Cold day start ups

This is something I've always wondered, but never really asked. How long should I let the car warm up on cold days before I leave? I went to leave this morning, and it was COLD here in AR!! :D I let it warm up for about 15min, but thats just I wanted the inside to get warm.

I read somewhere on Fords web sight that you do not have to let the car warm up any more. That's why they use 5W-20 oil now. I can't find that link but I do have a link the explains why it's worse to let them Idle. http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/moments/s2044311.htm

I agree with them, just let it idle about 15-30 seconds and drive it so it gets to it's optimal operating temperature faster.

Well, I can't say 5W20 has much to do with this, but you're pretty close to right on the rest of it.

It's an EPA requirement that the engine reach a minimal operating temp within 7 minutes of ignition, and the EEC and CATS make it happen. I have tested this myself on my 3 Marauders, on zero degree days, I had warm air from the heater vents within 7 minutes and/or 1 mile of casual driving. I start the car first, and once I'm belted in and in gear, I'm gone. Letting a car warm up these days, is just wasting gas.

Start it up, wait a min, check gauges, back it out, and see ya...............

I drive it easy though till the temp is up. :)
