Rim Job

Grabber

Recommended Posts

My front rims have a slight ring of rust around the rotor housing right where the rim makes contact. I don't like the look, so today I did some detailing. This job took about 2 hours.

My floor jack would not fit under the front of the car, so I used my pallet jack with some wood blocks. It worked great (Rated for 5000 Pounds).

This is the rust that I am talking about.

So I took the tires off, and cleaned the entire inside of the wheel well and then used a scuff pad on the surface rust on the rotor housing. After removing the surface rust, I applied some black brake caliper paint to the rusted area. I simply cut it in with a small art brush (2 coats). It cleaned that ring up nicely.

I cleaned the inside of the rims while I had the tires off.

I then put the front tires back on. 100 Pounds of Torque is required. I am happy with the detailed clean look, with no RUST.

It was then time to do the rear rims. There was no RUST ring to prep and paint so it went faster. My floor jack worked too.

Of course I cleaned up the inside of the wheel well so you could eat off of it.

Then all I had to do was put the rear tires back on.

I detailed the rest of the car yesterday, so now with the rims completed, I am done....untill the brake dust builds up again. Here's the finished look.

Rob,

If & when you switch to the Porterfield pads, they provide an aluminum oxide spray, and a prewash soap, that eliminates this issue all together....it leave a consistant silver finish on all areas where the brake pads do not contact....Looks really good silver finish on the vented outer hoods of the rotors....

When these pads wear out I will be doing that. It could be a while.

I think you need the stillen drilled rotors that are zinc plated to get rid of the rust on outside rim of the rotor too......The surface rust would be gone if you DROVE the car a bit more.....;-)

Looks good Grabber, thanks for the detailed post with photos.

Did you apply wax or ice to the inside of the rims? It does help when cleaning the loose dust off with a hose.

Your pics also show the installation clips on the rotors that cause people with aftermarket rims such difficulty. It's the first time I've seen them.

Does the pallet jack seem to be a better device than the floor jack?

:redcard: 15 Yard Penalty for misleading post title

Nice work, I'm thinking about doing the same now that I've got my lift back under my control

Yeah that post title could have taken us in a very different direction :hysterical:

Grabber, the title screwed me up....lol

Anyway, back on topic. What did you use to clean the back sides of the rims with and the wheel well housing?

I used Ice car wash soap in a bucket with a rag and a brush on the rims. Then a dry old towell. On the wheel wells I used some spray simple green and a damp rag. The wells were not that dirty.

This is the cleanest my car has ever been. I had yesterday off and my kid was at school and my wife was at Taekwondo practice. The weather was crappy, so I figured I would do some detailing on my car. I actually enjoy detailing my car. I turn on some tunes and relax while I work on it.

Grabber,

Why the Intel banner on the wall? Just wondering. I worked for Intel from 1978 until I retired in 1998. At Fab 3 in Livermore then in Folsom.

FIA Mike

It got thrown away during the logo change, and I dug it out of the dumpster.
