Hello all, I am in need of some assistance. Here's my story. I had made a deal with my son that I would buy him a new car under the conditions that he achieves certain grades in school. To my surprise this incentive got him on the honor roll at school. The original car he chose was a Steeda GT Mustang. This deal betweem my son and I has lasted for the last two years and it was time for me to pay up. I priced out a Steeda the way he wanted it and it came to about $47K. I had been putting money away for this event and was fine with this. However, I started looking through ads for Mustangs and noticed that 2007 GT 500s were being sold in the low 50s. I started to wonder why am I ordering a Steeda with 330HP, when for a little bit more I can get a GT500. Therefore, I started calling dealerships in my area (Kansas City) and got the usual 20K over, 15K over, etc. for a new one. I then started calling dealerships out of state and got 1 that would allow me to custom order a 2008 for 8K over. I thought about it and decided to do it. I gave the dealership in Virginia my credit card and they took a 3K deposit. They faxed me a sheet that confirmed my order for 9K over!? I called the dealership and they told me that was the lowest the manager would go. I said that wasn't the deal that we made on the phone and he said that was the price. I then came up with the idea to use this dealer's price to get a similar price with a dealer here in my area. I called every Ford dealer in Kansas City, some said that 20K or 12K or whatever was their bottom number. I found 1 dealer that said they would do a custom order for 8K over to beat the dealer from out of state. I went to the dealership signed the papers and gave a 5K deposit. This dealer states they are the number 3 selling dealer in the country for GT500s, (maybe so, maybe not). At any rate they had 8 GT500s at their dealership, some were 2007s and some were 2008s, 3 of which had "SOLD" stickers on them with the buyer's name. They had told me that they are buying other dealer's cars and having them brought in for existing customers and retail stock. At any rate here is my question, they printed me out an official looking order form as confirmation of my order. The order number in the upper left hand corner says "1234". I went back to the dealer today and asked if this was the actual order number and he said yes. He went on to say that he doesn't have a VIN number yet, but will let me know when he does. My concern is simple, I am planning on giving this car to my son as a Christmas present and I am obviously concerned about not having the car. Does anyone know if ordering one now can legitimately get me the car in the next 4 months. I have no idea how the ordering time frames are working out on these cars. My son has worked his rear end off in school and I've got to be able to deliver this car as my end of the deal to him. On this particular order sheet the Priority is listed as 15. Any comments would be appreciated. The car's order specs are listed below.

Wow, nice Dad. Welcome Dennis.

Once your car is bucked on the line, it will take 3-4 weeks for it to show up at your dealership. Your dealer should be able to ask his zone rep when his alotment will be pulled.

How old is your son. I hope not a teenager! :headspin:

Would you consider adopting a 32 year old? I made excellent grades in college, and have two masters degrees, so you wouldn't have to worry about paying tuition in the future.

Thanks for the info Grabber. My son is 16, however, he is a very good kid. He has always seemed to do the right things. I have had a lengthy discussion with him about this car and what is to be expected of him, hopefully, I won't regret it. I am a muscle car fanatic and he has grown up around that his whole life. Of my cars, his favorite has always been my 1970 Mach 1 Mustang (Calypso Coral, 428 Super Cobra Jet, 4 speed). I know he has always wanted a new Mustang and I am just ecstatic to be able to give it to him. I think I'm probably more excited about it than he is. Oh well!

GGL, thankfully, I only have 1 kid and my wife wants it to stay that way, but thanks for the adoption offer!

Oh boy... you started something now Dennis.

16 years old and 500 Super Charged horsepower.

Not a good combination in my book.

Have you seen what typical teenagers do to fast cars?? Good kid or not, this car has the ability to really get an inexperienced (and even experienced ones) driver in big trouble!

To answer your original question - search around the forum here. There's LOTS of good info that's already been posted about how the order/production/delivery process. Basically, unless your dealer has an allocation, from his Ford Zone Rep, his car won't be built. You can order it today, and your Shelby might be the very last one built in June 2008. Depends on when your dealers allocation comes up to have one built.

No guarantees you'll get it before Christmas.

BTW - what order # are you in line with this dealer? Their first car, their 5th car, their 8th car? THAT'S a big question to ask them.

Good luck.

Dennis,

This car is hard for a mature adult to keep there foot out of let alone a 16 year old child. Yes I said child. At 16 you are not even an adult. I have 3 kids....13, 23, and 26 so I have been around the kid block a tad. There are other ways to reward a 16 year old boy, and IMO this is a accident waiting to happen.

I know you did not ask for my opinion on that, but I had to say it. :)

Wow!! Dennis I presume? Really nice of you to research and buy his stang like that, especially a GT500.

Just to warn you, take him to a OPEN parking lot and have him practice there away from poles, cars whatever before finding out how fast this car gets out of control when romping on the throttle. A few experanced guys here can tell you this and some of which drag race cars. After I bought mine my dad at 63 drove mine, he owned a 1970 429SCJ Torino and he was really impressed with the power compared to that. Anyway welcome to the forum!! :)

Dennis, I'm not sure whether anyone answered your question. The truth is that you cannot be sure to get the car by Christmas. The regional rep will usually find out about a month ahead of time which QUARTER your car may be scheduled in. Then, you'll have to wait for a VIN to learn more. I'd say if you don't have a VIN by early October, you may not get it by Christmas.

You can always give him an 8 x 10" glossy for now. Just tell us which color you got, and a member who has that color can post a photo. You can print that photo and give it to him.

That looks like the car I have on order.

My experiance is there are no guarantees on this car and I have been fortunate to test

drive three of these ROCKET SHIPS at local dealers and my feeling is this car demands

respect from experianced drivers as I have read about several new GT 500'S that

have lost control and bit the dust here in So. Cal.

didn't read all the threads to this post. Your gesture is noble and I don't profess to know your son but if he is a teenager .. I wouldn't have in trusted my son with car with that type of HP .... HP has to be appreciated and honored.

It can get you out of trouble with the experienced driver and as quickly get you into trouble for the inexperienced.

Just keep this in mind ... but cudos to your son's grades ... thats fantastic

Dave and Joe, I appreciate your responses to my original question. This is a little off of my original question, but I didn't know the responses would go in this direction, so I thought I should clear the air on the exact circumstances of this car for my son. He has been tested during school for many years to have average or above average intelligence, but he always seemed to be getting Cs and lower grades in school. His tutor gave me the idea of using a car as a motivational tool for grades. Since adopting this scenario, he has gotten the best grades of his life. He has Mustang posters all over the walls in his room and he has told me this has been a great motivational tool for him. I don't really care what motivates him, I just want to see him do well in school. Some kids just naturally do well on their own and other kids need some kind of a push, I understand that. Secondly, he turned 16 about 8 months ago. With me being a collector of muscle cars, I only drive them on nice sunny days. I knew that if he was able to get the Mustang, I would only allow him to do the same. Therefore, he needed a car for all other types of weather, including the winter. So for his 16th birthday, I bought him a new Hummer H2, I felt this vehicle would be very safe for a new driver as it is built like a tank. This vehicle will be his primary driving vehicle with driving the Mustang to be done on nice sunny days and not at all during the winter. With me being new to the forum, I don't want people to think that I am some rich snob spoiling his kid, that's not the case. I am a car enthusiast!! And I want to pass my passion along to my son. I am simply a hard working small business owner who has been extremely blessed and fortunate to be successful. By the time my son gets the Mustang he will have been driving for almost 2 years and up to this point, no tickets and no accidents. I know this could change with the Shelby GT 500, but I am hopeful that I have taken all of the right steps to avoid that.

Shelbydude, I appreciate the info on the other cars, but having given the dealership a $5K deposit, I think I am locked into a deal with them. It's just a matter of trying to figure out if they're telling me the truth about when I will be getting the car.

Once again, if anyone has any idea if an order number of "1234' sounds legitimate, I would appreciate any comments.

I appreciate the deal you made with your son and wanting to buy him a nice car, but I have to say at 16 he may get into alot of trouble with this car. Save your self some money and buy him a nice GT. If he can handle that he can always upgrade it or trade it for a Shelby later.

Why do people do this...put their opinions out about something that wasn't asked. :banghead:

He already put a deposit on the car, he did not ask for our opinions on whether this car was the proper one for his son, and he's moving forward.

As for whether 1234 is a valid order number...I can't answer that. I'd pm Shelby Dude or don d....they work at dealerships....or Five Oh B also works at a dealer.

