GT 500 Rear Spolier on the SGT

Recommended Posts

I have done it, installed it myself, purchased the stripes from Shelby Parts, I like the look and took about 1 hr to install, hard part was getting the nerve to drill the holes in the deck lid, I also purchased another deck lid and had it striped, so i can go back stock if I want too, havent had any downsides, glad i did it.

personally of all the deck lids i have seen on all of the Mustangs at our dealership the SHELBYGT500 wing is BY far the best and its got nothing to do with the fact that I own a GT500

That wing would look good on any Mustang .. esp Calif SC edition

Rick,

Did you buy the spoiler from Ford? How are the decals sold, as a kit? I assume they are from the Shelby store? Where did you but the spare decklid, was it already painted or did it come primed and you had to paint and stencil it?

Thanks for the info

Keith

I agree :happy feet:

Put one on my GT and a California Special front fascia. The spoiler kit came with a template to drill the holes but I didn't need it for the GT which came with a spoiler that fit the GT500 spoiler bolts perfectly.

I did the rear spoiler also. Got it from Ford, had it painted. Used the template and drilled the holes and a nice tight install. Make sure the holes align before pulling the tape plastic off because when it sticks it sticks and if something was not aligned you will have a hard time unsticking it. Also you need to wait 2-3 weeks after painting to stripe it. I had a pro do the stripes and got them from Shelby, however the exact same material and color can be had from a stripe shop and done in one piece per side vice the two piece over lap style Shelby has.

I also replaced the rear trunk key bezel with a satin silver one with a Cobra on it and only says Ford at the bottom. Looks far better than the chrome GT. Very time consuming to get the thing off with a hair dryer due to all the tape used. Mustangs Unlimited has these and should have been that way from the factory really.

Another item I did (Ford Option and Part) was to replace the rear view mirror with a self dim one that has home link for garage door opening and a compass. They have one with outside temp but I can find that out by opening my window. Pretty easy install just be careful not to pry hard on the clip or the windshield may/will crack.

Last thing was to add a MTX sub in the trunk. Many out the like JL but did not want to spend over $600 to get some bass punch. Contrary to what I saw posted somewhere (and I knew anyway) you will get bass boost plenty for the car. No need to remove the rear seat to hear and no it is not really noticeable outside the car. Bass (sub bass) is not directional anyway just like a home system with Bose or Klispch speakers. The MTX has its own amp that turns on and a knob (remote) to adjust the bass from the driver seat. Only issue there was (signal sense amp) is the car security sends an electrical signal thru the car wiring (goes in the speaker wire also for some reason) about every 10-15 min to check car status. When that happens it turns on the amp in the sub for a moment and you hear a vibe and then the amp goes back off.

To eliminate that you install 2 capacitors 400mv (millifarad) 25v or more on the driver side rear speakers where you tapped in for the amp signal and it will stop that. I suppose using a JL sub that requires a external amp that won't happen because you use a line level to RCA adapter and has to go thru the amp that is larger than the MTX one, and the filters/cap in that amp stop the signal. Anyway bottom line is the bass works and MTX is about $800 cheaper than the JL. That is doing it yourself so no labor cost. I have a JL set up as described here in my 05 Vette an works awesome but also no rear seat and a bigger amp.

Final mini mod is I'm replacing the front grill with the black Shelby grill that has fog lights in it. There is a wire harness already there for this and the grill is plug and play. Had it out to see last week. Shold have the grill by next Friday. The lower area I was worried about something hitting the AC condenser and is wide open for trash, so I installed a black billet grill. Matches well and unless you really look don't even notice it. All these installs are pretty easy but not as easy as one thinks or is led to believe by those that sell it. Obviously I'm very anal about installing parts so it is done as perfect or better than Shelby and can be returned to stock easy. Only thing I would need for that is a rear trunk lid, but I have no intention of returning it back without a rear wing anyway. Will have to get pics and post soon. :shift: :happy feet: :happy feet: :happy feet:

Rick,

Where did you purchase your spare deck lid? Was it a take-off or a new primered one?

Thanks,

Mike

I was on the fence about the spoiler, too. I liked the GT500 spoiler and thought that one would look good on an SGT. I saw Pottydr's pics and was sold. I would post a pic, but it looks just like his. I had a local auto art place do the stripes - the tape quality is better than stock but color match is just about perfect. I got my spoiler from Shelby parts. Interesting, but there was no mounting template or nuts for the mounting bolts included from SPP. I like mine well enough that I have no plans to go back "bare".

I'm more than willing to do it! I believe it looks better, and at speeds in excess of 130 mph,it will help hold the rear down. It's a win-win scenerio!

Sounds like the only "safe" way to do this is to buy another trunk lid and install the spoiler with stripes. If you ever want the original all you would have to do is swap. Especially if you are worried about collectability someday.

Honestly, I think by the time these cars are "collectable' I'll be dead or too old to care! :hysterical2:

Has anyone put a GT500 rear spoiler on their SGT? If so, any downsides? Installation easy? Where do you get the decals to match the car?

Thanks

Does anybody know what the difference are between the Ford Shelby spoiler P/N 7R3Z-6344210-BA and the Ford racing spoiler P/N M-16600-SVTC? There is a big differnce in the price. Supposedly, they are one in the same.

How about super strength velcro strips on your decklid and the bottom of the spoiler---sometimes you feel like a spoiler and sometimes you don't! :hysterical2:

I was reading on another thread that the spoiler adds down force on th rear end at high speeds. I know mine was rock solid at 135, it had more but my 4.10 gear limited me I'm sure.... also ran out of road.

SUE Just another reason FOR spoilers! :hysterical2:

Sue - It really is NOT a huge decision either way. The car will NOT be worth less or more if a spoiler is installed either way. So do what you like and then don't look back. My opinion: The GT500 spoiler with the SGT stripes over the spoiler is double-hot with 20" chrome razors on my black SGT. Without the Razors, it is still a nice looking mod but looks better with the Razors. At least that is what people tell me all the time!!!

Maybe I will put it on this summer :)

The regular GT spoiler was the first thing I did to mine right after I bought the car... After seeing one on the 2006 GT-H, it just didn't look right (to me) not to have a spolier on my 2007 SGT...
