sill plate application question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am in Iraq so I don't have the ability to take off the glove box cover to get it signed by Mr. Shelby through the Children's Foundation and don't want my wife to have to deal with such a complicated request.

I am wondering if I purchased a set of the Shelby Sill Plate inserts would one of them fit on the glove box or airbag cover and would it work or even look suitable?

- Are the dimensions of the sill plates smaller than the area on the airbag cover / glove box?

- If so, are the sill plates flat on the back so they could be affixed neatly in that area?

- Would it look professional if they were autographed by Carroll Shelby?

Thank you all.

Erich I would discourage the mounting of any type of "plate" on the air bag cover for liability reasons.

Have you thought of possibly purchasing a replacement air bag cover from the Ford dealer that you could have autographed now and wait on installing it until you get back home?

Steve,

Yes I have thought about it but have not been able to identify a part number. Some have indicated that you had to buy the whole airbag. I also wonder if the sill plate could go on the upper portion of the glove box thereby avoiding any safety concerns of interfering with the airbag. If anyone knows where I could purchase the airbag cover (mine is the IUP with woven charcoal), I would do it in a heartbeat.

Thank you,

Erich

+1

Thus far everything I have found says you need to buy the entire airbag assembly. Yeah Ford!

You could look for a wrecked car, seems to be quite a few lately, but I think the woven charcoal is even harder to find. You could go with the visor mirror like others have. Protected in a sense too. I mean what if the air bag, God forbid, ever activated. There goes your signature! Of course that might be the least of your worries in that case.

Well thats no good. Lets see if Amy can help us out. I'll post in the Ask Amy section and see if SAI can get just the covers from Ford and have them autographed by Carroll and sold thru SAI.

Ok I made the post and now its up to the members. If you would be interested in a autographed airbag cover please use the link below to let SAI know if there is a demand for something like this. No promises but the more demand there is.......... well you know.

It is only taking between 10-14 days to get the cover back. And even during that time the car is drivalbe, though I wouldnt advise driving it with a passenger. I didnt drive my car while the bag was out. Everytime I started to get upset over it I just reminded myself of those up North in the NE and Chicago who havent been able to drive their car for months or even those that have their car in storage during the winter. I say rip that thing out and ship it off. If your waiting for SAI to come up with a solution for your wanting to not have a car without an airbag just remember by the time that happens you may not be able to get the singature at all. Not to sound morbid and hope nothing happens to Mr. Shelby but he is getting up there.

Also, how long have we been waiting for the gas cap? :headscratch:

How easy is it to get the airbag cover off? How do I do that? (the one on passanger side top)

It's pretty easy, just follow the directions and take your time. The hardest part for me was getting all the clip to disengage while laying on my back reaching my fat hands inside and moving them. It is a lot easier if you remove the glove box which is simple I believe 3-4 screws on the hinge.

Dealer Help with Air Bag Cover

Hey everyone, I got my air bag cover signed while at the 85th Birthday Bash. A few days before the trip, I went to my Ford Dealer and had the service department take it off for me (literally 15 minutes). Upon returning from Vegas, I took it back, they installed it and documented the "installation of a Carroll Shelby Autographed air bag cover" in my service record. (Nice documentation to have with your car paperwork.) Again 15 minutes - I paid the dealer a nominal charge.

I feel confident that your dealer would "comp" a serviceman in Iraq. I would ask your wife to coordinate this. It's painless and the car can be driven - but NOT with a passenger in the front seat.

Hope this helps,