Good luck

Dave,

I think it is because this is the first time we have ever heard of someone buying a 16 year old kid a GT500 and it blew some of us away and we could not hold back our comments.

I am guilty. I will now spank myself--------> :finger:

Dennis, I know that you have taken a bit of flack from the gang but normally they are right. However we decided to help our 16 olmost 17 year old boy but a 95 5 liter 5 speed and he did awsome with it. a year later he traded it infor a 2000 gt with with numerous Steeda upgrades to make way over 320hp and still no problem and he is now almost 20.

It does take a certain kind of boy to know when and how to handle the car. He has since added a 95 Toyota 4runner for winter driving and he works 2 jobs and pays for everything except the first 4 grand we gave him for his fist car which grew to a 12k Mustang.

I hope you read your son right and that he places his ego in the right priority.

Good luck.

As for your question, I ordered June 1 and I still don't have a Dora let alone a vin#, prepare a back up 8x10, waiting is not so bad when you have a H2 for the winter!!!

Sounds like you have a very responsible young man. Do you think part of that had to do with the fact that he had to pay for a good portion of his cars? If you have a vested interest in something you usually take care of it better.

I'm sure Dennis' son is great too, but it's proven that kids will take better care of something that they had to pay for, verses being given (like a H2 Hummer and a limited edition 500hp Shelby Mustang). That's over $100,000 worth of new cars! My kids better get straight A's at Harvard for that kind of reward.

Again, nothing against Dennis. I'm sure he worked hard and has a great son. But over $100,000 for 2 new cars? Wow!

Dennis70Mach,

There is no way to know when your order will get pulled unless the regional rep is willing to share that info with your dealer. It may not happen until next June. It may happen next month. From the time you get a full VIN till delivery is usually about 7/8 weeks. I would definitely try to work out a deal where your dealer can trade an unsold unit for one that ShelbyDude has mentioned...or something along those lines.

Next I would strongly suggest that your first father-son outing be to a NASA or SCCA sanctioned driving school. I have been around HiPo vintage mustangs all my life, and nothing prepared me for this cars' torque. One squeeze on the skinny pedal with the steering wheel slightly turned and the back end is going first....! If he respects the danger, it will be a great car that he will remember (& maybe keep) the rest of his life!

<edit>: My father gave me a 66 vert for my first car. I kept it for 30 years. Only sold it to buy my GT500.

Good Luck

Hey Denniss that's cool. I stuck my kid in the old expedition because my wife wanted to make sure he did not get hurt :hysterical2::hysterical: He had been driving race cars since he was 12 and started off racing motorcycles in the 4 to 6 division (at the age of 4) at Orlando Speedworld. Anyway he was either real lucky or unnoticable as he did not get any tickets. I was shocked. Anyway for his graduation present from high school I bought him a GTO and with the mods is around 540 hp. I had the talk with him about testosterone (hope I came close to spelling that right :-) and peer pressure. I don't think he drove any faster, however the cops did not like seeing a young guy in something so nice. He actually got a ticket for crossing a center line within 100 feet of a traffic signal :banghead: That one pissed me off and got an attorney. Anyway just tell him that he is going to have to drive 40 when it is 45 speed limit. Mikee did not belive me however he is at college in the old expedition and mom is driven the hot rod. It was his decision as the cops just wanted to pull him over for anything. I'm sure he was no saint but it has been since Christmas when he traded mom and (knock on wood) hasn't had a ticket since. Just explain to him that he is going to have to drive like a saint. Another idea would be to get some heavy window tinting and don't drive around with the window down and no I'm not kidding. Good luck I'm sure it will be a really cool Christmas around your house. I would love to be a fly on the wall when he gets that. Of course you do know you will not see him for Christmas dinner :happy feet: :happy feet: :happy feet: :happy feet:

I like most of the guys here can only guess at when you car will be pulled or if it will make it for xmas. However, a glossy and a promise I sure will do the trick, if a promise and grade did the trick to earn the car.

I will also say, that although I do not think a 16-17 year old should have a 500HP car (not that you asked) but I am sure many of the guys here forget that when they were teens, tinkering with muscle cars and HP, we did so in rattle traps compared to todays well built cars. It is not the HP you need to worry about, it is your son and if you can trust him, and obviously you already made that determination.

Best of luck on getting the car on time, and all the luck that you son enjoys this beast safely!
