OK, so I've owned my new Shelby GT for four days now, and I just drove from Odessa to Dallas and averaged 27.7 MPG at highway speeds....so WHY THE HECK DO WE GET CHARGED A GAS GUZZLER TAX OF $1,000.00 ON THESE CARS????? I know of economy cars that don't get that good of mileage on the highway....and I've averaged 16.5 in town even romping on it a good bit....WTF????

SOMEONE is putting money in their pocket, and I don't like it :censored::rant:

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

Combined fuel economy using their test must be at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 = $1000 GGT

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

----------

In other words in actuality we aren't paying the tax but Ford is. We're reimbursing Ford for the tax. The tax is also nothing to do with the actual MPG, so there ya go!

So................

Ford gets to claim it as a deduction, yet were are paying it. It just figures, whenever Congress acts, manufacturers will find a way to make the little guy pay. So how does that discourage manufacturers from making gas guzzlers?

to me the tax is theivery, even if your car is a gas guzzler you are paying taxes every time you fill your car up. So why are we

penalized before hand . If I drive a lot then I'll pay the tax everytime I fill up. This is money someone is pocketing and we are

giving it to them up front. I wanted the car so naturally I paid it too. But it dosen't sit well with me.

Try tracking it from Ford into the bowels of the Federal Government. I'll bet you you'll never find out how it is used.

From what I understand it goes straight to the IRS.

One reason to vote Huckabee since he wants to abolish the IRS.....not that I'm starting a political debate or voting for Huckabee.

Of course if the IRS was gone some other government agency would just steal it for themselves.

My window sticker doesn't show a gas guzzler tax, neither does my invoice from Ford.

The tax is listed on the Shelby package sticker, so, I wonder who's getting the money? If SAI had to pay it, I don't mind reimbursement, but I don't think it tax deductable.

My invoice does show a charge of 420.00 for "FDAF/LMDA assesment", what the Hell is that?

Well, There you have it....a bunch of mumbo jumbo left over from 30 years ago....Geeezzzzzz...That was enacted back when we were sitting in lines to get a few gallons of gas because of a proclaimed "GAS SHORTAGE"!!! We don't have a gas shortage now, so why are we still paying a tax that's 30 years old and left lying on some old book somewhere??? Because the Politicians are stuffing it in their pockets, that's why!!!! I'm in amazement that we as Americans keep on paying for things that noone ever questions...Just call me BIG WHY!!!!

And as far as those EPA estimated gas mileage results that are posted on the window stickers, those are a FRAUD too, because they have not gone out and driven every vehicle to get those...they are only an ESTIMATE....well, I can estimate that I'm gonna pay $1.00 in taxes at the end of the year for the entire year, but I'd bet that I'd be wrong....anybody want to bet me on that????

NO GAS GUZZLER TAXES!!!!! Come on, this is the 21st Century....get real Congress and Presidential hopefuls.....of course, if the Democrats get in office, we'll be paying two or three times that in some other tax!!!! OK, sorry, don't get me started....

Very interesting that a 30 year old tax is still out there like that and noone does question it though.....

My accountant told me the gas guzzler tax is not tax deductible even on the long form. If you have some reference or documentation I would appreciate it as I will file a revised form.

This country was founded on actions protesting a tyrannical government, including the Boston Tea Party, which was the result of an unfair tax.

Somebody said they didn't want to start a political debate but I have no hesitation to at least raise an issue. What do you think will happen to Muscle Cars in general if either Hillary or Barak are elected? And I will make it fair and also ask the same about McCain. We already know the stand of liberals towards gas guzzler taxes, CAFE standards, EPA emissions, etc. Better paint those rear suspensions to keep'em from rusting and make them last forever.

Oh please. Republican's held BOTH houses and the Presidency for 6 years and did NOTHING. The issue is not Democratic or Republican but American. We have issues with a heavy dependence on Foreign oil and a reluctance to build new refineries. "NOT IN MY BACK YARD" is also cross party BTW. This is the price you pay if you want a car like this, simple as that! Hopefully it will get people to buy more fuel efficient cars! That will mean reduced demand and LOWER prices at the pump for us! Taxes are passed on to the consumer all the time but some industries, like communications, airlines, and now autos, clearly tell you that they are doing so to rile you you up against the tax. That's fine but there are a lot of safety related and other tax costs built into the car as well and that's just the way it is.

