Great online reviews of the GT500

If you want to read two great, hysterical reviews of the GT500, see the links below - and make sure you listen to the 10 minutes audio clip of the two reviewers sparring about the GT500. One guy thinks its great - the other awful. Great stuff if you haven't seen and heard it already. Clearly, each reviewer appears well educated about powerful cars so at least it's not two novices providing opinions.

Since I purchased my GT500 about 2 weeks ago and have yet to drive it (weather) I would love to read the reactions each of you have towards the reviews below. Please do share.

I've read these before but had not heard the live talking. I think the one guy summed it all up when he said it's a big american car like in the 70's and he hated them then and he hates it now. No one that doesn't like muscle cars will like this car. Anyone that does will love this car.

It's not got the best stock suspention (agreed) but with a little change to rhe LCA's and UCA the hop goes away and then it's pretty decent. When you put on new springs and shocks etc the thing handles pretty darn good.

The interior is kind of basic but not a one of us bought this car for the fine interior. The external looks and power is MUSCLE CAR and I bet that's the reason we all bought the car. It may not be a refined as some of the euro cars out there but it's a fun attention getting ride. Look at the top gear video review. That one was the best i think I have seen. The guy was laughing and smiling the whole time and trying to say how much he didn't like things about it but couldn't deny how much fun he had driving it.

I love the car stock - I love the car modded. It's my favorite car that I've ever owned or driven for sure.

Those articles are fairly dead-on. The car car is not refined, nor is it meant to be. It simply gets my heart punding for a lot of reasons. Just by looking at it - and literally after launching it. It is a lot of power to control in anyone's hands. You better practice with this beast before you start pushing the envelope. I've never had such a kick in the pants.

The first guy gets it, it's fun to drive and makes ya smile....The counterpoint guy is a euro loving twit. Ya know, either you "get it" or you don't...... Comparing the GT-500 to a Porsche, Vette or a TL is missing the whole point of the car.

Personally I thought the criticism of the car was a bit harsh and a bunch of “hogwash”!

A 500hp, 12.8 ¼ mile, stock car for under $50,000 – please – that is a great deal.

Where do these “yahoos” learn how to drive? I have no problems driving this car to the limit giving a history of driving much worst machinery in the past. Granted you do have to compensate for conditions at times, it is a great drive for the price! If you can’t drive a true muscle car, or want the car to do the driving for you, go spend $250,000 on a nice European vehicle. The quality of the 2007 Shelby GT500 is leaps-and-bounds better than anything from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

First for the naysayers, how does 450hp at the rear wheels sound? That is pure stock, nothing short of incredible. Fit and finish is superb! Paint is the nicest I have ever seen on an American car. Not a single complaint. Minor modifications put these cars in the 11's in the ¼ mile. Braking and handling falls well within what I would consider acceptable. A very nice chassis with too many changes over standard Mustang GT to mention. Engine and transmission are incredibly smooth; the tall 3:31 gearing and wide power band makes it a true rocket ship.

A small-block, 5.4-liter V8 that's basically a detuned version of the engine from the Ford GT supercar. On the GT500, supplier and cost concerns required the use of a wet-sump oil system, a cast-iron block and a "Roots-type" supercharger with 9 psi of boost. But the GT's four-valve aluminum heads transferred over unchanged to the Shelby GT500, as did many smaller items, such as the piston rings and bearings. To manage that horsepower boost, Ford's Special Vehicle Team engineers reworked the Mustang's MacPherson strut front suspension, fitting stiffer shocks, higher-rate springs and an upgraded stabilizer bar. The solid-axle rear suspension uses upgraded springs as well, along with a Panhard rod to control wheel movement. Although a non-independent rear suspension might seem out of place on what's supposed to be a state-of-the-art performance car, the GT500 proves to be an agile and willing performer, whether on a racetrack or a remote two-lane road. Credit goes to the quick rack-and-pinion steering system, as well as the liberal traction control system, which allows for plenty of tail-out thrills. You can thank Carroll Shelby for the GT500's 18-by-9.5-inch wheels and 255/45 front and 285/40 rear Goodyear F1 tires: After driving a prototype, Shelby insisted on larger rolling stock to better manage the car's power and handling capabilities.

+1. Very well stated. My daily driver is a german sports sedan. It is very efficient, practical has a nice interior and great handling. However it is nowhere near where the Shelby is as far as the fun factor is concerned, plus the Shelby gets a lot more thumbs ups and positive comments as far as looks are concerned.

I'm a musician. I play trumpet in symphony and jazz. I also play electric bass in jazz and rock.

The first reviewer is like a classical symphony buff. He may listen to jazz, but thinks rock music is crap.

The second review appreciates music, understands the complexity and beauty of Mozart, figures most jazz is nice background music, but actually puts out money to buy tickets to the Rolling Stones.

So, you basically have Mercedes, Miata, and Shelby; Classical, jazz, and rock. There aren't a lot of people who like them all, everybody has a preference. I personally have the most fun playing rock. I happen to own a GT500. Hmmmm....

So, you don't get a classical music buff to review a rock concert, and vice versa.

Another way to look at it is this:

If you're heading out on a date, do you want a girl/guy who wants to go to:

-Symphony Hall and sip wine at intermission?

-Coffee house/club, and groove with a martini?

-the Arena and party while experiencing total sensory overload?

Love the horn...Dad was an accomplished musician. I just blow blues harp in dives for love.

Well put.

It's kinda like if you want a symphonic sound, hey, a concert hall tuned for perfect music and a Yamaha Grand is great...but close the doors to a 7 ft high smoky room for 30, put 40 in it, let that sax player wail on it....that's raw power, the kind that no matter who you are, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

When we've finished playing a couple juke joints and dives, the refined people always come out saying they didn't care for that at all...but they are always back the next time we play, just for that feeling it gives you.

First thought from the article, the first two cars he picked were euros...well, he should stick with what he knows... how many times does one have to say this... THE GT500 IS A MUSCLE CAR...quit comparing it to sports cars that cost 2-4 times as much. If you don't like it, fine, go somewhere else and spew your diatribe.

Shelby has always stood for understated looks, but it's got it where it supposed to. That's why it's so simple inside and out, but wails when you stand on the gas. It's not supposed be a track car... It's not supposed be a drag racer. The wonderful thing about it is, it's a beautiful blank canvas to start from, and a great platform built by great people in which to put YOUR dream together. If they built it to handle great on the track, the draggers would hate it, and visa-versa.

It's like playing blues by sheet music... :hysterical2:

When looking for an 04 Cobra, I turned 5 away for the quality ,or lack there of, of the paint and top. I had seen friend's that were great, but the one's I looked at towards the end were terrible. Good thing, just a week after that is when I saw a small blurb about the rumblings of a Shebly GT500. I stopped all looking then and started contacting dealers to put a deposit on one. One dealer accepted with a handshake and stood behind it, even when the ADMs were at the $20k range for a vert. I couldn't be happier.

My GT500's paint is immaculate. Probably the best job I've seen Ford lay down. Fit and finish has been good with the exception of one dash rattle on early leather dashes had on the right side, and a little wind noise on the drivers window (it is a convertible for pete's sake).

I am totally with you on that. I noticed how that flippant English driver was slagging the vehicle but at the time giggling and smirking as he was tossing it around on the race course. Good point.
