Bullitt trivia

Actually, there were two cars. An automatic with a 390, and a manual 289. The 390 is the one whose wheel breaks in the last scene, and the 289 is the one that spins out avoiding the motorcyclist. The worst part is that isn't the sound of a mustang. McQueen substituted the sound from a race car.

Geez you guys! You'd think you'd know your Bullitt trivia by now! There were two 390 1968 Mustangs, both manual shifts. One was a GT390 and the other was a 2+2 coupe with a 390. That's why both were stripped of their nameplates and such, to make them look identical (although not exact if you look closely). The sound dubbing was used from the now surviving Bullitt which resides on the east coast. There was rumour that a GT40 was used for dubbing in some parts, but a GT40 has a much higher pitched whine than a 390 cu.in. , and just doesn't sound "right" for a street car. Both Bullitts were modified slightly (induction, exhaust, etc.) in an attempt to keep up with the Charger, which they didn't.

And I believe the Charger lost approx. 8 hubcaps on film, but don't quote me on that.