Jeff, first I think we all realize the president does not control gas prices. But I do want to ask you, and others, a question about gas prices. We always hear that gas prices are the result of supply and demand, right? And everyone tells us we have a dependence on foreign oil which drives the prices higher, correct?

What would happen if we decreased our dependency on foreign oil by improving mileage by say 50% ? Would we have cheaper gas? I don't think so. OPEC would merely pump less gas, creating a shortage, and raise the price by 50%. OPEC needs a minimum amount of cash flow to exist. They are going to obtain that amount of monies by whatever means necessary. Since we don't control the oil we do not control the price.

Another interesting aspect is if we improve mileage by 50% we pay less in fuel tax since there is a per gallon surcharge in the price of fuel. If you decrease the amount of gallons by 50% the government collects 50% less in fuel taxes. Then they have to raise other taxes so as to maintain the same amount of cash flow for roads, etc.

Sorry to bring you the news, but US oil consumption is driven by NIMBY. It's easier and less impact on us to do all that nasty stuff in someone else's back yard.

When gasoline hits $5/gallon for a few years sustained, there will be alot fewer tree huggers. Drilling in Alaska, off shore in in the Gulf of Mexico will be suddenly more appealing. There are ways to drill now with only temporary impact and after the well is done it's hardly visible.

Just my 2c.

Oh yeah, classic case of tax driven subsidies. Our little town was dependent on a stream flow and water rights that all but disappeared about 4 or 5 years ago. Water consumption went way down. The town's revenue from water got slashed, and the water enterprise fund almost went broke. They had to raise water rates. People had a hard time grasping how water conservation and less consumption led to an increase in water bills.

Sucks to be on the town board in a small town like this. Never again.

Actually, since we produce roughly 52% of the oil we use, using your 50% number we'd be entirely independent of our OPEC friends!

pandoras box for sure..the problems arises on what exactly should this money fund...you want roads...others want health care..end of poverty, education funding..the list is endless...also take into account should somebody in rural texas pay for roads in your area?..your state fuel tax was or is to help support local infrastructure so what happened?...the monies are rolled into a "general fund" and well if somebody wants to save the spotted owl more then improve roads..guess where the money goes..the gas guzzler tax is a way for the epa to generate money without federal tax increase on the public..some here have said it goes to the irs..rest assured the epa gets its cut of the pie...we will really never know how that tax on you "the wealthy who can afford the car and the tax that goes along with purchase" is distrubuted or what it exactly funds..its like you give your kid a dollar for a soda and he walks out of the quickie mart with a chocolate zinger..the gas guzzler tax is in essence no different then legalized gambling...legalized gambling takes monies from the poor as there in no way to otherwise tax the poor..they are poor but they will gamble...in our case (shelby guys)...you wanna play you gotta pay..epa..department of energey..department of education..all richard nixon's bright ideas..on the bright side if you wanna make yoursef feel really bad...start looking at FICA....with the extra 15% (approximate) in my paycheck i could fund my own retirement and be hundreds of thousands of dollars ahead of what i would ever expect to get from social security

in a media conference a journalist said that the experts predicted that the gas prices are goin to reach average of $4 per gallon by the summer and guess what George Dubya Bush said?

"$4 a gallon? i dont know anything about that." :headscratch:

yeah right <_<

anyway all i can say is that i am using less fuel than i did in my truck, so in time, the savings will pay for that stupid $1000 GGT.

kinda wished i had a bigger gas tank though. 15 gallons still aint enough. :burnout:

All of those gov't departments have real people working/shuffling paper/making "rules"...and they aren't doing all that for nothing!

A BIG part of ALL taxes/fees go to pay these people's wages, and they spend to help keep the "economy" going...

More people "work" for local/state/federal government than work in the private sector...sounds like socialism, doesn't it?

NO OFFENSE INTENDED TOWARD GOV'T EMPLOYEES!

FYI...I asked my accountant about the GGT last month when she came in to get all my company data for year end. She told me it was not deductable. If someone can get us info on why it can that would be great. But I am not willing to take a IRS audit unless I know it can be done.

As I said, it's my understanding (for what it's worth) that it is the car manufacturer that's charged the tax not us. Rather than absorb it as part of the price, as they do most other taxes, they hightlight it and we reimburse Ford. We however are not the ones being charged.

Again...just my understanding.
