skiph
I'm in the final changes of my quest to build a spare tire that will fit on the front and the back. Based on what I was told by the dealer, the front tire will fit on the back, but the back will not fit on the front. Just wanted to confirm if this is true, or if it is the reverse. That's item#1 Item#2 - I'd also like to understand why. Is it the tires rear=(P285/40R18), front=(P255/45/R18) that makes the difference, or is there something else that causes the inability? I'm asking because the rims look exactly the same. I was going to get the factory rim - http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/product_...ts_id=613cPath= But, that one is out-of-stock. So, I was going to order the black version - http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/product_...d=649cPath=2_24 Just wanted to make sure, sure, sure that ordering the black rim would be fine for both front and back so long as I put the right tire on it (I.E.-The front one I think?) or whatever else really makes the difference. Not trying to look really inept, just would prefer to be very, very sure before spending hundreds of dollars. Thanks everybody!

CRQuarto
I thought it had something to do with the larger brake calipers in the front?
68fastback
The rear wheels are also wider (10.5" vs 9" in front) and the offsets may be different as well -- not just a different tire. <edit:> Owners manual says all four are 18 x 9.5 -- I'm surprised -Dan

All 4 of my stock GT500 rims are 18 inch x 9.5 inch. (all 4 identical) Did I get the wrong rear rims.??? What size does everyone else have??? Yup. The dealer confirmed that the rims/wheels are all the same. And, of course, the tire specs are different. So, logic is telling me that the 1.2 inches wider tires on the back, are what make them not fit on the front due to the need for them to clear the wheel-wells when making a tight turn? So, buy the rims, then tire with the specs of the front and it should fit on front or back in a flat tire situation, correct? All in favor (before I plunk down a nice chunk of change)..? Does seem strange tho to mount a tire more than 1" wider oin the same size rim, but that's what the book says. I'll edit my earlier post... Dan Thanks Dan, It is strange and I always wondered why they used the same rim with 2 different tires. It's probably a cost thing. Alan
68fastback
Yeah ...or possibly the wheel contract was already baked when CS thought wider rear skins were more appropriate
Pig
You should be able to use a 255/45 as a spare on any of the 4 tires. The only problem you might run into is the tire pressure monitor. But you can easily reprogram the system with a little tool for about $15. Takes about 5 minutes I think, haven't done it myself but I have the tool in my glovebox if I need it. Just make sure you get a sensor/sending unit mounted to the spare. Heres some info on the tool...

So sounds like the tire pressure monitor system might think I have a flat if I just slap on the spare tire that does not have the sensor inside the spare without this eh? Cool. So, with the tool, probably best if I order a sensor to be mounted on the rim of the spare. The tool is 204-363, correct? Is the actual sendor that mounts to the rim have a part number that is orderable there as well? Thanks

LuckySnake
Just curious if anyone has actually tried to put a spare in the trunk ...does it fit? The front wheel assy will not fit in the spare wheel well, but sure would fit in the trunk no problem. If I were to take the car on any kind of real road trip, a spare and jack would be in the back. IMO, there is not a real need for the sensor on your spare, if anything, when reseting the tire light you will be reminded your running on a spare. We have seen at least one GT500 that was released from the factory with a front tire mounted on the rear, he drove around without even noticing until he posted pix of his car here. If I were on a road trip and had a flat, sure would rather run a spare than be stranded in Podunk. The difference in tire size between front and rear will not harm your car's differential for temporary usage.
68fastback
Good to know! I thought it might be hard to stuff in given the high rear deck and realtively short length. -Dan

Here's a pic of my coupe, but it will also fit in a vert. Also agree that the sensor is not important as I use this tire as a spare/non-permanent fix, so who cares if the sensor's acting up. Mine's in the trunk (with jack) only when I'm going on a longer ride; otherwise it stays in the garage where I can easily retrieve it need be. I will never use the fix-a-flat tool as this will ruin the tire. Besides, with the full spare, I wouldn't have to worry about speed or distance issues. It will fit in a convertible but I found that I had to remove the trunk liner to get the wheel in.
