Installed billet lower grill

Recommended Posts

I installed the billet lower grill (black) this weekend and just started by installing the two on top like the instructions (these holes are predrilled in the grill). It's tricky figuring a way to mark the holes in the bumper for drilling but I did it by installing the grill from the inside, then using sheet rock screws with a screw dirver to screw thru the predrilled holes from the inside thru the plastic bumper to just make a mark on the outside, then I drilled the holes from the outside and installed the rivets.

However, the grill is really not secured with two rivets on the top. So you then need to use a tie wrap, etc. thru the grill to hold on to it while you drill two more holes on the bottom from the outside thru the bumper and the grill. These will have to be at an angle to allow the drill and rivet tool clearance, so the centerlines of these two holes won't be perpendicular to the surface of the bumper. They need to be tilted upwards to allow room for the rivet tool.

4 rivets work well!

Why not go ahead and make it 8? After you get the 4 rivets in then go ahead and drill one more hole next to each one to be sure. Since the holes are behind that pop off piece it can't be seen and will make it even more secure. Might be overkill but if one of those rivets come out going 100mph on the freeway, it won't be hard for the other 3 to work their way out.

Yea, I agree the grille needs 4 rivets for the best mounting. I just finished mounting mine tonight and it is much more secure with four rivets. I started with the two but the bottom just flaps around. The extra 2 rivets takes care of that problem. Mine is also black and looks like it always belonged there.

I think I may have overkilled mine. Installed last Saturday using 4 # 8 SS screws with washers and lock nuts. At least it will be an easy removal when the brake duct fog light mod is finally available.
