CAI Upgrade

Looking at a CAI upgrade to my GT500. My question is: What increase in horsepower can be expected while running 91 octane fuel? I've seen claims of 40 to 100 hp increases, but not tied to octane rating. Does the FRPP sytem (40 hp) leave it at 91? Do the C & L and JLT systems require a fuel change?

Hi, Ron and welcome to the site!

All of those CAIs (including the FRP) can support way more than the 40HP of the FRP tune. If you call Evolution (Fred Cook) or JLT (Jay Tucker, who makes the JLT CAI), they both sell Evo-developed tunes for the JLT CAI that will give you +/- 85 HP at the wheels. The FRP CAI is a perfectly good intake too, but FRP's tune is just very conservative (and they package a "pro-cal tool" instead of the fully-functional tuner box (SCT X2 or X3, etc) you'd get from Evo or JLT. Evo could likely get you similar HP as the JLT from the FRP CAI, but I think you'd have to get a custom tune and buy a real tuner anyway, so might not be worth it. Check with Fred -- possibly they have developed a tune for the FRP CAI -- dunno, but Fred definately can give you a proven 91-octane tune for the JLT.

Just a thought ...as some folks upgrade to the Eaton TVS S/C (which is packaged with the FRP CAI), they are selling their JLT CAIs because Evolution has 'stage' kits for the FRP TVS+CAI package. So you may be able to pick up a nice used JLT CAI with a real tuner and Evo tune at a good price. No problem buying/reusing the JLT/Evo CAI/tune as long as who sells it to you swapped back their stock tune before installing the TVS+FRP package (or whatever replaced their JLT) -- which is what should always be done anyway).

Check out Evolution (evoperform.com) and/or JLT (jlttruecoldair.com) -- there are cartainly other CAIs, tuner boxes and tuners around, both Fred and Jay are site vendors that support this site and have helped and/or supplied literally hundreds of folks in here.

Good luck what ever you decide!

Dan

someone had posted this specs 2008 SVT M9603-SVT07 133MM COLD AIR KIT

When installed by a dealer the warranty is 3yrs/36k miles, if the vehicle has less than 1000 miles. If over the 1000 miles warranty is 1yr/12k miles. The dealer must register your part with Ford Racing.

I asked my dealer he quoted me $1350. is it me or is that out of wack.

apparently they would have to buy a tool, I am assuming its the tuner, and I think they want me to pay for all of it.

just wanted some of the members opinion.

Thanks. :finger::finger:

Sounds pretty steep, imo. Evolution Performance (stie vendor) sells the whole FRP kit for $725 here... that includes the CAI, mounting bracket, 113 mm Mass Air Meter, Pro-cal tool and Ford Racing Oil Filter ...looks like you can install yourself and save $625.

For the $625 you save you can get an Evo tune and a real tuner (SCT) and probably pick up well more than twice the 40HP. Maybe have enough left over (dunno) for a pulley and another +/-80HP or so? If you call Fred he can tell you what tune/kit variations are available. :happy feet: ...just some thoughts ;)

I guess my main concern is the warranty, but I also want the ss package which my get to me by next year, which would void my warranty anyway

$1350 is way too much to pay for parts and installation. You should be able to do the install yourself.

I am not sure EVO offers a tune designed for the FRPP CAI. VMP tuning however does:

I plan to get the FRPP CAI in a few months and perhaps upgrade to a VMP tune later.

I believe the Pro-Cal tune is CARB legal in 50 states (E.O. #D-308-12); don't know how important that is in your state of California.

The FRPP CAI (M-9603-SVT07) is the only kit that is CARB exempt in all 50 States (at this time anyway). The CARB number I've got is different though, it is EO# D-418-9.

The FRPP CAI is $699.95 from Blue Oval Industries and I had my dealer install it for warranty reasons who charged me $150. It is an easy install and tune if you don't care about the warranty. I plan on buying a different tune when my warranty is expired.

I believe the warranty applies just to the CAI parts and tuner - not much that can go wrong IMO. For $150, it may be worth having the dealer install, but for any more, I'd do it myself - it looks pretty simple.

That FRP filter is really a high quality filter -- costs more but worth it, imo. A lot heavier than the standard 820S(?) Motorcraft filter, flows more, and MUCH stronger (can sustain racing operating pressures, etc) -- it's a genuine racing oil filter and also uses a silicone drainback valve (like the stock piece) for quick pressurization and long life. For street use the Motorcraft filter is probably fine, but for high-rpm/racing use, the FRP filter is superior, imo.
