This Month' Car & Driver Mag. C6 'vette vs Shelby

Interesting article. They describe the Shelby as porky, nose heavy and boy racer stripes (?). And of course the C6 finishes 1st. 1/4 mile speed on the C6 was 12.8 @ 113mph & the Shelby 12.9 @ 112mph. C6 braking was far superior depite the Brembos, 0-60 also goes to the C6: 4.3 vs 4.5. They even take an indirect shot at the 500hp that was SAE certified. "Maybe Car & Driver were off that day." page 54. They describe the C6 as a fiberglass wonder and the Shelby has rear seats. lol!

Brembo's or not, the thing weighs nearly 2 tons. Of course the MUCH LIGHTER Corvette will out brake it.

They say the weight is "unforgivable". Should we ban them? :)

 

Powershifting, like Evan Smith does, is also a LAME way to test a car for the public. It's fine if your car is a drag car and you want to win races, but not as a test method.

If you look at the ratings catagories, and why the corvette was rated well above the shelby, you can see that it is all subjective crap.

 

features (I guess heated seats are vitally important for sports cars)

interior and exterior styling (they obviously have wet dreams over vettes)

fit and finish (guess their vette roof didn't come off while testing)

gotta have it factor (what the hell!!)

fun to drive (all feedback from other mag writers suggest shelby is a blast to drive)

 

remove this crap and the shelby actually beat the vette by 1 point.

 

Isn't it funny how a mag can use subjective stuff to make their predetermined choice come out ahead. Not exactly a fair and balanced article.

If you want balance, read all the mags, and draw general conclusions. My personal thoughts are the Vette is the better sports car, it's limits are so much higher than 99% of drivers. The GT500 is the better use it to impress day to day toy, but it will never be mistaken for a "great" sports car. Conclusion, we need more choice! (at around $40-55k)

Back in the day when Chevy had the Camero, it was Camero vs. Mustang. Always has been. But now that Chevy gave up on the Camero after getting their butt kicked year in & year out they decide to quit making it.

 

The editors all know this & now have to figure out what else they can compare the Mustang to? I know! The only fast GM car they have & that's a Corvette. 2 seats vs. 4 seats, now that's an apple to apples comparison. :doh::hysterical:

Wow so according to the genius above, The Mustang was kicking the Camaro's butt repeatedly? Sure, in sales. Enthusiasts care about performance. The Camaro OWNED the Mustang from 1993-2002. Go race a 2001 Cobra versus a 2002 SS and you'll see a slaughter, in Chevy's favor.

 

Hmm, 400 HP NA V8 vs 500 HP SUPERCHARGED V8? Now that's an apples to apples comparison. Oh wait, but the Vette still smoked it.

very true jetsolver, not a lot of choices right now for most people. It also looks like what is coming up, the challenger and camaro, are really not going to add anything very different or special into the mix. Probably much like the shelby for weight and handling, with the potential to have a little more or a little less hp. It just bothers me that C&D had to fall back on something so stupid as a biased rating system to tout the vette as superior.

 

Maybe the real problem was that the vette and shelby should not be grouped together at all for comparisons. Vette is a good handling car, but most people I know that have gotten one only keep it for a year or two because they do not care for it as a daily driver. I suppose that anyone who buys the shelby for just road racing will also get rid of it soon, because it is just not the best choice for that. Since the shelby will soon have some competition in its class, maybe it is time for the vette to have some real competition in its price range. There are some foreign cars out there that are close, but nothing that can go head to head without modifications.

The aftermarket takes care of everything you mentioned. No need for the manufacturer to do this.

Actually they are not my opinions, they are facts from C and D's test. Or should I go with an UNBIASED source like muscle MUSTANGS and fast FORDs? lol

Intguys, I actually think that adding more options like that raises the base price; manufacturers like to keep things relatively simple. Adding choices adds complexity and adds cost, lowering profit. Ford is unlikely to do things to reduce profit right now.

 

Most of these cars are likely to go to baby boomers with too much money anyway. this group is unlikely to go after extreme performance. Those like me that want to, will find a way with the aftermarket. That way I will have the ultimate set of choices, and will still end up with a better shelby than Ford could ever have provided. What the hell is money, when you can milk a few more HP from your car?? :hysterical:

 

evil, at 3200 # the car would no longer be a mustang. those that want that type of vehicle should go get a decent fox body and stick in a performance drivetrain. could probably do it for 15-20K and have a nice ride. I want the size and comfort of the new mustang body. that involves more weight, and is a trade off I am more than willing to make. after I am done with it, I am sure I will not overly worry about a vette in the lane next to me. those kind of mods also require tradeoffs (mainly money) that I again am willing to make. I do not expect Ford to cater to me, since I bet I will be in the minority of shelby buyers.

i REALIZE THAT ALL THESE OPTIONS CAN BE EXERCIZE THRUOGH THE AFTERMARKET HOWEVER ANYTHING YOU DO WILL VOID ANY WARRENTY. IF YOU WERE ABLE TO DO IT AT THE MANUFACTURER YOU KNOW IT WILL BE DONE RIGHT AND RETAIN ALL WARRENTIES. i MEAN THEY OFFERED THINGS LIKE THAT IN THE 60'S WHY NOT IN 07. THEY DON'T EVEN OFFER DIFFERENT RIMS WHICH I'M SURE WOULDN'T BE TO DIFFICULT.

I've never really considered the Mustang a Sportscar. Not refined and pretty enough to be.

Rather, it's a Muscle Car and the last surviving one at that........for now. That is it's heritage and continues to be. Big, heavy, muscular, brawn, rear wheel drive, V8, high horsepower and lots of torque! Sweeeet!!

The Z06 is performing only slightly better then the GT500. I know the Shelby's are being price gouged right now but if you think in terms of MSRP. The Shelby is around 40,000 and the Z06 is around 70,000. That Shelby is giving the Z06 a desent run for being 30,000 cheaper. It's a shame dealers are marking the Shelby's up. Personally I think the Shelby is the better car regardless of the numbers and it's weight. If I could get my hands on one I'd put 373's in the rear and enjoy. Wait untill MM & FF starts to modify it. Shelby has more potential. Though leaving it all original is nice too......Shelby has more cool factor and Mystique then the Z06................Paying more then MSRP is wrong though and I won't do it.

1 second in the 1/4 is "slight" to you? 200MPH, is the Shelby stable there? Also, why do you add $5k to the price of the Z06? They are $65k base and have less ADM then Shelby's. The Z06 runs with 150k exotics, the Shelby does not. Dude, the BASE Vette was THREE SECONDS ahead of the Shelby on a road course after 1 lap. That's an eternity.

This gets back to 2 seats vs. 4 seats. Duh, a 2 seater with reasonable close power is going to beat a 4 seater.

 

A vette vs. a shelby should not be a reasonable comparision so I wouldn't brag about a base vette with a performance package being a shelby Chris

C6 vs GT500 is a drivers race in a straight line. Any other performance category the Vette will own the GT500. Does it make me not like the GT500, hell no. They are two different types of cars. Ones a sports car the other is a muscle car. It all depends on what you want.
