New car mileage question

My Certificate of Origin and all the other paperwork for my GT500 showed up from the dealer today (will probably have the license plate in hand before the car shows up :banghead:). Anyway the paperwork indicates that the car has 10 miles on the odometer. Now the owner of the dealership I bought the car from is a family friend, and he told me that he drove the car from the transport truck into his shop and that is where it has sat ever since. He won't let anyone there drive it, and in fact he hasn't even put it on his showroom floor for fear of someone scratching it by accident. Bottom line, I have no doubt in my mind he didn't put 10 miles on it, so my question is where did they come from?

I read online somewhere that they drive the cars from the assembly line to another building somewhere for striping, then presumably they drive them to the railcar or truck transport pick-up area, but 10 miles seems like a lot for that.

Anyway the only reason I ask is that I read in the supplemental owners manual about the boost and rpm limits being restricted until the car had 5 miles put on it. Looks like someone took care of that for me.

Did any of you guys have more than just a mile or two on your "new" car?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Scott

I'd say 99% did.

The cars get driven a lot before it gets to you.

Back and forth between the main plant and the striping plant.

To the transportation staging area.

On/off trains, planes and automobiles (hopefully not driven by John Candy :hysterical: ) during the transportation to your dealer.

Etc.

Plus, some get pulled for additional quality checks at the plant - which put on some more miles.

Oh, and it's "5 consecutive miles" - not just 5 total miles, before the SC comes out of hibernation. Also come on after 50 start/warm up periods.

Don't worry about 10 miles. It's nothing. Really.

Just enjoy it when you get it.

Oh I'll enjoy it! You don't need to sweat that at all! :hysterical:

I'm not worried about it, just curious. Seemed odd that it rolled off the truck showing mileage. Your answer makes sense though.

Thanks for the response!

Mine had 18 miles on it...

But it had 5.2 on it when we picked it up from the railyard. Those yahoos left it sitting there for a couple days, and we found the only way to get it quick was to have the dealer drive it out of there back to the dealership. It added 12 miles to the car and it is when the supercharger was activated, but I got the car a few days early, and out of the possession of what at the time I felt suspicious hands. The guy at the yard even admitted he had been showing it off to friends and coworkers. From the mileage I assume it was just sitting though, no joy rides. Oh, and I followed the service manager back to the dealership and he never even got on it. More self control than me! I nailed it out of the parking lot at the dealer.

Here's a funny story...Mine had 7.2 miles on her. I thought the SC was activated after 5 miles. I didn't realize it was 5 consecutive miles...DUH>. So, I am coming to a stop light & getting a bit worried that my new 500hp car feels like a 250hp car. I had thoughts of turning around & buying the Bullitt instead. As I waited at the light, I dialed the dealership to ask my salesperson why I din't hear or feel the supercharger. While on hold, I realeased the clutch & put my foot half way down on the gas. No change. However, as I shifted into 2nd gear while getting very agitaged over this dog, I put my foot to the floor! I was "scared straight"!....Holy Buckets! The supercharger kicked in w/ a vengence & spun the wheels nearly out of control @ a 40 mph roll! As I slowed down to maintain my composier, I glanced @ the odometer. 12.3 miles! Needless to say, I hung up the phone.

The car now sits covered w/ 30 miles on her. I haven't been able to drive since due to the Chicago area weather. I do however, remeber that moment like it was seconds ago. Quite frankly, it was the best suprise of power I have ever felt.

Waiting for 41 degree weather, Dave

Mine was delivered with 5 miles on it.

As for boost, i love hearing other stories. I don't know what the deal was with my car but i didn't have boost until after i clocked 50 miles. I drove it several times beforehand at more than 5 consecutive miles so i don't know why i had no boost. I remember exactly where i was when i had "supercharger" capabilities.

So, question for the masses....at what mileage did you have boost?

50 miles here.

Mine had something like 26 miles on it. The boost was not yet enabled though. I thought the mileage was kinda high but I bought it anyway. It was to darn purdy :happy feet:

Mine had exactly 30 miles on her. I thought it was kind of high also; but it was exactly the car I wanted and at MSRP to boot. What's the worse that could of been done to it? A burn out? Oh, like the car will never see that with me driving! :hysterical:

Exactly. If someone was able to hurt the car within 30 miles then it really not worth having.

Improper break-in / high revs would be my only concern, but anyone could have done that even in the first 5 miles so no use worrying about it I guess.

I see your point. Proper break in tends to subjective anyway. I have seen people baby a freshly built engine for the first 500 and it turned out to be a slug. I have also seen people drive the heck out of it right from the start and the engine is awesome with no problems.

We built countless small block chevys for my '55 and Boss 302s for my brothers Maverick (yeah baby) back in the day. When we got them in, we ran them for 5 minutes, did a leak check and stood on the gas. They either held, or they didn't.

I did go pretty easy on the GT500, I think about 500 miles before I really red lined her. Guess I'm getting old :headscratch:

My 03 Cobra had 36 miles on it and a cirtificate that it was pulled from the line for "QA" test run by the factory.

I'm with TexasShelby, run em, if they are going to come apart so be it. Every one of my new hi po Ford cars had the pee water run out of them and they all were great cars. Those include a70 Boss 302, 85 Turbo Coupe, 90 Super Coupe, 99 Cobra and the 03 Cobra. All were non oil users, all except the 99 had over 110K on them when sold or traded and none of them had the slighest engine/drive train problems. Now having said that, the oil was changed after 500 miles and run through a coffee filter looking for "stuff" and every 3000 after that. The Boss was the only one that did not get synthetic from new, it had a steady diet of Castoral.

Mine had 104 miles on it. I'm the second owner of my 08 GT500. The first owner ordered, bought it, left the lot. 3 days later he traded it into the Porsche dealer because the GT500 had too much horsepower for him :hysterical2: Wuss...anyways. He paid 58 for it, I paid 52. Saw it on the lot and had to have it. Still over MSRP, but it was an impulse buy that I don't regret in the slightest.

Dave,

Best story ever!

I'm hoping for a come to Jesus moment myself when the SC kicks in. I am a bit of an acceleration freak. Top end speed has never meant as much to me as that kick in the pants. I bought a Kawasaki ZX-14 this year and ran out of warm weather before I could get it completely broken in, but I did manage to get enough miles on it that I could rev the motor to 6000 rpm (the initial limit is 4000). I tell you what, just running it up through the first three gears to 6000 rpm, makes me wonder how the hell you hold on all the way to 11000! That thing pulls like a runaway freight train coming down hill! Simply scary.

I am hoping for a similar jolt from the GT500. Reading your story gives me hope that it will live up to expectations!

I like my new Porsche...glad I traded in my GT500.

NOT! :hysterical2:

You almost had me there for a moment Dave. I though maybe that was what you meant when you described yourself as an "Enthusiast of all makes". :hysterical:
