my Vista Blue shelby collect dirt. Getting into the car, i get dust on the drivers side rocker panel. Of course as soon as i start it, the condensation from the exhaust spews all over the rear bumper and trunk lid. Then as i accelerate, i get bugs and debris all over the front bumper and hood lip. Then when i brake down at the corner of my block, i get brake dust all over the rims.

Excellent point but I am sure Motor Trend wouldn't see it that way. :banghead:

In relation to spoiler/no spoiler, my current car, 2000 GT (my 500 has a est. delivery date of 6/9!) I have had since new, I removed the spoiler (and rear badges) a few years back and noticed a signifigant drop in dust accumilating on the bumper, it is still the "dust magnent" of the car but not as bad as with the spoiler.

Rear bumper attracts most of the dirt - it shows up real good on Vista Blue too. Seems to have improved after first 1000 miles. And then all over the wheels too - very noticable after a few outings.

That's 700 posts!

The top of the rear bumper, and the front wheels.

all the usual spots mentioned but the area I hate the worst if the grill. How the heck are you supposed to get and keep it clean. I love the look, hate the work. Just large enough holes to collect everything and small enough so even a finger does not fit... arg!

+1!

They probably tested this in a brake dust tunnel. ;)
