My experience with Scoot Drake/ SPP

Hi,

I just want to share my experience in trying to buy a set of Razors yesterday.

I called SPP, instead of ordering on line, because I am adding 14" Baer rotors to my GT and had questions regarding clearence with 18" Razors. First, I had to leave a message, that so far has not had a call back.

The second time I called I was put on hold for 10 minutes. When I finally got to speak with a sales person, he was terse and disinterested. Not my expectation based on what I have heard Scott testify.

The conversation went like this:

"I am putting Bear Eradispeed Plus 2 rotors on my car. Will 18" Razors clear these rotors with a 6" backspace?"

"that's what they are made for."

"Great, do you meet comp with other on line vendors?

"No"

"Really?, Summit, Jeg's and Street and Track all have the same wheel for $100+ a set cheaper and they offer free shipping"

"It's not the same wheel"

"I googled the SPP part number and got at least 10 hits from different vendors. That is why I know their prices"

"It's not the same wheel"

"OK, do you give consideration to Team Shelby members?"

"No"

"OK, do you have the wheel in stock?

"No"

"When do expect to have them?"

"2 months"

"Wow, is there an issue?"

"Yes, poor quality"

"Can you expand on that?"

"No, we just returned a bunch due to poor quality"

"OK, thank you"

I know it was Monday, but I really expected something different.

Maybe Amy or Mr Shelby should give a little ass kicking training on how they want the Shelby brand represented!

As a side note, I called Maximum Motorsports, asked the same qustions about brake clearence. The sales guy knew what he was talking about, emailed me a fitment template, verified the fit with his tech guy and had my second choice wheel in stock.

Don't quote me on this...someone else please step in and correct me if I'm wrong.....

but I THINK that there are some Razors that don't say "Shelby" on one of the spokes, and perhaps that's the wheel that all the other companies are selling. Anyone notice this?

Dave

Hey Dave,

Looks like the same wheel to me -

The Razors on the American Racing site say Shelby on them. Maybe it's Scott Drake's that don't say Shelby on them.

I called SPP yesterday also just to verify the fitment for backspacing on the wheels I needed. I was treated very well and the rep answered all of my questions with no problems. I did however order the wheels online. I ordered 20" black razors for my GT-H. They do have those in stock. One thing I found out by looking just about everywhere, is that the Black Razor is exclusive to Shelby. You can get the gunmetal or chrome many places, but not black. Only through SPP from what I can find. I do also know for a fact, that many of the Razors out there built by AR do not say Shelby on them. I have a buddy that has some on his mustang. I know the chrome ones sitting at a Discount Tire where a friend of mine works, also do not say Shelby on them, but the catalog calls them Shelby Razors. So perhaps some places can get them and others cannot, I don't know. I could have got the chrome 20's for $200 each, but I really wanted the black. He called AR directly, and they stated that they can only sell the black's to SPP. I'm not sure why that is. I also needed some other parts from SPP, so I paid the extra 59.99 a wheel to get the black.

American Racing produces two different series of Razors, the "regular" Razors that come without the Shelby stamping on the spoke and an AR center cap, and the Shelby edition Razors with the Shelby branding on the spoke and cap. The two series have entirely different part #'s and different price points (the Shelby version costs somewhat more). Any American Racing dealer or wholesaler can order either series from AR (the exception is the black Shelby Razors are an SPP exclusive item..)

You do have to be careful where you order from online as many dealers call all of them "Shelby" Razors regardless of whether they actually are Shelby branded or not.

They look different to me. Look at the word Shelby on yours, then look at how the word Shelby is cast into the wheel on these.

Same type of wheel. The first image is actually a drawing vice a photo which is why it looks different.

When you run into a A-H as a sales rep, get their name so you can complain about a specific person.

If I remember correctly none of the Chrome Razors have the Shelby mark on the spoke.

When you complain about SPP, it is a direct link to SAI since it is their parts group.

Being out of stock is nothing new to SAI or SPP. IMO too many new parts being offered without proper supply, equals unhappy customers and lost sales to other shops.

Everytime I have called SPP they seemed slamed too. Which in itself is good because it means they are taking orders.

That said ... I deal with is Steve W ... really good guy !One trick Ive learned is to e-mail Steve what I need and usually within a few hours I get a response. Those who want his e-mail just pm me

Just as an update, I received an e-mail correspondence from SPP this morning with my tracking info and my wheels and other stuff will be here tomorrow. I also received an automated call from UPS with info on the shipment this morning also. Four days from online order to receipt of items of this size I must say, is faster than I would have ever expected. No business can ever please everybody, but I must say, this is one of my best experiences with online ordering and responsiveness. :headspin:

Same thing with me on something else I had ordered! Can't beat that!
