This is my first Shelby...my first Ford....I had a 1994 Trans AM GT 5.7L I used Royal Purple 5w-30. I'm being told that Royal Purple does not meet Fords new requirments. Any suggestions? Ames oil or Motorcraft?

Thanks,

GT Danny

I just use what the owner's manual recommends for awhile. Well...I would if I had changed my oil yet...then I'll probably switch to Mobil 1 at some point...

well if your car is driven less than 3000 miles a year like mine then I would sudjest changing in the spring then every other month till winter.since these are performance engines go with a synthetic blend at the least.the mobile 1 full synthetic is probably the best way to go because of price and its on the shelf everywhere.any SM 5-20 oil will due so theres not realy any way to go wrong.

IMHO, the best oil for the 4.6L-3V is clean oil. Straight up 5W20 synethic blend, and I prefer Quaker State @ 1.99 per qt.

I change my oil every 2500 miles, and the expensive stuff just never made any sense to me. I don't believe it makes much of a diffference anyway, and I'd rather save the extra 6 bucks a qt. for other things.

Just my .02c on oil.

I am partial to Mobil 1. I thinkit is the best blend in te market and in fact has the best Viscocity Index of any synthetic oil.

However, the more important factor, asuming you change your oil at regular intervals, is the oil filter. Use a cheap oil filter and it won't matter if you are using the best oil in the world.

Quite true. WIX and Fram filters are the worst with weak "hold/blow back" valves that can come out and contaminate oil flow throughout the crankcase. Stick with the approved Motorcraft filter, or, recommended Ford Racing filter, they are the same (except for their costs).

BTW, it was mentioned ^ there somewhere that the SGT has a "performance engine". Sorry folks, it does not have an engine any different than 100,000 other FMC 4.6L-3V applications. It's a stock FMC 3V V8 with some improved breathing and a tune, nothing more.

A friend of mine with a 2006 Mustang GT said he did research and WIX was one of best & is recommened by AMES Oil?!!! In my TransAm I used a K&N oil filter.

Maybe you should ask him again?

I work for the Chicago PD. and we have a fleet approximating 80 percent Ford CV/PI vehicles with the 4.6L-2V and 3V engines. 1/4th of this fleet has suffered failed engines and 1/2 of those warranty claims have been denied/rejected by FMC.

The primary cause cited for denial by FMC was discovery of evidence of the "blow-back" valve found in the crankcase and snout mounted oil pumps. Seems this "orange plastic" valve can come out and get ground up in the high RPMs police cars often see. Once that happens, the engine goes south, and the CPD's warranty claim gets denied. At least, this is what I have read in Department reports.

IMHO, this is fairly strong evidence that Fram and WIX filters are in fact "less expensive in fleet use", but not up to FMC standards in application. Save a few pennies, and spend a few bucks later, eh?

Like I said ^ there, stick with the Motorcraft/FRP filters, so, you won't have to "coin-up" if your engie fails and FMC finds some orange plastic in your crankcase.

Just my .02C on it all, happy motoring, gents.

BTW...Never heard of Ames...Oil, gas, tranny fluid, whatever.
