Staff
2009 Shelby GT500KR Gets The Green Light For Production Team Shelby - To compliment the one-thousand 2008 40th-Anniversary Edition Shelby GT500KR “King of the Road” Mustangs, Ford and Shelby Automobiles announce that an additional 746 units will be built for the 2009 model year to help meet worldwide demand of the supercar. Of that total, 571 units will be available for U.S. customers thus equaling the 1,571-unit production run of the original Shelby GT500KR. The remainder of the units will be for countries that did not receive 2008 models, including Canada. “The response to this car has been overwhelming, so I’m glad we can share it with more Mustang enthusiasts,” said Carroll Shelby. “This car is really special to me and demonstrates that when Shelby Automobiles gets together with Ford SVT and Ford Racing, we can deliver a Mustang that will compete with the best in the world.” Like the 40th-Anniversary limited edition, the 2009 Shelby GT500KR will feature a 540-hp 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack, 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, short-throw shifter, and unique suspension tuning. Exterior design draws inspiration from the classic Shelby KR Mustangs and features unique carbon composite hood, wheels, and unique striping. The unique 40th Anniversary badging will only be featured on the 2008 special edition. The Shelby GT500KR or “King of the Road” Mustang is the fourth limited-edition Mustang that Shelby Automobiles and Ford have brought to market since resuming their collaboration in 2001. It builds on the performance and success of the 500-horsepower Shelby GT500 – the most powerful production Mustang ever. “If you drive a Shelby Mustang, you are part of something special: a 40-year history of legendary racing and street cars,” says Robert Parker, Ford Division Car marketing manager. “That’s what is driving interest in the GT500KR among enthusiasts around the world.” Delivering the “King of the Road” The 2008 Shelby GT500KR began production on Carroll Shelby’s 85th birthday on January 11 earlier this year. As production ramps up to launch, enthusiasts can expect to see the first GT500KRs arrive in dealers this spring. Each Shelby GT500KR begins life as a GT500, built at AutoAlliance International Inc., in Flat Rock, Mich. From there, the cars are shipped to the Shelby Automobile facility in Las Vegas, where a Ford Racing Performance Pack, exhaust system and short-throw shifter are installed. The GT500KR also is fitted with unique body, chassis and interior components. Every GT500KR will be hand customized and delivered to each customer in an enclosed transporter, just like the legendary Ford GT. The strong demand for the new Shelby GT500KR was recently demonstrated at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona where a one-of-a-kind version built with a glass-roof was auctioned off for charity. The GT500KR sold with a winning bid of $550,000, which went toward helping the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Joe G
Ford never said 2 years on GT500. Any dealer who tells you so is a *LIAR*. HTT of Ford said they'd "build one for every person who wants one". The *DEALERS* are the liars, not Ford. Sorry but you're wrong on that. When dealers signed up to get on the GT500 program (special fee, special tools, special training) the contract was said to be for 2007-2008 only. THAT'S why dealers told consumers that. Some dealers (Bonestar for one ) made up extra BS to try to make it seem even more exclusive (one person here was told there would be no Verts!, one was told 1,000 only etc)... that's not the same as Ford's announcement of 07 and 08 only. HTT's "build one for every person who wants one" wasn't a press release or an official document. It was him answering a question and could be taken to mean a lot of things. Do you think that if a million people wanted one then Ford would build a million GT500's??

robertlane
In 1960, the census showed the U.S. population at 179,323,175. The 2000 census shows the U.S. population at 281,421,906. That's a difference of +102,00,000 million more people. Yet, Shelby is making a few hundred more GT500KRs in 2008 than they did in 1968 and this is a problem? Sorry, but I don't see it at all. In my book, 102 million more people won't have a chance at a 2008 GT500KR than those who did in 1968.

Ford should have been straight with everyone, don't say 1,000 cars if you don't mean it, that is why everyone is upset. The GT500 is going to be mass produced and that is why the KR came into play with a quote (1,000 cars to be made). This is a joke already, they hype it out of control so people pay high adm's so they will have a true low production car and now what happens bam a second year run with more cars. Maybe in the second year they can resolve the rear end rust issue or even the wheel hop issue for the $79 k msrp. I am sure the ZR1 ( granted it is 20,000 more ) won't have rust or wheel hop and will keep true to it's promised production numbers just my .

No disrespect but different cars for different reasons. ANYONE can match the packages on thier own with aftermarket goods, however they will not be true Shelby built, thus not the same. Neal
I am really disappointed !! I was brought into the Shelby culture over the years by Die Hard ( I mean Bruce Willis Die Hard) Carrol Shelby enthusiasts. My first car was a 67 Camaro and for years I was dreaming of that 69 RS/SS Converible Pace Car, that was all I wanted until the KR showed up on the local showroom, the unique One in a Thousand. I just shivered a little inside while I tried to remain calm, cool, and uncollected. I wasn't going to pay 25000 to 50000 over MSRP but maybe I could swing MSRP, maybe they would deal...MAYBE I COULD BE ONE OF THE FEW...TO OWN NOT A JUST A FORD MUSTANG....BUT A SHELBY "KING OF THE ROAD"... only produced "ONE YEAR - 40 YEARS AGO" and only produced ONE YEAR now to commemortate it!!!! Whooaa! It Worked!!! I Did it!!! I didn't buy just a mustang....I Bought into the Legend, the History, the Man! The Teen Age Muscle Car Dream, the Mid-Life Crisis...uh-REWARD, and the Bucket List all rolled into one. I was looking at the "Mid America" web page and dreaming some more.....then I read this article and I stopped Shivering Inside..... I wonder now if I should have waited for the Camaro.....Its just another car also.
