Painted Valve Covers

Car shows are bad things. Just when I thought I was nearing completion I saw something new that I "need." Painted or powdercoated valve covers. I talked to one of the owners and he said he painted his but I forgot to ask more questions then that. So, i come here for advice and answers.

I found that FRPP and Americanmuscle both have powdercoated valve covers. They start at $280. Has anybody replaced their valve covers with these? Has anybody had theirs painted or powdercoated? How much? Did you remove and reinstall the valve covers yourself? Did it require new gaskets or anyother pieces? I have basic mechanical skills and access to a good supply of tools and a skilled helper. Is this something I could do and save a little bit of money?

Lastly, I have a black car with silver stripes. I am thinking either black or silver for the valve covers. I think black will disappear but silver will be a pain to keep clean. Opinions other colors, maybe chrome color?

Thank you.

Here's a "have your cake and eat it too" suggestion, ShelbyPilot. Instead of one or the other color, why not have it mirror your car's paint job? Black base with 2 silver stripes going lengthwise with the valve covers? That would be something I've never seen before, so there's your originality, and even if others have done that, how many valve covers have you seen like that? Probably not many. Obviously, the more complex the paint job, the higher the price. Heck, if you were that worried about price, you could have the covers powder coated, then go to your local hobby store and get a small can of "Testors" Silver metalic model spray paint, mask off the stripes with tape, and paint the silver yourself.

hmmmm, good suggestion. I have a plenum cover on order that is black with the striping painted silver already. Might be too much but I am intrigued.

I just got two phone estimates. One was 60-80 and the other was 60-70. I think I am going to do this. Anybody out there that has removed an reinstalled their own valve covers on an S197 GT?

If you have them powdercoated, just be sure the person/company doing it has a jet washer to clean it out. The valve covers are magneseum and to properly be done, needs to be bead blasted. The baffles inside of the valve covers make it difficult to completely clean the beads out. It needs to be thoroughly cleaned out or you'll be circulating those beads thru your motor!

Shelby Pilot, please be sure to take "before" and "after" pictures of your covers, and please share them with us!
