Track Paint Protection?

Recommended Posts

When I was at Watkins Glen last year there was a guy selling something called "race tape" made just for this. It is about as wide as duct tape so you get better coverage than the skinny painters tape but it still comes off easily. I would not put it on the stripes just to be safe.

I am heading to the Glen again in June so I will be getting some. It comes in different colors. Here is a link to someone that sells it.

+1 on Blue 3M painters tape. It works great. It is also available in different widths. I use the 2" wide stuff. BTW -- the best part of that track day was getting a wave by from the red Corvette in the attached pic. He just couldn't lose me out on the track :superhero:

3m Blue. So has anyone ever seen the 6 inch wide version? I have some in my garage I think it came from the Boeing corporations surplus store. Looks trippy. Mine is pretty old to put on my SGT and i would like some more.

I tagged a cone at autocross real good on the front chin. Meguiars pure polish took it right off completely. I have alot of Meguiars wax on car as well.

What do you get at the track? Tire chunks?

What do you guys use when you run your cars on the track for paint protection?

Thanks

Adam

If you want permanent protection, 3M makes a product called "Supershield". It's a clear film (like window tint) that you apply to any areas of the car prone to stone chipping. There is a dealer in our complex we've partnered with who installs it (he gets all the latest exotics too.... he already had a Bugatti Veyron in there). They guarantee that stones will not penetrate to the paint. This way there's no need for taping and frankly, down here in Southeast Florida in the summertime, you would have a heck of a time getting the blue tape off after it had a day to bake on there. You might want to see if you have a dealer in your area. That's what's going on my car.

I have seen a few cars with the clear film. I may go that route in the future, but I do not have any time to get the stuff installed this next week prior to Tulsa.

Covered the lights to protect the lens. It does not take much to crack or shatter the lens. Then your out $250 per light to replace. You are correct a lot more damage could be done but none on this day. I had more damage from the drive from Vegas to LA and LA to Vegas with small rocks on the windshield.

I use 3M blue also. Baked in the Hot sun of Vegas for the entire day and came right off.

Roger,

And, yes, I am smiling as I write this, but what "baking in the sun" happened in mid-January in Las Vegas? It never even got into the 70's while we were there. I know that was not "winter" by Rhode Island standards and, maybe for you that was baking in the sun, but for us southwesterners, baking in the sun only kicks in when the temperature is above 100 degrees. :D

I think if you're going to do the tape, it should be attractive and of similar color....

Well unfortunatly I will be using blue tape which will stand out like a sore thumb. Maybe I will cover the entire car with the blue tape, minus the stripes, and pretend to have an 08 SGT for a day... Just a thought!

I will prob pick some up this weekend if any vendors are selling it at Mid America. I wasn't able to find any local and didn't want to take the chance of ordering online and not arriving thru the mail in time for mid america. So for nowthe blue tape will do the trick..
