Big Brake Kit

Recommended Posts

What do you guys/gals think of using the Brembo GT500 brake ugrade kit in lieu of spending $4K for the Shelby big brake (front) and Baer rear brake kit?

Ford Racing Big Brake Kit

[M-2300-S] $1,199.00

Fits 2005-08 Mustang GT

Kit will upgrade the front brakes to 2007-08 SVT Mustang 14" rotors and 4-piston calipers

Includes 2007 SVT Mustang rear pads for use in stock Mustang GT rear calipers

Includes Goodridge DOT four-piece hose kit and attaching parts

Requires 18" M-1007-S1895, M-1007-S1895B wheel or equivalent for caliper clearance

I plan on tracking my car once in awhile. Is this a good alternative to a $4K Baer upgrade? I would still have to upgrade my wheels to 20". I am not trying to do this on the cheap, just trying to be practical. Besides, I would be saving around $3K for a potential S/C upgrade.

Try replacing the pads with something more agressive first. If the brakes fade too much or if you are not happy with the results, you are only out a couple of hunderd, then consider the big brake kit.

Contact Zekhausen racing this guy is an expert ask him about the AXXIS dust free Pads and let him know your goals he can guide you. His website is WWW.ZECKHAUSEN.COM.

I have used these brake pads on everything I own and they work great.

I put the irotors on my car with the stainless steel lines and Installed the hawk pads, I drove my car very hard in vegas, I also let an instuctor take a Ford exe out in my car which also has an auto and I told him to drive it as hard as he wanted, I took off the pads today and everything was still looking good, so maybe I saved 4 g, I will never drive it that hard on the streets anyway...Rick

Rick,

Where did you purchase the rotors and pads? What type of rotors are you using?

I would only up grade to a big brake kit if I had a S/C (which I happen to have). Ford/Shelby makes these cars adequate to the horsepower that they came fromt he factory with IMO.

I have to upgrade soon, as it is EXTREMELY hard to slow my car down, due to the way that I drive. in other words I have a lead foot. If I had no S/C, there would be no need to upgrade.

A S/C may be in the works, plus when I tracked my car, I had severe brake fade.

I've decided to go with the Baer Plus package, its a little less money then the extreme but it should get the job done. I thought about the GT500 Brembo package but I really wanted drilled and slotted rotors so it didn't save me any money. I'm also doing the 14" rear baer rotor kit.

Hey there,

If you decide to go with the GT500 Brembo kit, we manufacture cross-drilled/slotted rotors for that kit. You can purchase those from us, or there are a few site sponsors here that can get those for you.

Other options are AP Racing brakes - either 4 ($2183.74) or 6 ($3219.58) piston fronts, and 4 ($3011.58) piston rears. All AP Racing kits are available in either black or red. Again, a few of the sponsors here can provide those for you.

I'm kind of "on the fence" over a brake upgrade right now. I didn't get that much seat time (around 4.5K) before the snow arrived, and LuLu is all tucked in until it leaves. Meanwhile, I had no complaints with the OEM setup and I can drive pretty hard on the sreet.

Nonetheless, I am partial to the SPP BaerClaw kit (front and rear) with the Shelby branded rotors. I've had this kit on several cars and it pleases me very much, meets my needs. Moreover, if I'm going advertise a particular product without compensation, the Shelby calipers work for me. My way of keeping the car honest, and offering a tip of my hat to Mr. Shelby for the SGT and SPP.

I would like to remind y'all that many of the upgrade products available may require a wheel upgrade as well, for caliper clearance. The wheels mentioned in the opening post, are the stock OEM GT 500 wheel, one with some black out on certain areas of the spokes. Adds a "3-D" like effect.

I do not suggest or recommend spacers on a performance car. Okay for show, but not hard driving, or, the track. If I need clearance, I have a set of Marauder wheels here, powdercoated black with a polished rim that mimmick the stock SGT wheel. From 5 feet, you wouldn't notice a thing, and I know for a fact, they fit the BearClaw kit. My add-on cost to a brake upgrade is remounting the tires and a road force balance. Maybe I'll need new tires by that time anyway, (shrug) so, this isn't a big deal to me. However, some of you may be dropping some unexpected coin, and this should be factored into the cost of an upgrade.

Just my .02C, carry on gents.

So are you offering me a GT500 kit with drilled and slotted rotors? I want big drilled and slotted rotors on all 4 corners and braided lines. I think I can do Baer for under 2k as it stands now, having Shelby on my caliper is nice but Brembo always works to :)

Thanks for the info. I'm seriously considering doing something next month, and these look good.

Other than "liking" them, how do they perform. Can you tell a difference over stock, and have you upgraded your brake lines?

Looks are important, but performance is more so...

Thanks.
