DTE warning. What is this?

Recommended Posts

I was driving my 07 SGT tonight and with no warning or without me doing anything stupid my fuel gage dropped to empty right away and a DTE message flashed on the display. A moment or two later the fuel returned to normal and there was no further issue. Anyone know much about this and do I need to have it looked at right away? Any help or shared experience would be much appreciated.

This error is usually associated with the fuel tank sending unit that determines the fuel level using the in-tank fuel pump's foam float. The float is on an arm which is attached to the fuel level indiactor sending unit. It's a fairly delicate assembly and if the float touches something (like the crossover tube) you can get an error. It may have just been a one time thing and you don't need to worry about it.

Do you have a stock SGT? How much fuel was it reading in the tank before it happened?

I had this problem for a while after modifiying the fuel pump for the supercharger installation. It's a tight fit for the pump/float assembly in the tank and the float was sometimes rubbing against the crossover tube. The problem went away when I switched (for other reasons) to the GT 500 dual fuel pump.

There is a Technical Service Bulliten (see attachement) related to ERRATIC FUEL GAUGE indications. The TSB says it may be from sulfur in the fuel.

If it doesn't happen again then I would not worry about it...

If it continues to happen I would ask the dealer to put in a new stock fuel pump, sending unit, float.

thanks for the info guys. I am going to keep a close eye on it to see if it does it again. My sgt is stock and I have about 9000 miles under my belt with no issues so far (except a less than perfect hood scoop). I always use the recommend 91 octane fuel and I have only ever used chevron gas here in Utah. I had almost a full tank when I was pulling out of a store onto the street. I was at a little of a decline and the sgt was at an extreme angle to avoid scraping the front fascia. Sounds like it was a temp float issue like you guys said.

An interesting side note...those folks with the "My Color" dash lights option...when the gas gets down to less than a gallon left in the tank, in addition to the low fuel light that should already be on earlier, the background of the fuel gauge (only) turns cherry red in color and stays that way until there is more fuel put into the car. The other gauges stay to their set color.

That's interesting. I had no idea. Obviously you've observed this. Just curious, how accurate was the gauge. Were you actually within a gallon of empty when you filled up?

That is interesting. I ran mine down to 8 Miles DTE once (on a lonely highway in Texas - not intentionally) and didn't see this. Is this on the My Color or the Ambient Light. Also, it was during the day, so I didn't have the lights on.

Yes I had a 2006 Mustang GT with the My Color option and I had to drain the tank out once and this occurred much to my surprise. I actually was within a gallon of empty per my Dashhawk computer which provides actual percentage left in tank read directly from the car's ECU.
