whazen1
Has anybody had this problem? My fuel gauge showed a bit more than a 1/4 tank left. I filled it up and it took just a bit over 6 gallons. I even topped it off until a little bit came out of the filler neck. When I started the drive home, my guage showed 3/4 full. I hate to take it to the dealer but will if I need to. I will get the recall on the air bag done at the same time. Any suggestions?

I drove it until it was down to 1/4 tank again , filled it up and it was fine. There is a couple threads on this, it has to do with the vent. it only happend once, it has been fine ever since. Run this tank through and try again, before you take it in for service.
owenkelley
The problem I have is that it takes about ten minutes for my guage to show the tank is full after I fill it. I drive off, look down and it shows half a tank, I loook down a few minutes later and it's at 3/4, a little later it shows full. Just a very slow reaction time I guess. Owen, you have a bad sending unit. I would recommend that you have it replaced before it goes out completely. Thanks guys. I will give it some time and see what happens. I appreciate your comments. Whazen, Super Snake's diagonsis is correct, however it might take more than once or twice before the float arm in the tank starts behaving (moving) correctly. As stated, run the fuel down below a half tank before you fill up and that should resolve the problem. And try to make a habit of letting the tank drop below half all the time because the float will start to stick again if you don't. I used to top off above a half tank when I first got my car, and I had nothing but trouble with my float sticking before I stopped doing that. whazen1
Son of GT, Thanks for the reply. You are quite correct in that I almost never let the tank get to a quarter or less. I always seem to top it off. I will let this tank get low before filling up again. Hopefully this will fix my problem.

Ford says it is caused by too much sulpher content in the fuel and to use Techroline to fix. This repairs only about half of the sender failures. Have the senders replaced and you will be fine... Are you leaving the engine running while filling up? I don't know why; but on my Merc Marauder I found that when filling up with the engine running, it would take forever for the gauge to register full. Made me get in the habit of shutting it off while filling it up. Always goes to full when I start it back up.
whazen1
Leroy, I think you are correct. I have owned a bunch of vechicles and have never had this problem. With only 1100 miles on my car, I am not about to add some kind of additive. I think that I will use this tank of gas up and get it done under warranty. The reason I should use up the gas is that I think they have to drop the tank to fix the float just in case that is what they want to check out and I don't want them to contaminate my fuel. I just hate the idea of taking my car back to the dealer. I doesn't even have a hair line scratch on it and as you probably know, it will when they get done. Anyway, thanks for the reply. Wayne It would be a good idea to run it down to a 1/4 tank or less before you have them work on it. It does not require to lower the tank as there are 2 access area's under the rear seat. Less stuff for them to move out of the way... Good luck Leroy
whazen1
Thanks Leroy. I will give them a call and make an appointment. That way they can fix the air bag recall at the same time. Wayne
whazen1
BCPD199, Thanks for the reply. No, I do not leave the engine running when I fill up. It is very dangerous and illegal in Florida. Appreciate the reply anyway. Wayne
